ok I've seen under 10 in the state of minnesota not including those at the dealerships

I've gotten in contact with about 4 of you (left a message on your car)

curious how many more there are of you and if so please post here and maybe we can all meetup? Northstar Rotaries is a nice clubc but they rarely meet up and I'm talking about a specifically RX-8 meetup

I haven't seen many 8's around either, especially here in Rochester. Been checking the MW forum from time to time to see if there's anything going on, but doesn't appear to be many Minnesotans with RX-8's. Either that, or we're a quiet group. Wouldn't mind getting together for a meet or whatever if you get some interest.

unfortunately I've been down to rochester often since my mother has been chronically ill over the past year...if I a trip is needed down there I'll get in contact with you

Truemagellen sorry to hear about your mothers illness, hope things will be ok for your mother and your family.
I live in Lakeville, and have seen only one red 8 out here and one green in the Burnsville area. Where do you take your 8 to have it serviced? Take mine to walser in Burnsville and have to say that they treat me great. Walser told me that they have sold alot of 8's to people in the Woodbury area. Let me know if you ever get anything going for all of the 8 owners in the area, would love to attend. Unfortunately this time of year is quite busy for most of us and I would assume that most of us will have our cars in storage very soon.

Hey Rev,
Thanks for your kind words,

I believe I've seen about 8 RX-8s around town...one of them, a Titanium I left a message for to join this club, another a green one I actually met at a wedding party for a my GF's friend, and a red one I met at the Microcenter parking lot, also recommended the club.

The others I've seen on the road are a red, titanium, a silver x2, and a Black one.

I think in the spring I'll try to organize a small event...I'd like to see any mods people have done or just hang out...I'm crazy about this car so it would be nice to discuss it with others (instead of online)

As for the winter, this is my only car so I already had winter tires put on...it has already made a huge difference in traction even on dry pavement (I went with Blizzak LM22s, stock tire size and will buy new rims and possibly tires in the spring)...I just found out recently there is a beater car I have access to so when it is really nasty out the 8 will stay in the garage.

I take my car to Morries Mazda, my family has been taking cars there since 1982, with a 1982 Mazda 626, then a Mazda Millenia S, and now I take my RX-8

I have gotten to know the some of the guys who work there, Jason (head manager), Jim, and Nick...I usually go to Jim since Jason is usually managing...I have had only great experiences with them and everytime I've had a warranty work or TSB they give me a loaner car for free...it is easy since there is an enterprise rental place in the building :) Just know that non-warranty service work probably costs more then other dealerships, from the work they have done I'd say it is worth it.

I've heard the Walser and Polar mazda also have good service departments, we are fortunate in the Twin Cities...for really complex work (ie install lighter flywheel, more advanced clutch, differential work, engine, etc.) I'd stick with Morries

-Jason
ps. if you need any help with mods I'm not an expert but I've gotten to know lots about the car through a few installs (especially in the audio and video department)

go to the dealership they gave me a good deal on 18inch (stock size) blizzak LM-22s and installed them the same day and gave me rental car for free since I had some TSBs I found :)

if you don't want to be buying a new set of rims in the spring which is what I'll have to do, last time I checked Morries Mazda (on 394W) had a 17inch wheel and tires package in stock...get down there quick!

I may be one of the silver ones, I haven't seen another silver one driving around. I'm excited that it is snowing today because then I can see how my new snow tires work :D

I don't suppose anyone here had a red RX-8 at Morries a couple weeks ago, did they? I went for an oil change and there was one up on the lift with its engine out. A little sad, but I suppose nothing is perfect. It's amazing though, the engine looks so impossibly small when it's sitting on the floor without anything attached to it.

I live in Minnetonka and have a yellow RX-8. I've had mine for about six weeks.

I regularly see a red RX-8 at the Fort Snelling LRT Park and Ride. I've also seen another yellow RX-8 around town. One came up the on-ramp next to me on I35W in downtown Minneapolis. I was so surprised I almost ran off the road. Other than that I have seen one black 8 with snow tires on 494.

I also use Morries. I have a 2001 Protege that I bought there.

I had Blizzaks put on the week before Thanksgiving because I was driving to Northern New York and back through Canada. I hit a couple of snow covered roads and the tires worked great. I can use my van though in the City when the salt starts to fly. Morries is actually storing my summer tires for me and will store my winter tires during the summer.

I work in Downtown Minneapolis but I also have an office in downtown Saint Paul. I have been driving alot for work lately and have been on the road quite a bit during the day.

