View Full Version : PlanetSide has arrived!
ELX13 05-21-2003, 02:40 PM PlanetSide (http://www.planetside.com), the game i'm working on, hit store shelves yesterday and i'm just curious who here has heard about/played/is looking forward to it...
anybody?
p.s. - "working on" = present tense because this is a persistent online game so it'll be updated with new content and such monthly.
wakeech 05-21-2003, 02:54 PM i'm a Mac user... will there be an OSX port?? does this yet exist?? is it even on the map to stray from consoles at all???
yeah, this game looks super cool, in concept.
Congratulations. I know *exactly* what it takes to ship one of those, having delivered one last fall....
SGC
threeputtwash 05-21-2003, 03:51 PM Got it yesterday. While you're "working on it", can you make the mouse inversion work per tab?
I have a funky system where I want the mouse to not be inverted for soldier mode, and inverted when I'm flying an aircraft.
And people here at work are pissed that you nerfed the experience per kill. (we're game developers too)

that's extremely reasonable, IMO.
lefuton 05-22-2003, 12:58 PM how much is it monthly? (usd)
wakeech 05-22-2003, 01:24 PM i checked on the site, and it was li $12 or $12.50, but you can get the rate down to $10/month ($120/year)... but that's an awfully long time to play anything (even the classics... i always find myself putting them away to rediscover them months later)
lefuton 05-22-2003, 01:28 PM hrm there are only 2 online games i played for any significant amount of time. shattered galaxy being the most, then about 2.5 years of everquest. i tried daoc and never made it past the first free month and earth and beyond i lasted like 3 months. i was in the beta for eve and i by the second time i logged i was done =P
how much content is there in planetside? or is it the same 10 battlefields day in day out?
ELX13 05-22-2003, 05:04 PM ok, i'll take these in order:
wakeech: sorry, no mac plans for planetside as of yet.
sgc: thanks! where do u work? what did u ship? (send me a PM if you'd rather keep it quiet ;))
threeputtwash: glad u picked it up! i'll check with the designers and programmers on the mouse customization per tab thing...doubtful but i'll look into it. i think dave's explanation on why the XP system changed is reasonable. i haven't played the game since the change so i may be sharing your opinion soon. but...we do have BR 10 players already after 2 days of play! where do u work if u don't mind me asking? (see the "PM workaround" from above ;))
wakeech (2): the monthly fee is $12.99. you're correct about "the more u buy, the more u save" pricing per game. and we just launched the SOE all access pass for $21.99/mo. which allows players to play all SOE published premium games.
lefuton: there's a TON of content in the game now with plenty more to come in the coming months (the website outlines everything in great detail). yes, it's the same 10 continents all the time...they average about 6-7 KM squared by the way. plenty of real estate to fight on and for IMHO.
edit: threeputtwash, i just jumped in the game to test the mosue stuff. from what i can tell it defaults to your preference: "regular" for soldier look and "inverted" for flying. i did notice that u can't save the mouse settings per tab panel though. i'll bring it up and see what they say.

Duron 800 Mhz/ 256MB X3 SDRAM/ Radeon 8500 128MB
here are the min specs:
Windows 98/2000/ME/XP; Pentium III 1.0 GHz or greater; 256 MB RAM; Direct3D compliant video card with 64MB RAM; DirectX 8.1 or higher compatible sound card; 56k Internet connection; 4X speed CD-ROM; 3 GB hard drive space; DirectX 8.1 or greater
i think your duron should do just fine. you'll probably have to turn some of the eye candy down for decent framerate though. :(

I picked it up on friday. It ROCKS! I'm an avid MMO fan. Played UO, EQ, DAOC and I am eagerly awaiting SOE's other project (It's looking great too and getting better every day)
Planetside is much better than I expected. It was exactly what I've been looking for. An action game with MMO characterisitics. I've only made it to BR4 (I keep restarting my character to play with the different certs) but so far it's been mucho fun.
The vehicle pads get buggy when a lot of users are trying to use it, but other than that, it's been great!
Look for Kuf and Roto on NC Emerald East! GREAT JOB!

thanks for the support! i'm glad you're enjoying yourself.
it's a good thing u can have 4 characters huh? ;) makes the "cert experimentation" a bit easier.
the vehicale pads (among other things) are something i know the designers are looking at. it can get a bit frustrating around those things when everybody's trying to use them. that's what u gotta love about an MMO...if it's broke, we can fix it!
i'm all about the vanu bruh...so i'll be killin ya soon!
Hercules 05-27-2003, 12:10 PM You'll be happy to know...
I just ordered the game ... I should have it in two days.
lefuton 05-28-2003, 11:21 AM just hit br8 last night im in markov terran republic =)
ELX13 05-28-2003, 11:32 AM herc: that's great dawg! thatnks for the support...i hope u enjoy yourself.
lefuton: congrats! i have had zero time to play the game. i'll be a straight up n00b when i finally do jump in!
lefuton 05-28-2003, 11:34 AM it's my 2nd night playing. i got to br6 the first night but the 5 or so hours last night only got me 2 more... i think im feeling an xp curve =p i heard the max is 20 or so?
btw is it at all possible for me to make a char in a different faction on the same server? found out a friend of mine is in VS faction on the same server, would like to play with him occasionally.

lefuton, No all my secondary characters had to be on the same faction. If you're not too far up in battle ranks, just restart.
