Stopped by my dealer on a whim today (first time since ordering, actually), and when I told the receptionist I was looking for status on an RX-8 order under LaFerle, I just about choked when she said "ooh yeah, I heard them talking about that order today..."

Turns out that this morning, they had gotten VIN numbers for two of the RX-8s on order. One of them was mine. Yes, I do mean VIN number rather than order number or any garbage like that; I have the VIN number in hand.

The sales guy quoted an early July delivery ("late June if you're really lucky"). I asked about a demo car arriving ahead of the orders and he said that my RX-8 would be the first the dealership would see.

Just for the record, my dealer is Suburban Mazda in Troy, Mich., and the vehicle ordered was a Velocity Red 4AT (yes, I know, an auto, feel free to look down on me, but the choice wasn't mine), with GT, red/black leather, and a Nav system.

Deconstructing this using RX-7 conventions would yield:
JM1 = Mazda
FE = RX-8 chassis code
17 = body style (whatever you'd call the 8)
N = misc ID field (perhaps N for North America?)
9 = check digit
4 = model year code
0 = Plant Code (Hiroshima = 0)
100xxx = serial number

What i fail to understand is the serial number part of it, since historically mazda has used the first digit to indicate production year, and then subsequent digits for the serial of the car. If this is true, it would make my car among the first 600 produced...

I got my VIN today too. It looks like the same format. I have a Titanium RX-8 with the GT package coming soon I hope. They are still saying late June for it. I keep hoping. It is supposed to be their first car at this dealership in northeast Ohio. My VIN number is: JM1FE173540100XXX Our cars may be riding the same truck from California!

Is the VIN different for each country? The main number on my car that I assumed is the VIN is of the form SE3P-123456. It's on a plate in the engine bay in front of the driver plus etched into the bodywork in the middle of the engine bay under the windscreen. I don't have any numbers like those you're mentioning. That's the number I used for my insurance etc. Just curious...

Hello to a fellow michigander... What options did you get the guys at Cook to add to yours? Suburban's been pretty staunchly following MSRP but I'd love to see if I could get some stuff thrown in...

I haven't yet looked at insurance and will probably not until it gets closer to delivery. Sorry I can't help you out more in that dept.!

Congrats Laferle just one silly question was your car a Pre-order or an allocation My salesman at Sterling goofed and put me as an allocation so I am wondering if that is going to affect the arrival of my car (first allocation).
And in terms of insurance do not worry State Farm quoted me $591/6mths. here in Michigan note that was $18 more than a 2000 4Runner.

Called my insurance company to get a quote for the RX-8. I currently drive a 1994 Mazda 626 4 cylinder. I pay $1,400 per year.
He said for the same coverage I would pay $2,000 for the RX-8 (not accurate - need vin #). I asked for a quote for the 2003 Infiniti G35C - $1,400 per year. I would pay the same for my 1994 Mazda 626 with 120,000 miles, which is worth around $2,500 as I would for a new 2003 Infiniti G35C that's worth 30K?

I think it was ordered as an allocation, since they didn't have my e-mail address on the order. I had them add my email to the order yesterday, which I think made it a preorder.

You should be able to give them any 3 digit number in place of the "XXX" for a valid VIN. I'm at work and don't have the number with me but it was 6XX (six hundred something). Hope this helps.

hey my dealer just called me too and told me my VIN is in...he didn't have it on hand, he had the reference number, but told me mine was built during the first week of April...still no definitive ETA...

he also just called to inform me that he's got a brochure waiting on his desk with my name on it...

i really didn't expect such great service from Mazda after reading all those customer service ratings...:D

EDIT: the feeling that my baby is probably crossing the seas right now is pure bliss...i don't think i've ever really wanted a car as bad as this one!

Right now, they just added the cargo net and Rotary Accent Pkg and were firm that they would not charge more than MSRP. I'm still hoping for S-Plan!!!

Has Suburban kept in touch with you at all? I've called once to see when it would be delivered and they said sometime in June. I'm wondering if I called now if they would change their tune?

Why hasn't Mazda sent these VINs out to you people? We were to get emails when the cars started. Why hasn't Mazda sent us the new brochures since we are on there lists? Why are allocation cars starting before preorders?

State Farm insured me for $487.31/half. That's good considering my Jetta is under Progressive for about $600/half.

my dealer doesnt have my VIN either, but did say he did see my car on his inventory list- slated for late June delivery. He also said he saw that the cassette I added is listed on the car.

You guys are lucky to have a VIN. As someone else posted previously I have yet to even receive the promised e-mail with VIN. I do have an order number and it states "Estimated/Acutal Procuction date: APR WK/1 (EST)". I placed my pre-order 1/14/03!

