I do see that other rotaries have done deals gap before. I had no intension of this being bothersom to some of you. We decided to call it a 1st annual because it the name we used was the first time and also we are trying to get everyone involved.
Once again, If some of you are bothered by us calling it the first annual Mazda Rotaries at Deals Gap, I would sincerely appologize. Hope you guys will still attend, As its a FREE event and place where we could all meet and not just thru the computer screen.

I don't think anyone felt that the event posting was bothersome, and apologies are certainly not needed. We were just pointing out that this forum has been plastered with threads on both this year's event in September, and the September 2005 event already well involved.
The other point was that this year's event was open to ALL rotaries (and so named), and not a single RX-7 participated, or even showed any interest. I, for one, appreciate misterwilson007 bringing the event information to this forum, and I'll probably be there, given that I'm a "local".

FYI, you can't have a 1st annual anything. In order for it to be ANNUAL it has to have happened once before. Hence the meaning it happens every year. As a result the word that is used for the first time an event is held is INAUGURAL. You can have a 2nd Annual but not a 1st. Just some FYI.

On another note why in the world have two events, though I am not opposed to going more than once a year. It would seem to make sense that in order to get an event bigger and get more sponsorship the rotary followers should join forces. If all you are shooting for is a get together for some fun I understand but it seems that by your discussion of banquet rooms and lodging that there is going to be a cost and seems to be more than just a "get together". I say lets join forces and make all the other groups pale in comparison to our rotary numbers. That's just my two cents. ;)

No big deal with me. I was agreeing with the "why dont we do a tag team effort on this thing proposal!". I like the idea of going to the dragon (would have went last year, but the wife wasn't feeling it.. we have since fixed that though :D ). Your absoutly correct, we are all rotorheads. What do you say Raz, how about calling up the 7 boys and lets make some common ground! If not, thats ok too :cool: .

We posted both this year's event as well as next year's event on the RX-7 forum as well as here. Where's the interest from all the non-RX-8ers? Haven't seen any so far, but the event is still open to all.

Leep's idea has merit, but our September 2005 event is already fixed by contractural obligations for lodging, food, sponsors, etc. and has been in active planning for over 3 months now. So, the only question I have is not "why", but "how"?

It's true that we're all rotorheads, but it seems as if the RX-7 folks feel like we're poaching on their sacred ground to come up with an event on our own. Sure, many of the RX-7 clubs have invited RX-8ers to their events, and they have been welcomed. But it's a 2-way street in my book, and to just pop up with something which competes with our efforts; after 3 months of time, money, advertising, and hard work, just didn't sit well with me. Maybe it's just a timing thing, but it's not like somebody couldn't have scanned our forum first to check and see. I'm all for embracing the entire rotary community, and we have, and are still attempting to do so. It's almost like many of the RX-7 folks don't think we belong, and that they are just waiting on a new RX-7 to come along; and that's OK too. Like I said before, I'll probably attend both.

I see no competition from the 7 club with the 8 club. I joined here not long before the prospect of an outing with the 7's. They voted on a date and a place and wolla! However, I guess you guys might get offended and maybe I could see that. Surely we are bigger than that. As for the 1st annual, well, anyone can name anything whatever they wish. There have been other 1st annual events in all types of sports so I realy see no difference. As for the 7's not coming to the 8 get togethers, I can only speak for myself. I was not aware of the events. In the future I for one would enjoy attending the 8 events if I am allowed to so. After all I am a first gen owner and there are so very few of us left. So I try to go to the events that are close enough and are all rotary.

Fontanna Village will give us the Low season rate + 15% off on the cabins.... and 25% off on the Hotels.

Rotary Extreme decided to sponsor our event...
RotoSport is deciding either cash sponsorship or door prizes...
Hinson Super car is coming out with their LS1 3rd gen monster and also help out with sponsorship.
RX7store told me before Xmas that they were also interested in sponsoring this event
RX7trix were also interested in sponsoring.
I'm good with Trussville Mazda here in town and they will most likely part sponsor this event.
So far over 60 RX7 owners are interested in coming to this event.

Still a FREE event, cheap lodging, possible free food, cheap t-shirt ($10)... I don't know why this would cause problems???

