Some background first, I used to work at Blockbuster Video from the time I was 15 to 20 and it was possibly the most stressful job that I will ever have ever worked at. I have several funny/horror stories but I'll start with this. I wasn't actually there at the time this happened but this was so good that the manager on duty at the time soon told everyone about it.

See, we had this older woman working there, possibly in her 40s but looked much older. She was basically useless but the managers kept her around because they felt bad since she had a lot of kids and she really needed the money to support her family. Well, one day she was working the register but since it was a slow day she just kinda zoned off into her own world. Next thing you know, a customer is up front wanting to get checked out but he fails to get her attention to have her ring him up. After a few failed attempts he WHIPS OUT HIS CELL PHONE AND CALLS THE STORE. The ringing of the phone knocks her out of her funk so she picks up and the customer says "Can you please help me already?" After the manager found out about this it was all over. This was just one of the many classic moments involving this employee and I'll post more eventually. In the meantime does anyone have any retail horror stories or humorous ones?

Me and some co-workers did that same phone call thing at a Denny's one time. The waitress showed us to our seats and one girl went to the bathroom so we said we would order when she got back....... well she got back from the bathroom like a minute or two later, but only after waiting for half an hour or more, sending someone up to the front to ask for the phone number, then getting on my phone and calling up did we ever get someone to come back to our table. We laughed about it all night long.

Okay, this one's a little bit different. Next time you rent a video, ask the clerk if there are any comments on your account.

A few months ago I stopped in at my local video store (a once or twice weekly ritual) to pick up a movie. A new guy was working, and he cheked out my movie for me. As we waited for the prepaid card to print it's receipt via the credit card machine, he said, "Hmm..that's odd. Someone put a comment on your account, 'This guy looks like Moby.'" He turned to a coworker and asked, "Who's Moby?" I busted up laughing as soon as I got to the car. I don't know whether that was meant to be a compliment or an insult, but funny either way.

Well i worked at BBV for a long time (15-20) too and those comments can hurt. I was the manager on duty and some1 disputed a balance and wanted a printout of what the last months transactions were (check in/ check out / blah).

Im getting ready to print it.....he is kinda standing over my shoulder and see's this comment:

"This woman is a F$%cking B1tch"

To which he says: "that about my wife?"

I dont remember how i handled it...i think that i pulled up another acct then his then flipped back and forth deleting shit as i went and said that it wasnt his acct and it wasnt any1 else's acct.

I BS'ed my way outta it.....but lemme tell ya i was sweatin!

Ohhh man, same thing almost happened to me. One lady wanted to see her history and I knew she had some comments on her account about her. She wanted to see the history of her account and actually came around to see the screen. As soon as I pulled up her account I typed "cls" to clear the screen because or else this block of comments would show up flashing right before her eyes. And if she saw that there was no way I could bs my way outta that!

Here's another one. Around 1996 there was this huge snowstorm in the NY area where we received like two feet of snow. Pretty much everything was closed, except, you guessed it, Blockbuster Video! See, two of best friends worked there too and one of my friend's uncles was the main manager there so naturally since my other friend and I were good friends with the managers nephew we got called in. But it wasn't to open the store, it was to DIG HIS COROLLA OUT OF THE SNOW.

We all had to hitch some ride in some pick up truck to get down there and as soon as we did the manager went inside the store and we were left digging his car out. By the way, this was pretty much a lost cause because after getting all the snow off the car, a path had to be cleared from where his car was to the exit of the parking lot and there was no way we would've done that.

After that, we went inside the store and had to put away returns because the drop box was packed! I honestly want to know who wouldn't assume that we would give people breaks because there is an fn blizzard outside. And even if we didn't, these people are gonna brave the weather just so they wouldn't have to pay a $2 late fee? You would also think that these people would stay home, but nooooo. Like zombies they were coming to the store to see if we were open but we were just there to do other work so it's YOUR LOSS! Anyway, the drop box was packed and we all had to put the tapes away. Normally this is easy enough but try putting away a bunch of tapes with big snow boots on. It really slows you down.

After that we had to do another important job, break down cover boxes in the back room. We were back there for what seemed like 10 hours going on no food, since nothing was open, just to file away boxes. Ridiculous.

After that we were all ready to leave when an employee from another BBV that recently closed, came to pick up his paycheck. Why this couldn't wait til tomorrow I don't know since the banks were all closed for him anyway. Well this guy had a beater of a car and darndest thing happened, he got stuck! So after all that we then had to push this guy's car out of the parking lot. Once that was finished then it was time to go home. A long day that could've been spent relaxing was spent at work in the middle of a blizzard.
