View Full Version : I crashed the batmobile today
i3man 12-03-2004, 12:43 AM Actually someone crashed me.
I was driving on the freeway about 65mph (that's pretty fast here in Hawaii, speed limit is 55mph) going through a gentle sweeper left when a LS400 came flying by me at 80+mph and side-swiped the left side of the batmobile in the middle of the sweeper.
I heard the loud thud and by the time I realized what happened the speeding LS400 was 200 yards in front of me. So I start to chase the guy and call the cops at the same time on my cell. I finally catch the guy and I'm telling the police dispatcher what is going on. He realized I'm behind him so he pulls off the freeway and pulls over on the shoulder.
He gets out of the car and walks towards my car and the first thing he says is "did you call the cops?" I said yes I did. He then says lets go forward a bit and we can exchange information there. He jogs back to his car, hops in, and speeds off again. We're in traffic and he's trying to make a get away. I flying through the gears trying to keep up and he makes a right turn and I finally come to my senses and the rational side of me that makes me the person I am, and not someone like him, says to myself "hey idiot WTF are you doing", so I give up the chase and pull over before I hurt someone, then call the cops again because I'm no longer where I told the cops we were pulling over.
The cops come and the LS400 is either stolen or the kid just bought it and didn't register it...probably no insurance.
I look at my car and I have damage down the entire left side and my driver's side mirror is ripped off. I feel like a lucky guy tonight. Anytime you get into an accident at that speed it can be fatal. I'm thankful that I'm not hurt, might have a few aches and pains in the morning, but there are too many good things in my life right now to be upset about this.
I was gonna sell the batmobile within the next months but now I'm wondering how much this will affect resale.
Drive safely everyone.
RX Renesis 12-03-2004, 01:20 AM ouch man... thats gonna hurt to u and ur car.... ouch... and stupid kids...
Speed-ER doc 12-03-2004, 01:23 AM Sorry i3man. Hope they catch the punk. Good luck with the repairs.
i3man 12-03-2004, 01:56 AM Fortunately there is no mechanical damage, just a lot of body work. I carry $1000 deductibles because if I ever get into an accident and it is my fault, I feel I should pay. If it is the other person's fault, his insurance will pay. Never did I imagine getting hit by an uninsured motorist or a stolen vehicle.
That LS400 is a boat and going that fast it's easy to see that cars tendancy to want to drift out of the turn.
There was actually a witness that stopped the first time we stopped and said he was going to wait with me until the police came to give his account. When the kid took off I took off after him and I don't know what happened to the witness. When I slowed down to wait for the cops he didn't show up. I hope the witness did a good deed and called police to report what he saw. I'd like to send him something to show my appreciation if I can find out who it was.
Cops said it makes no difference. Since it was a hit and run the guy is essentially admitting fault. But if he doesn't have insurance then I'm out $1000, but I'll try and get my office to pay for it since the only reason I was out there was for work and I don't have an auto allowance.
Genesis 12-03-2004, 07:43 AM Sorry to hear about yer troubles, but I like your reference to the "batmobile"...friends say the same thing of my 8 :) Duh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh, batman!
ricecookie 12-03-2004, 07:53 AM Ouch, sorry to hear that, can you really say that YOU crashed the bat mobile? Or was it the a-hole in the LS400 that crashed your batmobile. :(
i3 man, you're correct and I don't think you should be liable for any amount. Even if that asshole gets away or doesn't have insurance, your work should reimburse you because you were basically on the job. But even if you do get reimbursed your deductible from work, I'd check how it would affect your insurance.
That "chase" sounded exciting while it lasted. Glad you did the right thing and let the pros handle it. Good luck!
truemagellen 12-03-2004, 08:30 AM what color car may I ask? (gulp)
judging by him calling it the batmobile..i'd say we're safe true and his is black,...not silver...

Oops, sorry bout that. Though I'm not sure there is really a curse. I have seen all of the colors post accident pictures in the last couple of weeks. Except for Nordic Green. Are they invincible or something?

I'm assuming it's a numbers game. There aren't as many Greens or Yellows around.
rotten42 12-03-2004, 02:49 PM The silvers are cursed.....way more of them getting banged up than all the others.

PoLaK 12-03-2004, 04:04 PM Stuipid punk kids that dont know how to drive.......
93rdcurrent 12-03-2004, 06:34 PM He's lucky that wasn't me because I would've caught him before he made it back to his car. He had already tried to get away once and hit and run is a felony so you had every right to detain him (aka citizens arrest) and use whatever means necessary to keep him from leaving... a broken knee-cap works pretty good I hear... ;)

I really admire your integrity. Me on the other hand, I'm hot headed and short tempered. Similar incident happened to me last year: a month right before I sold my Lexus IS300 for the RX8, this college kid side-swiped by cutting in front of me to get on the freeway entrance. He came out of no where with his 4-Runner, basically cutting thru the brush and shoulder to get on the freeway. His right rear fender side-swiped my front left fender, almost put me out of control. I was like "WTF" so I followed him, figure he was going to stop. But he never did and just kept on accelerating thru traffic. Luckly it was around 10:00pm so there weren't that many cars. I realized he wasn't going to stop so I kept pace around 90+ mph. Just like you, I also called the police about the hit-n-run while giving chase.
He kept switching freeways so I had to constantly updating CHP (California Highway Patrol) on our location. Finally after about 15 miles, a CHP caught up with us. He signaled me to pull over and I did, while he maintain pursuit on the 4-Runner. After I pulled over, about 10 min later, another CHP pulled up behind me and asked me to follow him. We drove about 3 miles and we stopped at where the 4-Runner was pulled over.
The other driver was just a college kid. He kept lying to the CHP that I was the one who hit him, and because he thought I was crazy, he ran from me. However, turned out the kid had 1 oustanding traffic warrant and no insurance or updated registration. Naturally, the CHP believed my story and arrested him.
Because he had no insurance, I still had to pay $500 deductable to cover the damange, sucks!
i3man 12-05-2004, 03:42 AM It's been 2 days and I haven't heard anything from the police. To say the least, finding a hit and run suspect is not at the top of their priority list.
Happy Holidays everyone and drive safely.
poolsidenaz 12-05-2004, 09:21 AM That kinda crap right there scares me - that someone could lie so easily and possibly get out of it when it's my word/their word. Thank goodness they favored your side and obviously for good reason.
Good grief why are people so freaking irresponsible and then lie right through their eff'in teeth about it

SimplexEffect 12-05-2004, 09:35 AM :( Sorry to hear that man.
I would have been so enraged that I would chase that guy down and nudge the back side end of his car when no one was around.
But thats just my anger talking.
Anyways you should do a Private Trade.
Values on the rx8 to other dealers for the 04 ones want to give me $21,000 flat and nothing more. I only asked for a trade value out of curiosity and it pissed me off.
I had 2700 Miles and payed $32,000 cash for the 04 VR GT.
But after the guy named the price I said you are F'n Nuts, got up and walked off.
Later in the day he called my house and said he would be willing to give us $24,000.
So I would most likely go with a private trade if I was you.
