View Full Version : ETA august for California
alarabie 05-19-2003, 02:34 PM Just got a call from my dealer who said that because of the production line delays, cars will not be here until early August. I'm in the first order group.
Have you heard the same from your dealers?
miata2rx8 05-19-2003, 02:58 PM Let's hope he's wrong...
RotorMotor 05-19-2003, 03:03 PM 90% of the dealers are far less informed about the car and it's arrival date than most of the people on this form. This is the first one that had a later arrival date than what's commonly thought to be the timeframe here, at least that I've seen. I'm still hoping for mid-July. Until we hear something official from Mazda USA, I'm not putting any stake in dealer ETAs....
Gamera 05-19-2003, 03:53 PM I was at my dealer yesterday and he was showing me the online Mazda database for all allocated and pre-ordered cars, it looked to me a like secure website (any Mazda reps here? Please correct me if I'm mistaken). Things such as order #, vehicle specs, build start date, VIN, in-port dates, current status are all available. My rep mentioned the estimated delivery may slip sometimes, but the in-port dates are accurate, we took an look at Mazda6 which showed it arrived the 16th in Long Beach harbor.
The earliest RX-8 he had on the screen showed it was already building (start date of May 1, fwiw), and a delivery date of June. This was a 6 spd, Ti, with black cloth and nav. My car unfortunately got pushed back from 2nd to 3rd allocation, since all 1st allocation numbers were cut. Originally he was expecting 5 cars each allocation, now its only 2 for the 1st, 4 or 5 for the 2nd, hopefully 5 for the third, etc., ramping upwards after that (I'm #8 on the list). According to the database, 1st allocation delivery to Los Angeles (in dealer status) is June 15, 2nd allocation is not yet in production, but should commence very soon. That said, he is estimating middle of August for me, not bad I guess considering I got bumped back a notch.

So you're estimating August for 3rd allocation and June 15th for first; would early to mid July be a good estimate for 2nd allocations? I ask this because I'm in the 2nd allocation and my dealer is totally clueless. I would really like one straight answer on when my particuliar car will be here.

Unfortunately your one straight answer doesn't exist because that information has not yet been released by Mazda Corp. Believe me, we're all as desperate to know as you are....

Just reporting what the database showed. IMO, we are still at the early stages of a brand new manufacturing line, so there are probably many unpredictable factors that could affect production schedules. It's not like Mazda is withholding information from us, it's just that all anyone can do is make a best guess based on what information is available to them, at that particular moment. Being an early adopter on many things (not really a good habit), I'd prefer they take their time and get it right.
Also keep in mind actual deliver date is going to be based on your location also (for Virginia, the port is probably Baltimore).

Haven't heard anything here, but "crap!" if that's true... (-_-)

Baltimore is not the port du jour. It will be Newark NJ because that's where they have the facilities to add emissions and port options.:( Ship time from Japan to Newark is 30 days; about double the time to the west coast.

I seriously doubt that they'd ship cars bound for the west coast to NJ only to be shipped cross country again. West coast cars are probably LA-bound....

he means that it takes twice as long for the ship to get to the east coast than the west coast.
but that trip to newark is probably a bit shorter now, thanks to the aussies making the Panama Canal a little wider (http://satirewire.com/news/jan02/australia.shtml)
thanks to toadman for the link;)

OOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH..... :p
TreknMazda 05-19-2003, 06:17 PM NO, what I meant was it takes twice the time to get cars to the east coast. West coast shipping schedule is about 15 days. Sorry for any
mazdabob 05-19-2003, 06:59 PM I have a printout from the dealer that says my estimated build date is"JUN WK/1". I was told that delivery has been consistent at 12 weeks from build date. Also, I believe the port for northern California is Benicia.