I did stop by Irvine Mazda today and picked-up the brochure (they claim to have just received them today). Pretty cool brochure - but none of the sales people knew anything about either the port options, or potential delivery dates - typical.

Re: insurance, I just checked with my insurer (21st Centruy) and they quoted approx rates of $464/6 mos for the RX-8 and $539/6 mos. for the G35 Coupe (I have orders submitted for each). Not enough t help me decide either way. I'll just have to wait to drive the car.:p

If you gave Mazda your e-mail, but didn't order over the internet, should you expect the (6) emails that are supposedly to keep us informed?

Just Fyi, you will not be able to get S-Plan on the RX-8 til atleast January 2004. This info comes from a Q&A sheet that Mazda provided to the dealers back in January, when we made the original first pre-sold orders. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but....Looks like you will need to wait to get S-Plan or buck up and pay the piper to get it now.

My suggestion to you is to clear this up with your dealer if it is not already.

My RX-8 got its VIN# the other day as well. Mazda sent the dealers a letter on what to expect for time frame on RX-8's. Pre sold orders are to be in about Mid July and others to follow in late July early August.

Dealer said delivery date still showed TBD but my vehicle has the lowest VIN in their system (I was the first pre-order in my city! 8:00 am on first day of pre-order sales)

Dealer also said that they have dealer "rotary" training scheduled for early June and a real production RX-8 is to arrive at the dealership for that training. He will call for me to drive it as soon as it arrives. He said the dealership gets one for training and demo purposes and is prohibited by Mazda from selling the demo until Oct. 31st.

Got my VIN # also. I still have a TBD ETA. But at least I have a VIN! Woohoo! The dealer is telling me June, but I'm thinking July will be more realistic. Plus, I have to be out of town for a week in the middle of June so I'm really hoping I'll be here when it comes in, or I'll have a fit. No way is my wife driving that bad boy home.

I'll get an insurance quote today.

Now I do not feel so alone...my dealer has provided no info..I would change dealers but I would lose my Preorder.....

Mine was from the dealer. He checked last Thurs. and it was not in system -- but it was there on Mon.

Dealer seems to be getting more on the ball with RX things. When I first pre-ordered he was clueless but helpful. Now he seems to be on top of things and getting excited about the RX. He wants the advertising to begin because he has first allocation units coming and only 3 pre-orders. Says nobody but the diehard rotary fans have any idea the car is coming out soon.

The latest updated list from my dealer has no VIN#s and all build dates are TBD. :(

Just order my RX 8 on 5-20-2003. Estimated /actual production date JUNE WK/1 (EST). Changed my color from red to silver hope I did the right thing. The silver looks real nice on the Pro 5 thay had in the show room. Got it loaded Dealer is giving me 25% off all accessories except the nav, Grand touring package. Also His MSRP $26,680.

Their was a post a while back about an email from Mazda to dealers saying the emails for pre-orders would start in June. So we have a couple of more week before we find out what we already know.

I still don't have my VIN yet. My dealer checked this last Tuesday and still nothing for any of the cars on order. Maybe next week I will here something.

I called my dealer and asked if my order number had changed to a vin number yet. She said she had an invoice for the car and the vin number and the Build date. But she did not have any word on a delivery date, that part is still unknown to us all.

I am in the first allocation- ordered 1/9/2003, but I dont think the dealer put it in until 1/15/2003.

I am not officially a preorder, though my dealer tried to convert me by putting my email on the car's order

i am in the first allocation. I ordered it 1/11/03.

My order went in the second allocation. Supposedly, those cars that are pre-orders for specific people will move ahead of those the dealer ordered to max allotment. For example, in the first allotment my dealer ordered a car just like mine + navigation. In theory, my car will arrive before that car. Which is only fair. You don't want "Joe-impulse" walking in off the street and driving off in an RX-8 while you continue to wait!

I'll test the theory when I go to the dealer and check the list. If that other car doesn't have a VIN# it could be proof.

I know that in mid-April my car was EST JUN/1st wk and early May it reverted to TBD.

I was surprised because he seemed very knowledgeable about the whole process except this. Maybe I was asking the wrong question and confused him. I'll stop in and check it out for myself. Would be nice to get a photocopy for my records and collection of stuff anyway.

You probably talked to the same guy I did at Mazda South... Mike. He gave me my VIN, too, and said they typically see vehicles from Japan about 4 weeks after the VIN. If that's true, maybe we'll have our 8s by late June! I'm hopin'!

well i work for a mazda dealer. (i pre-ordrered on 1/8/03, a yellow rx-8 with touring package and navigation system. i also ordred a few accessories). so i just asked the sales manager here in southern california it is dated with todays date (5/28/03). he did not have my correct email address so i have not been receiving emails. also i have seen a grerat rx-8 book that the service manager got from a mazda meeting he went to. it is a hard cover book with great pics and stuff. im not sure if it is the one we will be getting, i have no idea where to get one. i have talked to a few people at mazda they too have seen and looked at the book, but also do not know where i can get one.