I would be most interested in a some sort of meet with other RX-8 owners.

I wasn't the one in uptown...I had snows put on the stock rims so they are hard to tell

I work on Nicollet and 12th

1. I saw a Yellow one owned by a member on here I know

2. and another one...a Titanium Grey with a guy in his 20s or so...was that you?

I drove next to this person while crossing Nicollet Mall near Peavey Plazda

I'm still here, just been avoiding various forums the last couple of weeks/months due to work load.

I'm a maplewood guy, work downtown mpls on 2nd and 6th...yea smack downtown... and I drive out to stillwater twice a week and down to eagan once a week and on weekends.

I've seen very few 8's rolling down 36. I've seen a couple here and there at wild games last year, and a few on the west metro but I don't see a lot on the east metro side.

I'm also a member of the North Star Rotary Rockets. Went to one meet, but haven't have free time to meet up with the rest of the 7's.

So if you see a really dirty blue 8 in minneapolis, maplewood, eagan, or stillwater...that's me. One of these years I'm going to spring for vanity plates with Vortex8 on it...right now I can't the soon-to-be wife likes the current plate since the letters make her name...women what are you gonna do.

Haven't done much work on mine yet, just minor cosmetic things...blue lights in the interior, illuminated shifter, passenger alum. foot rest, fender strakes, and that's been about it. I'll do the flywheels later once warrenty is done and I'm thinking hard about cold air intake and tacking on a turbo...but I want others to be the test cases. I want to see how much wear and tear is done to the engine and if its still buggy. Exhaust will be replaced when the stock stuff rusts out, and I have more funds.

But if you guys ever meet up some place, keep me in the loop.

Hi guys,

I just got my Shinka this past Monday at Walser in Burnsville and thought I'd join in and say hello. I haven't driven it much yet, especially this weekend with all the snow, but can't wait for some warmer weather. I'll definitely be buying Blizzaks for next year, I just didn't expect to need them now.

I've really been waiting for a darker blue to be offered, I'm just not crazy about the winning blue, but when I saw the Shinka with the black cherry I had to check it out. Once I saw it, and took another test drive to be sure, I had to buy it.

If you decide to get together, let me know and I'll see if I can meet.

Hello! I'm glad to see there are others around here.. I think over the last year I've only seen one or two RX-8's driving around. It's nice to know there are others with a similar rotary afflicition.. ;)

I just got my (used) 2004 RX-8 on Monday from Walser... It's a Titanium Gray one.. (16k miles)

About the only thing I've noticed so far is that I think the car is going to need new break pads. Anyone have any recommendations?

there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) on 'squealing' brake pads...just bring in your car, tell them they are squealing and they will replace them for free under warranty

in fact bring it to Morries off 394 and 494 and they'll give you a free rental car for the day :) just ask!

fray
03-23-2005, 12:31 PM
Thanx!

I just went through the TSB list.. and after driving it for three days the ones I saw that look like they may be applicable to my car:

01-001/04 Engine Cover Grommets missing
04-006/04 Break Squeal ;)
01-008/05 PCM Flash

I also noticed that one of the catches on the battery box is broken off.. (no big deal..)

And finally after driving it home I noticed all of the tire valve stems don't have caps. Is this normal? I plan to drop by the dealer today and ask for 4 valve stem caps, as well as the TSBs (and the 05 Key FOB.)

So is Morries that much better of a Mazda dealership? When I first starting looking at the RX-8 (a year and a half ago or more).. They gave me a run-a-round and weren't very nice. (sales side...)

So far (other then the financing at Walser) I've been happy with them.. (They tried to take me for a ride on the financing.. so I went elsewhere.. save almost $12k over a 5 year loan because of it!)

Ohh one other question. Has anyone here had the upgrade performed on their HU/DVD Nav system? I'm a little reluctant to remove the HU and Nav and send it somewhere for an upgrade. But I'd really like to use my iPod with the HU. (And Nav upgrade sounds very interesting....)

truemagellen
03-23-2005, 02:16 PM
Morries sales are still negotiating based...they don't have set adjusted prices like Polar or Walser so if you are not prepared it may be intimidating . But their service department was ranked #2 in the US for Mazda Service Departments a year or two ago and is outstanding.

When you bring your car try to have Jason or Jim as your representative...in fact when you schedule an appointment as to speak to either of them. Jason is the service department manager and Jim really knows his stuff.

A helpful tip at any service department. Bring in the TSBs. This way they don't have to search for them on the computer and it means you know what you are talking about :D

Caps missing is not normal...they are only a few cents so you may get them for free.

