It took slashdot forever to pick up on this. I got this issue back in August.

I sympathise with Help-Desk workers, although I prefer to call them the "Helpless Desk". It's not their fault, organizations want a low-cost solution to the impossible complexity they've created. So you get someone behind a desk with not much training or experience and a lot of stock answers that don't apply to a large number of actual situations, and constant calls about stuff they've never heard of in their life, all with someone on the other end who is already frustrated and expects an immediate resolution. I've worked in close proximity to Help Desk practitioners. You need a heck of a thick skin and a plan to get out before you burn out.