I got the hardback book today in the mail. Wow! This is a really nice book tracing the development of the RX-8, with lots of info and pictures. Looks like they spent some bucks making it. Nice job, Mazda!

Finally got my VIN! I wish someone would start a seperate web page registry so we could all enter our VIN#'s, name, location, etc. Then we could see if any of our cars followed a pattern on the assembly line or if nothing else make sense of the number sequence. Wishful thinking!

Come on Guys! If you have your vin, get over to the registry site and be among the first people to get your name on the list. If you feel funny about posting the full number, just substitute the last 2 digits with Xs. Lets get some unity going between us.

The email group was created back in 2001, but the website has only been up a few months now.

IF YOU DONT HAVE IT YET you can still list yourself on the registration page by entering a temporary vin of 17 digits starting with JM. (JMXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX works fine). You will get a password sent to you enabling you to enter the real vin later, or to make changes to your registration.

Like being a member of an exclusive group of people. Those who own an RX-8. Because the RX-8 is Rotary powered and that makes it a unique automobile. A lot of people like to preserve the Rotary Car heritage and will document the ownership of a car such as the RX-8, tracking its progress through the years - from first owner to last owner - the color or other changes it went through - location, etc. A lot of people find that interesting. A few wont.

Miata2RX8....... Looks like you and I are pretty close on the VIN. My last four of the VIN are 1384. My car is the Sunlight Silver two below yours.

Since I am the Silver #1073 listed for Valrico (Tampa) Fl, my car should be arriving close to your's Miata2RX8 and Rotorboy.

Are VINs sequencial? Do they build number 1, then number 2...,
etc.?

Called today and finally got my build date and VIN. My Velocity Red 6MTGT rolled off the line Wednesday with the VIN: JM1FE173840101553. Sweet.

No, but typically they are pretty close in build order, not necessarily sequential. That is how Ford does it at least.

I called on Friday to ask, and he started to say he'd call back, but I requested he email me the info instead. He said he'd email me either way (whether he had a VIN or not). I spent 2 days in PA, returned on Sunday evening, and no email from my dealer. I was disappointed. I called this morning and asked for the info again. He called me back in 3 minutes with the VIN and build date.

I have not received my "next" email from Mazda yet.

Therefore, we have to force the local dealer's service more efficiency. Also another concern, we are keeping push our dealer to offer more update imformation that mean we really want our 8 as soon as possible. so they know all of us must buy the 8, Is it possible they will rise the price ove the MSRP even they had promised us to offer the MSRP?

i e-mailed rx8orders to get my VIN and build date. they got back to me the day after i sent the e-mail.

Vin is same as rest, chk digit 6, 01129.

It was printed 5/23. Reminds me, still haven't gotten my book - but it was forwarded by PO of my old address last Monday.
Sales mgr has it on her 'wish list' to arrive by 6/30.

Well, I just emailed rx8orders to see what my status is and they tell me they can't find my name in the system. I don't understand this, because I've already gotten the first few emails (order submitted, factory received order, and the x2 thing) and I received the RX-8 book last week.

This whole pre-order setup seems to have some problems. I assume no one has gotten official emails about their cars being built or shipped, even though many have already posted that they have VINs, etc.

HAHAHAHAHAH You too eh! RX8orders told me the same #@$!ing boolshit too. I too have received the emails, even got a new one today (some crap about the Renesis being #1). Go figure :mad: :mad:

Well at least you got a book. I didn't. I would love to get that book as I had the RX-7 one and thought it was awesome. Oh wells.

the renesis engine is #1 email is not a pre-order email. it's like the x2 email, from a seperate email list compiled from people clicking the "keep me informed" button on the rx8website. wouldn't it be nice if the pre-order emails worked as well?

Does the dealer have your vin yet? If anything they should have it as soon as the car goes into production.

Well, my dealer doesnt even know where my car is at let alone having a VIN.. I asked them about three weeks ago whether or not if I could change to a GT from a T, but they couldnt tell me then and still cant.

At the moment, I'm flying blind into this pre-order. I thought I had the answers... MP5, I hope at least your dealer can help you more than mine is..

Don't know, last time I called he said it was scheduled for May build and should come in July. I think I'll pay them a visit sometime this week... you're with John Hine too, did you see if any of the cars had VINs when you were there?

That assumption is correct. No further official e-mails have been received through the pre-order system for well over a month. I suspect we should get the next one any day.

I (and many others) got their VIN# direct from their dealer, while others have received them through a request to RX-8orders.

... while others havent gotten jack$#it despite supposedly being on pre-order..