DO NOT buy the 05 key at ANY dealership. I called around they only have retail prices and it is non-negotiable...that means $235 for the thing!!!!!!! AHHH I can get it for you for much less than that :).

And lastly, HU upgrade...I was one of the first ones to send it to Matt (thew owner of www.mazdaparts.com )...it was very easy and everything works great...if you want to see it working with the PIE adaptor I can show you that too (I don't have an IPOD so no Icelink but I know how to install it). In fact if you really need to I can help you install it.

fray

Ahh thank you.. I'm used to Jeep dealerships, so I've got to learn a lot of new stuff about Mazda.. :)

Via looking at this board, I've found the prices of the key fob at Rosenthal Mazda and at Mazdaparts.. Both are much better then retail. :)

As for the valve stems, I suspect they can find me 4 of them without trouble..

(and I found one more TSB that needs to be dealt with.. the Milky substance when checking the oil.. YUCK that was nasty. 01-009/05)

Good news.. went to the dealer asked about the valve stem caps.. the sales guy I worked with acted surprised.. we went to the parts counter.. the guy there said "ya you definatly should have caps".. He went into the back and got me 4 polished aluminum "OEM" caps.. (I think he said they were for a Mazda6)

They look pretty good, and best of all they didn't charge me anything.

I also have scheduled for sometime in the near future (once they get parts) the TSB for the front breaks, Engine cover gromets and white oily substance on the dipstick. Service guy was pretty nice about the whole thing.

Again, thanks for the help!

Screw the housing prices, way way too expensive..

HELLO FELLOW RX-8 OWNERS!

I want to start my first post by saying THANK YOU for all your helpfull information! I got my Escort Passport successfully installed along with my minidisc player. I have logged 4000 miles in the last 4 weeks and it has been nothing short of shear joy. Well.... there was this morning when I hit a monster pothole on 61 and bent both left rims. Here's what I'm planning on. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on wheels.

Thanks,

Well, Funny you should ask....

I have 4000 miles on her, and I hit a pothole today....

Soo, In the near future I will be looking at two options:

Buying 2 new OEM wheels (Dealer price $500 Each)

OR:

Option B:
Buying 4 new wheels

Alright a fellow eastsider. Might see you rolling around phalen one day.

As for wheels...tire rack has some good looking rims (better than stock) for less than dealer oem rims. You'll have to wait a few days or weeks but it would save you $.

Or you could go to Fred's and see what they have in stock.

Tough call, I'd start at freds and then if they don't have anything I'd see if they could bang them out a bit enough to drive on them and then order out new rims from tire rack. 2000 for stock rims is outrageous.

just as I PMed Disco since I just bought a set of used OEM/Factory rims all 4 in virtually perfect condition...under 4k miles on them...for $400 and it came with center caps and lug nutz w/locking lugs.

shipping was $65 from Indiana but should have been more like $100 the seller managed a staples or something

I'm done lots of research on this since I was going to buy a set of Roja R2-5s 19x9.5 19x8.5s but the wait time was so long my winter tires pleaded with me to take start the summer break. I picked up a set of Rotary Centers for $40 for all 4!

Now I like the stock wheels with the rotary centers so much I don't even really want aftermarket rims anymore :D so now I have lots of cash freed up...which is going right back in the bank...except some for a Hymee Exhaust :p

The were mounted by Discount Tire in Eden Prairie, with help of Manager Don Sweet...nice guy I recommend him :) DONT let your dealer mount and balance they will damage your wheels and charge you almost double!!!!!!!

Iceis, I've only seen 3 (including my own) RX-8s since they were released. (at least around here) 1 downtown Minneapolis, mine, and a black on in Apple Valley the other day.

When I travel to California or Florida I see a lot more of them around. (A lot more is about 5-10..)

I guess i dont mind that. If the rx8 was more common then it wouldnt be as much fun. I did finally find another though. Apperantly a guy down my block just bought one. (I think seeing mine in the driveway for 3 months made him do it) :) Im gona see if i can get him on here.

Greetings! I'm another Minnesota RX-8 owner--formerly lived in the Twin Cities, and now located in the heart of "Lake Country" in Alexandria, MN. (that's about two hours north and west of the Twin Cities for those not familiar with the state). I've had my car about four weeks and just recently passed 1000 miles, so I can now enjoy her reving engine. Only taken it up to about 8k a time or two, but it has a sweet sound. Mine is a Velocity Red grand touring with appearance package, spoiler and tinted windows. I believe this is the finest handling car I ever owned--it just seems to do so many things well. I get down to the Cities about once a month and I'll keep looking to see some other 8's, since they're pretty rare out this direction.

