There were a few threads about what browsers people use and a lot of talk about Mozilla/Firefox in them. So I thought I would let eveyone know that since today is November 9th, Firefox 1.0 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) has been offically released. It looks like their website it getting slashdotted pretty hard (I actually can't get to it right now...). So you may have to wait for a little while to get it. But enjoy the goodness of an IE free life!

I'd like to bump this to ask how people have found Firefox to use. Is it fast? Flexible? Crash-free?

Thanks.

Firefox is my browser of choice. I use it for 100% of my web browsing. It is fast and doesn't crash any more than internet exploder does. Flexible, that word does not describe the customization you can do to this browser. :D The site did get hammered the first day, but all is well now.

I am another faithful believer in Firefox. IE is just too slow. Firefox is surprisingly faster than IE and have a bunch of useful plugins. In particular, a built in media player that interfaces with just about every media player out there (i.e. winamp, windows medial player, etc.) No more swapping windows for me to change what music I'm listening to.

Thanks very much.

A related question. I'm lookingi into Firefox because my Windows XP Tablet edition has crashed a few times over the last week and the culprit seems to be Netscape 7.2. Has anyone had similar problems?

I've heard that Netscape is not going to be releasing further developments. Any truth to the rumor?

Thanks.

Netscape is a big bloated mess right now. The latest on that is AOL is reviving the project and using the firefox code base for it. We will see where that ends up.

In Firefox, does anyone knows how to make links open in a new tab, with a left click, by default? At present it is opening in a new window.

Disclaimer: I use Mozilla, not firefox, but I think firefox is just about the same.

I don't know if you can with a left click. You can make it so middle click opens the link in a new window. That preference should just be in the Tabbed Browsing section of the preferences. There should be something like "Middle click, control+enter, blah opens link in a tab.

For Mozilla there is a extension called MultiZilla that will make tabbed browsing even better. Like when you click on a link in an external application (like your email) it will open the link you browser window with a new tab instead of a new window. I don't know when or if they are planning on releasing multizilla for firefox or not. I wouldn't think there would be much they have to do for that...but who knows. Hope that helps...

I've looked through the options. It doesn't seem to have this facility. I could right-click, and open in new tab, but that's one additional click.
I'll stick with the Maxthon browser for now.

Control-click or middle-click will open links in a new tab.

However I believe you can do specifically what you're looking for with the "tab browser preferences" extension:

Unrelated, but I also recommend installing the AdBlock extension. No more banner ads.

How do you install extensions? I clicked on the install link on the extensions page, and nothing happened?

Did you see a yellow bar appear at the top of the page?

You have to allow extensions to be installed from the site.

installing extensions should take you to the firefox page and let you browse through and search.. clicking on the actual extension should bring a prompt to install. not sure if your problem is somewhere in the middle there, or if you aren't getting a prompt to install.

Personally, my browser of choice is currently opera.

really... try it. the themes implementation is so much better than firefox. it seems at least as stable as firefox for everything I have use for.. and it is prettier, with a lot more customizeability with keyboard commands and such.

I have been using opera for only a few days so far, and I was a previous firefox junkie.. so I don't have any stake invested in any browser in particular.. though I am completely impressed with opera. it's loading bar is great... tells you how many images, the speed the page is loading, what %, the time you have been connected to a page... etc.. very very nice. and rock solid.

Agreed. Opera is a good browser, but I have yet to actually use it. Currently, I use Mozilla and Firefox. They're pretty much the same browser. Tabbed browsing rules. I hope Mozilla can keep both browsers around. Anything is better than IE.

I just found firefox had a few glitches that annoyed me..

when you have any themes installed.. having my scrollbars disappear any time I opened a new tab was annoying... they were there, you could click on them to make em reappear...

but if it is solid/crash free, the little things are what begin to matter more.

but you are correct.. everything is better than IE.

I've been using FireFox and it's previous incantations for a while. I've switched around but tried usually to avoid using IE. So far 1.0 has been the best for what I'd like to do online. No problems at all for me. I only open up IE for our internal web sites cause the IT people won't code compliant web pages. Grrr.

There is great website which I use all the time to bypass all of those annoying web site which requires you to register with your email address just to view their content. It is called http://www.bugmenot.com

Now, they have the FireFox extension in which you can just right-click on a User Name Combobox and select their plugin option and its matches your current web site with a public username and password on their database. VERY VERY Useful tool.

I have set Firefox as my default browser. However when I click on a URL link in a document, IE opens up instead of Firefox. Is there a way to get around this?

So far I like firefox. strikes me as an uncanny clone of apple's safari...

I do like the extensions features. I installed the gmail notifier and the weather module. Kind of cool. Plus it seems to load faster than both ie and safari. If I could only figure out how to import my bookmarks from safari..., it prefers to take them from IE. ah well, I'll figure it out.

One thing it doesn't have that safari does is a little "x" inside the tab that lets me close that tab. on my copy I have to right click and select "close tab". anyone know of a shortcut?

my motto: keep pushing buttons. if that doesn't work, try kicking it really hard.

There should be a little red x all the way to the right on the tab bar. That is for closing the current tab. There was an extention that placed an x in each tab, but its been lost somewhere in the furry of ff upates.

ok, got it. weird. safari has the x at the edge of the tab, not the window. ok, solves that problem. still prefer safari's location. very weird.

thanx mrthundercleese

Yup, No problem. You can also middle click on the tab to close it. I forgot about that one.

I think I did not explain it clearly.
When I click on a link in an email (I use Outlook), it launches IE nstead of Firefox, although Firefox is set as the default browser. Hasn't anyone noted this?
right click open in new tab?

Nope, nothing that I have seen. All applications on my machine open links in FF. I don't run Outlook, but I did run a quick test in it just now. Check here (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Setting_Your_Default_Browser) and see if any of that helps.

Thanks for the link. It's not very straight fowrward, but got it to work. Now all links launches FF instead of IE. :)
The problem is I had Maxthon browser also installed and it would not automatically release priority to FF when I set it as default.

I've been using Firefox for a couple of weeks now, and I find it to be much better than IE. Anyone who is hesitant should give it a try; you can still keep IE, and even use both simultaneously if you want.

It's a faster-loading browser that doesn't crash as much, and has some cool features.

TABS!!!!
Great idea! I get really frustrated at my school when I don't have them. So much so that I downloaded it onto the school computer and promptly got in trouble. I heat FF 1.0.4 is out, and that it's smart to upgrade as 1.0.3 has some pretty serious security issues.