Well, seems like the list is growing.
I've heard today that Spec Clutch might be interested in sponsoring this event.

We currently have 3-4 RX8s, 3-4 V8 RX7s, couple of 20b RX7 and rest 1st thru 3rd gen RX7s.. Oh, My engine builder might bring his RX3 and his friends have REPUs.

Hope we could get few more RX8 to come out to this event. Please let people know as this will lead to some awesome caravans and drives. Also, several experts will be coming out to answer your questions and such.

Has there been any interest from other 8 drivers. I see it is misterwilson and me for now, just wnated to know if there were any others. Maybe it will just be the two of us.

I am planning on doing the RX-8 event in September too.

I'm doing the dragon in september as well.......onofiveo should be making the trip in april, but he is the only other 8 owner that i know of.......we need to spread the word and get some more representation from the 8 community.......

ONOFIVEO will represent! The spouse has decided not to go, so I'm working on a roommate, but I'll be there. I hope to make Sept as well. RotaryTaz and the Miata club (CAMS) will probably go in July. I'm not sure, but there's a possiblity for that as well.

so...how'd it go this weekend?

It was awesome in my opinion.. but very few rx8s showed up.. All were from Birmingham alabama area. NO ONE else with RX8 showed.. I guess older RX owners aren't good enough for RX8 owners?? Just kidding. Hope some of you with RX8 will come join us next year.

yeah, i wanted to go, but just couldn't make it this year. hopefully i'll be able to make it next year. i went a few years back with a scoobie club, and had a blast. i'd really like to make it back there again soon.

Alright guys, for those of you who haven't taken on the Gap, let me tell you that it is the most awesome public road that I have ever driven. In fact those 11 miles will probably put some private road courses to shame. Those who attended last fall's event know what I mean. (Easy left, hard right, hard left, brake, left again, hard right...)

It was truly a thrill a second. 318 turns in 11 miles will wear you out and make your passengers seasick . I pushed my 8 more than I ever have. It's not just curvy, there are full turns all the way through the dragon. My new Michelins held up to the challenge though. They were snapping on the heels of every RX7 that got in the way. All the hype of the superhandling 7s didn't faze my 8. In fact a couple of runs through had me begging the 7 drivers ahead of me to get off of their brakes and drive.

The Mazda Rotary Car Club of Alabama did a great job of organizing the event, especially given that this was their first time doing this. The accomadations at Fontana Village weren't 1st class, but were pretty good. This is the begining of the season for them, so there were a couple of minor glitches but nothing to run me away. And just so you know, cell phone service is nonexistent and none is to be found for many, many miles. Drinkers, be aware that the area is in a dry county, so plan accordingly.

Herblenny has already posted links to some photos. As you can see there were plenty of RX7s, even three or four V8 powered monsters! It was amazing to see the varied group of 7s. They included about every model and color, but mostly red, black and white and few if any of them stock. The engine bay of every FD was different. There were so many custom mods.

The local sheriff's office and state trooper spoke to the group and basically reminded us that 1) this is a public road and not a track, 2) don't wreck, 3) if you do wreck, help will be a long time coming to you, 4) watchout for the motorcycles, and lastly respect the Dragon. The scenery was spectacular. The area is mountainous and full of greenery. The roads are well kept and clean and the waters are beautiful.

I was a little disappointed to see only two 8s in attendance, but I know many are planning for the fall run. I got a couple of PMs from some of you who had planned to come but life got in the way. I understand. Nevertheless, it was a gr8 trip. I met a lot of great people and I'm looking forward to a return trip. September sounds like a good time what do you guys think?

I'm glad to hear that you had a great time. I felt bad that only 2 8's showed up and thought maybe you might of felt out of place. Sunday morning, others told me that you took off early, made me worry a bit.

Depend on what you guys think about 7s and 8s getting together in the fall, we might come up and show our support for the BOTD. I've already talked with hand full of 7 owners and they are interested. As soon as I get the word from BOTD, I'll try to organize an informal 7 fall gathering and we all meet somewhere at the Deals for one day. Maybe bottom of Fontana Dam??