Here is the copy of the email I sent the MN RX8 owners on the club (with personal info removed)...those MN RX-8 owners who have not contacted me about this event please PM (Private Message me) and I'll get you connected:

After a significant amount of you could not make a May 7th date (I forgot it was Mothers Day weekend, sorry! :) a new date is set. Sunday May 22nd, at 1:00pm same location, meet at Ridgedale Shopping Center. If everyone could please 'RSVP' just so we have a general idea who to expect that would be great, please RSVP my email address only (instead of the whole list :).

I have added one or two people to this list so I will reiterate the info here: Ridgedale Shopping Center is located at Plymouth Road and 394...meet in the northwest corner of the parking lot, near the gas station (located by the Bacio's/Champs). For further directions please visit: http://www.ridgedalecenter.com/Info/GettingHere/

From there we can drive to the lakes, east, west, south, wherever, anything is a possibility so really everyone brainstorm and then the day we meet we can form a consensus.

Looking forward to seeing all of you and again feel free to email me or call (if for instance you are get lost).

I think I can get it for you under 3grand and shipped ASAP...shipping would be extra but then again I just had a Hymee Exhaust shipped from California and the box is bigger then some of my co-workers...and shipping was under $50 ground fedex

just tell me soon and I'll get you incontact with the owner...the store is www.mazdaparts.com and the website is being upgraded this week so you'll have a hard time reaching him (they have a few greddys in stock last time I checked on Sat). There may be a special gold price on the item (not sure) as well that you would need a gold account to see...that is where I come in :D.

I'll get in touch with Matt the owner later today (want to thank him for his super safe packaging for the exhaust :D) and see what he has...hopefully the website will be fixed up or atleast a message on the site saying what is going on...oh I'll check on gold pricing too.

I'm curious, once you put in the turbo... how does the ECU react to it?

Or are there some electronics that go w/ the turbo to help program the ECU to the boost?

fray
05-11-2005, 12:17 PM
(switching topics slight).. What is the deal w/ all of the little high school kids in their hondas with tin-can mufflers that pull up next to me... rev their engine like it's going to explode? Then they rev/drop the clutch and squeel their tires and slowly drive away when the light turns green.. Hell the 8 can out accelerate these morons, but I'm not stupid enough to street race at 3:30 in the afternoon!
(Hell I'm not stupid enough to street race at all..)

WTF, are they they stupid? (This has happened to me 3 different times on Old Shakopee and Portland in Bloomington..)
(...ok back on to topic...)

truemagellen

The Greddy Turbo which Speedrx8er is installing comes with the Greddy Emanage unit and plugs into the stock ECU wiring harness, this allows an overide/control of many sensor inputs and allows the turbo to work with the ECU's complex environment.

The E-manage unit also manages the turbo...and with additional components boost can be controlled with the unit and a Greddy emanage software for tuning.

As for the kids and their revving...with the Hymee installed it is tempting to give them a nice concert but I ignore them...although once Speedrx8er is setup his car will be a sleeper powerhouse and sure will suprise a 350z or Mustang owner off the line (on a track of course :p)

HONDAS + racing strips + BIG Wing + loud farting pipes!!!!!!!!!! Tell me about it I live in St. Paul. Tons of hmmmm whats the word I am looking for? oh Yah RICE Boys ( guess it ok for me to say it since I am asian ehhhehe :D ).

I get a few of them Rev their engine at me :) Most of the time I just ignore them. But sometime I just can't help it :) lol best ever was when one pull up and rev his engine with his girl setting next to him. OH boy was that fun!!!!! Left him in the dusk. Then slow down so he can catch up and as he pass me. I just Smile :)

How is that Hyme work out for you?

Yes, I am keeping mine as a sleeper. Athough I never had any problems with the Z or the mustang group.

I've had a couple of mustangs and older camero's rev their engines and take off at stop lights when I'm next to them.. but I just laugh.. and it doesn't bother me.. (probably the fact that the car doesn't sound like a honda w/ the coffee can muffler.)

