That was Geoff Bodine (about 2-3 years ago at Daytona...old news), and yes, he survived it. He wasn't able to race for several months, but he survived.

Indy 500 '73.. Was there when Art Polard crashed and Swede Savage. Man what a horror story of racing. The photos in the paper the next day of the remains of Swede's car sailing through the air, his clearly badly shredded legs sticking out of the front of the car, were just terrible.
I can't find the photos today.. They would be poor images anyway. People used to get really messed up in older race cars.
