1. Couldn't afford insurance on 2-door coupe I wanted, due to the turbos, two doors, age(16) and they overall value of the car made the symbol too high, the Rx-8 is a nice alternative, 4-door,NA, high crash-test rating. So, I can afford the damn thing

2. Rotary - Have never owned one, and it'd be a good thing for my dad's shop to have to do some research in. In my small town people barely know what a piston is, let alone a rotor.

3. I think the price is a pretty damn good deal for this performance. I'm not very familiar with the aftermarket on a NA Rotary, but I'd guess there's some room in the Renesis for some more HP application?

4. Overall appearance, the RX-8 is something fresh I think. I've yet to see a body with curves and lines similiar to it, except for the rear, which is the only part I'm disappointed in :( . Oh well, I guess I can get used to it, I'm sure Stillen or some other companies will have some nice fabrications to get me past that. :)

Those reasons should do :).

I'm getting it because everyone else is getting it....... and no I would not jump off a 5 story building into a pool if everyone was doing it ;)

Seriously though, I'm getting it because I need something a little more practical (I refuse to get a "practical" vehicle) and I've always been fasinated by the rotary engine. The looks of the car are just amazing to me. Plus whatever car I get to replace my Miata has to be just as fun, or more so, driving up the twisty canyons here in northern Utah. The RX-8 suits every need I have plus some....

the interior of the car just does it for me... plus it beat out the g35 and svt cobra mustang in points in c&d.

anyone know the insurance difference between a wrx and rx-8? would help a lot in my decision between the two

I've spent the past two years looking for a car that inspired me to want it... Something more than just filling the role of transport. Something that stirred the soul to look at and to drive.

I went to auto shows, but the only cars that stood out to me were cars way out of the price range -- like the new porsche targa, or a bmw M3/M5...

The styling of the 8 struck me as soon as I saw it. The utility of 4 seats and 4 doors made it easy to justify because it was practical. The reported focus on driving dynamics (handling, braking, overall "feel") promises to deliver an inspirational ride.

And of all the cars I've looked at... This is the first in a while that speaks so much "I belong to you."

So that's why I'm buying it.

My reason's been stated.:D

Haha.. But seriously. I don't really know, the moment I placed myself in the driver's seat of this car I was like uhhhhhh... Man this feels good and the styling & design was really attractive. So I started to do more research on it and began to realize how unique this car was. I guess my reason would be because it's one of a kind and there's nothing out there like it yet.

The 83 RX-7 GSL was my first car and taught me how fun great driving dynamics could be, even without much horsepower. Working on that car with my dad, and following other rotary enthusisats, and driving one of each generation sold me on the idea behind Mazda's rotary sports cars. I thought it was awful when they killed the FD (even if I wasn't of driving age then), and I've been waiting since I saw the RX-Evolv. So when I saw the 8 at NAIAS in 02, it went to the top of my list.

Later on, the pragmatic part of my brain kicked in and that only helped the 8's case - good interior look, good junk catcher in the back with crazy access (freestyle what?), good powerplant with no forced induction (heard bad stories about FDs), good performance and reviews from the quasi-reliable media, and a decent quote from my insurance guy about rates.

How could I not choose the 8? ;) - I just hope there's not a monumental letdown on the test drive (this is hard to imagine - my last car was The Big Dark Park), or its back to the drawing boards.

Well for starters these are the cars that I've owned since I started driving 10 years ago. 79 RX-7, 88 5.0 Mustang, 88 RX-7 GXL, and I just sold my baby, a 93 VR RX-7. I want to own a new RX-7 in a few years and if the RX-7's future is pending on RX-8 sales then an RX-8 is going to be parked in my driveway.

oh I forgot to say why I am planning to get one...

rotary engines have great potential, its a good car to put money into and tune, good handling capabilities, rwd, can get a manual transmission car, looks awesome, xenon headlights, plain fun factor of this car is gunna rock! plus a turbo kit will be hopefully in the works which I will definately get :)

1. Friend in high school had a 1st gen RX-7, I loved it!

2. Total appreciation for the rotary, from an engineering point of view. This thing is amazing! Of course you all know that.

3. Have two kids, need room for them in back!

4. Saw the bright yellow RX-8 for the first time on the cover of R&T around April '02, instantly fell in love. Read the article and couldn't believe that it was only $30k. I knew then, I would own this car. (eyes swell with tears)

5. Four doors, but looks & HANDLES like a sports car. Mazda, you've nailed this one, you've got a winner on your hands!

6. Boost my 33 yr old ego, and make my peepee seem bigger than it really is! (just kiddin) :p

In a word -- Looks

At least, that is what 1st caught my attention.

Than came the RENESIS, and the committment of a few engineers to ensure its rise like a Phoenix.

A true 4-seater. More than a 2+2, and not the awful looks of most sedans.

Lastly, that there won't be many of them in the States for a while. I will truly have a looker, and something < 1/10th of 1% of the population will own anytime soon.

I'm going with Shoe!

Anyone that's owned the 3rd generation RX-7 knows the mystical power that permeates your soul for this breed of car!

I can't wait!

It's a Mazda rotary engined sports car! I owned an '83 RX-7, which I loved. I always wanted a 3rd gen RX-7, but couldn't afford it. There's nothing else out there in this price range that offers the superb combination of nimbleness & handling, smooth hi revving engine just made to wind up & fly, and exotic good looks. In fact, there's nothing else like it in any price range! In short, this car should be an inspirational joy to drive if you love sports cars. You folks that have never experienced Mazda handling combined with the turbine like rotary rush are in for a treat! I can't wait!

Because my 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo was just TOO FAST! I got a ticket a month ago at 112mph in a 35. Almost went to jail for Felony Evade. I told the cops that I had to know they were behind me before I could "evade" them. :) My insurance is now $6,000 per year. So, time to get something a little slower.

0-60 in 3.9 sec, 0-100 in 8.9 sec, 190 mph. Just too fast.

A great co-worker once told me. Two kind of cars you must own in your life time: a convertible and a rotary.

I have fulfilled the convertible by owning a '99 Miata. Now, I need a car that seats 4 for the family on the weekends and the RX-8 will be next on the list.

What I want to suggest is this:

"the only possible way the notion of happiness can be reclaimed from the machinery of manipulation and self-indulgence is to recast it as the possession of virtuous character and the performance of virtuous action"

I want to be able to say five years from now I had good judgement--it was a good project.

The seat problem with JSG requires more homework!!