Those two that stopped at the light, the only thing "riced" was the coffee can muffler.. the paint was peeling on the cars, the door sills were rusting out.. but nothing like a 4+ inch chrome tail pipe, a lot buzzing noise as they reved... and no traction when they slipped the clutch.. ;)

Speedrx8er, thanks for the comment on the avatar. :) I figured that me hugging my car (and it hugging me) would be pretty funny. ;)

My only issue with the kit I did not get the install instructions. So I downloaded the instruction on-line which is not really detail.
for example:
Go from point A to point B <-- but it does not give you directions :(

The part discription does not match with the part number with .

I am thinking about rewritting the install pdf and give it more detail.
It'll slow my install down a bit but it should help other with their DIY install.

Are the Oil Pump air Metering hose and the Engine by pass hose from the
oil filler pipe already routed to our stock Air MAS?

truemagellen
05-13-2005, 03:12 PM

Day 2:

Piping Done!!. Looks like I need to go grab another front OS. The old one still refused to move. Anyways, I went ahead and install the down pipe to the Cat and turbo. Boy, did it took awhile to tighten the Down pipe to the turbo. SO
LITTLE ROOM TO WORK WITH.
With a little coaching. Connecting the Down pipe to the CAT was easy because I did not completely remove the CAT Of the car's body.
The Piping and reasemble took longer then I thought. I still have to install the e-management system.

Ran into a problem. The down pipe adapter bracket holes did not line up with the stock ones.
tomorrow I will drill another hole.

Last step is to check every nuts and bolts are tighen. Fill her up with oil, give the turbo some oil and ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM.

So how does the GReddy turbo hook up? Is it one of those that the compressor is in the back of the car and you have to run airlines to the back of that car? Or did they place the compressor up in the engine compartment somewhere?

Also does your kit have an intercooler? Where does that sucker get mounted?

Speedrx8er
05-16-2005, 11:13 AM
Turbo location:
The kit comes with a header and you mount the turbo to it.

Intercooler:
Yes the Kit comes with an intercooler.

Its a bolt on kit. It comes with everything you need. But you will probably need to buy some add-on(BOV, Boost Gauge, Oil catch pan etc..). I only have the BOV add-on.
I plan on buyng a cheap boost gauge for now.

cool thing is the makers just cracked the WDS codeswhich means ALL the data from the ECM (engine control module for others who are reading this) is accessible!!!!!!!!!!! means much better tuning possiblitiy for FI applications :) :)

Speedrx8er, after looking at your turbo configuration, I was curious what you were going to do.

Is there a way you can reuse the old airbox cover and adapt it (or the intake pipe) to fit better in the stock location?

I'm also curious if the stock airbox intake has enough air coming into it for your turbo, assuming you did find a way to reseal it shut.

Speedrx8er
05-22-2005, 10:04 PM
I am pretty sure it will not fit. Unless I chop it up. like you, I am not sure if I use the stock air box if it'll get enough air. How ever there is a stock air tube the lets air in from the outside.

Do you know if the emanagement tool can monitor boost?

truemagellen
05-23-2005, 12:12 PM
I think so but I do not know so :p...there are some screenshots of the program somewhere around here

as for the ashtray...u may know this already but...

1. unscrew shift knob
2. use small flathead screwdriver wrapped in one layer of electrical tape and stick it inbetween the silver of the console accent and the center console near the shift boot...then pry up...ones you have a hold of the center console piece you can pull...pull hard! and the 6 or so clips will release
3. if you have heated seat buttons disconnect those...they are colorcordinated so dont worry about mixing them up
4. now there are two black screws keeping the ash tray in place...unscrew those
5. now pull hard on the entire ashtray and ashtray door...it will dislodge...becareful not to scratch the surrounding plastic
6. disconnect connector for the lighter plug...this will be easy
7. disconnect connector for ash tray light...this will be a pain in the ass
8. now you can play around with the ash tray, remove the lighter plug///dremel it out whatever

if you want pics of how to do this I can muster some up or take some more

Sorry don't know where the ECT Temp Sensor is located.
Only tuning I did was with the BOV.

I just bought a black RX8. I live in St. Paul. I don't see many RX's around here either - although I just took the car up north to Lutsen to celebrate my wedding anniversary. While driving up to Grand Marias (sp?) admist all the pickups pulling boats or minivans full of kids, I passed a blue RX8 heading the other way.

Aric.

1st and 2nd gear I'm running 3 and in the rest of the gears it gets higher...5th gets 5 and sometimes 6th will get around 6psi??? I just called this place and they said I can bring my car in to get Dynoed, so we will look for leaks and see what horsepower I'm getting. I wonder if my wastegate is set low by the factory by accident or something? I'll keep you posted...Joey