This sounds like my car. I ordered a 6MT, Ti, black cloth, w/nav. :D
MrWigggles 05-20-2003, 01:08 AM These are some fast shipping boats.
I thought it took 3 weeks min. to get a boat from Japan to USA. I am glad to hear that it is only 15 days.
Damn if the car is being built now and it is going to be in the dealers hands by June 15th than that is some fast turn-around at the port. Someone's feeding crack to the longshoremen these days.
Anyway, I am officially in the first allocation. If I can have it by July 19th I will be a happy man. That's my 10 year high school reunion. :)

dont get ur hopes up;) . june 15th is the supposed time it reaches LA(southern ca) dealers. and that date is shaky at best. now as with all new releases, cali gets them first, then it starts moving eastward. i would say it would take about 2 weeks to reach houston. i really hope that date, june 15th, is accurate. but i was at my dealer today asking for my VIN #, the guy said, latest word was that its delayed about a month. i didnt get my VIN, only 2 cars at the dealer have the VINS.
heres a little bit of advice i have learned thru life. hope for the best and expect the worst. if u get ur hopes up then ur only setting urself up for dissappointment.

Life is just a game of: Want-Settle-Get
We WANT our RX-8's in June
We will SETTLE for July
But we will GET August (God I hope not)
P.S. when I called to see if they had my vin yet on Friday, it was a negitive.
Toadman 05-20-2003, 07:10 AM The cars ship via rail to the following ports after West Coast arrival.

Port Hueneme, CA.
Port Midlothian, TX
Port Kansas

I'm hoping for the week before that, since that's MY 10 year reunion.
rx8daniel 05-20-2003, 11:34 AM ages revealed... I definitely will have mine by Sept, for my twentieth reunion....
Renesis08 05-20-2003, 12:12 PM I guess that means I WILL DEFINITELY have mine by my 10yr. reunion which is still 5yrs. away :D .

Elara 05-20-2003, 03:36 PM Thanks, I think. I still get carded for everything. It's flattering, but annoying.

It would be great to get pictures of the train loads of RX8s and pictures of RX8s all parked there before loading on trucks. I am close to the Midlothian spot.
wanker 05-21-2003, 03:18 PM I got a call from my dealer, Marina Motors
in Capitola CA, last night.
He said that there was a two-month
production delay for all cars and that my
first-allocation Titanium MT will be here
no earlier than August.
I asked him to check if he had my VIN
number and he hasn't got back yet.
I don't mind waiting (much) if there really
has been a delay, but I am hoping we can
collectively keep the dealers from making
side deals with the pre-order cars.
Knowledge is power.

Wow 2 month delay. Seems like dealers are just giving out numbers. Some say 1 month, couple weeks...what is the for sure answer? We may never know  .

no way its august
MrWigggles 05-21-2003, 04:41 PM It is just another reason to never take anything your dealer says too seriously.
In the last 60 seconds, I talked to Jeff Haas Mazda here in Houston, the good news is that they have two vin numbers:
....0784 and
....1119
The bad news is neither one is mine and I am now in the second alotment; they tried to change a car in the first alotment to fit my request but weren't able to. My sales person Keith still has the production delay at 1 month so the first allotment should be mid-July while the second allotment should be mid-August.
That's my news so take it for what its worth.

Is that dealer down in Santa Cruz? 3 months ago I went down there and ask them if I should pre-order one for delivery at the end of November. They said that was way to early and told me to come back at mid June. From what you hear from them, do you think that they can have a car for me at that time if I order now?

Amen!
rx8daniel 05-21-2003, 09:34 PM Most dealers should have plenty of stock that you may not even need to order one for then. But... I don't think they can take orders for any after the preorders yet. I may be wrong. I'm not sure if the website will continue to be a starting point but it can't hurt to build your dream RX-8 on the Mazda website and shoot the order to a dealer you know and trust - or several that you don't and see who gets back to you and sounds like they could know what they are talking about. Another 3 weeks won't hurt to wait much.

It is the same dealer but I have only dealt with him over email or on the phone.
Judging by the timing of his phone call, I wonder if they _did_ get the VIN number
but were thinking of selling the car to a higher bidder and give me this two-month
delay story.
I wish Mazda had sent us the VIN's instead.
To change the subject, has anyone driven the Mitsubishi Evolution yet?
That may be my alternative. Ugly, no image factor, but a good driver's car.
Also a four door, four seater.

I got their Internet Sale Manager wrote this "will not sell above MSRP" on his business card just for assurance. Hope it works.
RotorBoy 05-22-2003, 04:16 PM So based on Toadman's post, I assume that all 8's will be shipped via oceanliner to California and the shipped via rail to various ports. I was under the impression that East Coast 8's would arrive via oceanliner to the Jacksonville, FL port if not others up the East Coast.
