I need help persuading my dad the the rotary is not a pos. He's a mechanic, ~30yrs, and when I brought up my interest in the rx-8 he immeditaly said,"No, rotaries are a peice of shit". he's biased to pistons and has never worked on or researched the rotary. So, please give me some help on what to say to persuade him otherwise, Thanks.

Better yet, make your own money and buy your own car. That way you won't have to ask your dad's opinion about it.

Theres a well respected study somewhere from the 80's I think, found that a NA rotary came only 2nd in reliability/longevity to a mercede's v8 diesil.
Its an engine with only 3 moving parts, not a lot to break, so long as there kept well serviced (oil change) and dont overheat it'lll last long enough.

Try contacting Mazda. They must have lab bench results
on RENESIS and maybe have reported to technical conferences
for industry.

At my age it's slightly hard to pay full for a vechile. Escpecially when the best job I can get around here is $7/hr. I've been working my ass of and had an agreement with my parents, I make it in the top 5% in my school, they pay half of a vechile under 30,000. So, they won't be paying for it all. So, I'd appreciate it if you'd stop acting like a dick, dick.

NikoN, just cool off a bit. The guys on here have no idea how old you are, how much you made and what's your finanical situation. There are a couple of guys here who are 17, 18 and are buying there own RX-8. There guys here in their mid-20s who are planning to buy the 8 and share it with their parents. So just relax, don't be too stress-out alrite ? We all like the car and we sure want you to get it too.
This terms of people being bias against the Rotary Engine, I shared similar experienced with you NikoN. I have several friends who are auto mechanics and everyone told NOT TO EVEN THINK about the RX-8 because "rotaries are CRAP". Well, you will just have to educate them. First of all, you have to educate and understand where they are coming from. I bet you, most mechanics out there have NO IDEA how to fix a Rotary Engine and they must have heard about all those horror stories about the FD's engines. The key here is let them understand and tell him to CONVINCE you that Rotaries are crap. Tell them that NA Rotaries had a very good track record, tell them about only the FD's engine had been the problematic rotary. Tell them that it only got 5 move parts, no fan belt, no cam, no values, no piston rings.... (yea we got apex seal but shhhhhhhhh.....)
Hope this helps. Good luck. By the way you are very very lucky already, last time I made it to the top 5%, I only got a stereo.... and that's my dad's old stereo from the living room.
