Just out of morbid curiosity, what's the rules for doing that in the United States? If I "modify" a car's body extensively can I still be permitted to drive it on the road legally?

What about the hot rods built by Boyd Hotrod and such? Are they even legal to drive on the roads considering that they are 100% custom fabricated?

It would be quite awesome to design a car and build it and then drive it around. Somehow, however, I think D.O.T would stand 100% in your way of doing it.

edit: let me clarify; how would the police be able to spot an entirely hand-fabricated chassis and bodied car from the PT Cruiser of a Neon kind of thing (other than it's not a factory produced car...)??

I think that if you do extensive enough modifications to a car you can get it registered as a kit car. Kit cars can be street legal, and they get away with all kinds of stuff that production cars could NEVER get away with.
