View Full Version : Question to all those 23 and younger
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 12:21 PM I'm not trying to discriminate here, I'm just curious about how you payed for your 8?
I would like to know specifically how you paid for it if your parents aren't helping :D.
I had am FB a while back, but it got destroyed by a Suburban:mad:. I now have a 98 Civic. I want to get rid of it.... Great car but it just had NO personality. Ok, done complaining. ON WITH THE ANSWERS!!!!!:D
Feras 11-05-2004, 12:24 PM ive been building my credit since i turned 18, so i had good credit but i never had a big purchase so they wouldnt let me sign at their low offering rate without a cosigner. I pay for my car with my job, i got a job after college and pays pretty damn nicely, and since i really have no big expenses (kids, mortgage, wife) i not only can pay for my 8 but build up my savings too.
Luftwaffle 11-05-2004, 12:28 PM I turn 23 next week, do I count?!
My dad is helping me because I'm borrowing his credit rating. I have to pay for everything else for the car myself though. I make payments, insurance, gas, maintenance, or whatever. The big thing that got me this car is not having to pay for rent since I live at home. :D
abbid 11-05-2004, 12:35 PM i am 19.
i worked at MCI for 1.3 years. made alot more than the average 30 year old with a career. bought an rx8, all with my saved money. Mci shutdown 60 days later.
Needless to say, i now have to work full time 40 hours a week, and go to school full time after work, in order to pay for my 8.
i pay everything that has to do with this rx8. as in lufts case, i used my parents credit rating, and no rent to afford an 8.
Genesis 11-05-2004, 12:40 PM I'm 13 and my girlfriend just kissed me today!
rx-cars_rock 11-05-2004, 12:58 PM I don't have an 8. I have something else which is pretty close to the same value. I put my savings towards the car and my dad payed for the rest. I'm spoiled.
Like Whoa 11-05-2004, 01:01 PM my dad bought it for me
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 01:07 PM Abbid and Luft
So where do you work now? I could afford the 8 if my parents didn't live in Dallas. :(
Genisis:
Not really the answer to my question but congrats anyway.... if you really are that young. :D
Jarred 11-05-2004, 01:08 PM I'm an animator, and make roughly 70k a year, so I bought it myself., my wife makes around 50k a year as a compositor.
just because someones young doesn't mean they didn't earn what their driving.:)
merlin00gt 11-05-2004, 01:09 PM I'm financing it myself. This is my third new financed car.
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 01:10 PM Jarred:
Have you animated anything that I would recognize?
I posted the question cause I wanted to find out who IS paying for what they are driving :p
Merlin:
One piece of advice, NEVER take your car to a mechanics called The Auto Shop. The owner is an @$$. (I used to work there) Its right next to 490 and plano parkway.

I also live with my parents for now, which helps a WHOLE LOT, but I bought the car myself. I've been building credit since I was legally able to, and somehow got a 780!! credit score, so I was able to swing 3.79% financing through my credit union at work. Having a nice salary (for being just out of school) also helps too :D, and I was able to get 7.5k selling my last car (an '00 civic).

Clean site!!! I like it. So are you just the company gofer or do you get to do fun stuff such as hardware/software/web design?
mysql101 11-05-2004, 01:16 PM The only thing I can suggest is ignore your parents if they think the best thing to do is buy a car in cash. Whatever you do, make sure you finance it. Put down as little or as much as needed to get the loan, but without a loan on your credit report, your credit isn't going to build. When I was younger, I was making 85k for 4 years and had no credit because I paid cash for everything. My mom convinced me to pay cash. It was only when I bought a new truck and paid 6k down that I started getting real credit cards and had a decent credit rating.
You don't need credit to get a car loan if you put down enough money that the bank feels secure that you're not going to default.

Meh, im the guniea pig, they stick me with all these MP3 players and make me test em. Poor me. i also do support.
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 01:18 PM Jason:
Exactly how young were you when you were making 85k (as in 85000, not 8500 right)?
Abbid:
At least you don't deal with GOVERNMENT END USERS..... on a side note - they really need to have a smiley that is shooting itself in the head. I don't think that there is a species of office worker that is more frustrating to help.

yeah seriously the credit score means nothing without substantial amounts of moneey financed (i had a 767 and still needed a cosigner)

I work as a data monkey for the NYC Office of the Actuary. I get about 37k a year. I graduated as an ECE, but the market for engineers isn't too great here in the city and I want to stay here, so I took whatever job I could get, which happened to be this one. I'm slowly becoming bitter and jaded by the general lack of intelligence of city bureaucracy. I have to get out of here and make more money so that I can turbocharge my 8 when it's available. :D
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 01:21 PM Luft: See previous reply :D. I'm working as a Co-Op in the IT dept for NE Ohio Reigonal Sewer District, but I'm going to school for my Mech E degree. Figures doesn't it?
Feras 11-05-2004, 01:23 PM i didnt hit quite what i wanted to either but i think i got close. Im a financial auditor for NASD (NASDAQ) and i got a degree in finance. Im doing a little more accounting than i ever wanted to do but still get to do lots of finance and stuff and the money is good too so i can overlook all that boring accounting.

I may be a bit confused here, but are you stating that animators aren't really paying for what their driving?
EDIT: Or you want to know what companies I've worked for ?
mysql101 11-05-2004, 01:26 PM Jason:
Exactly how young were you when you were making 85k (as in 85000, not 8500 right)?I was living in LA and AT&T contacted me about a position with them... in NJ. I quit college and went for it, I was 18-19 years old. After the first year I was making 55k, second year 70k, and then 85k by the third (approx numbers). At the fourth I was still making 85k, but would be declined for a credit cards when I applied. If I knew then what I know now, I'd not just assume I couldn't buy a house... I'd get myself into a house when they were running 180k for a 2600 sq home with pool that goes for 340k+ now.
You don't need credit to get credit, you just need enough cash to make them aware you're serious and not some poor jackass who's going to default on the loan.

I feel for you man, I really do. I have absolutely no actuarial experience, yet they let me do this job. Unfortunately, since I'm not a complete retard with computers, I also have to help the users when they can't read what it says on the screen. Seriously, it says, Old Password, New Password, Repeat New Password. What's so freaking hard about that?! Oh yeah, and the fact that I'm young overrules the fact that I'm weaksauce and therefore requires me to do all heavy lifting and water bottle replacement in the office. I swear, I'm going to go crazy one day and start throwing cases into the shredder.
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 01:50 PM Jarred:
Sorry for the confusion. To Clarify: I wanted to know what other people around my age are doing to pay for their wonderful 8s unassisted by parents. In no way was I implying that animaters do not pay for what they drive. I also wanted to know if you have done animation in any famous games/movies/tv etc that a common media addict like me would recognize.
Jason: To quote my homey (in the whitest white boy tone possible) "Mad Props man". Sounds like it was a sweet gig. My mom used to work in the R&D dept at Worldcom in Richardson, TX. They were gonna give me an intership but then pfffft no more Worldcom.
Luft:
I get the same treatment around the office, I'm just glad I'm not the one out cleaning the sewers. :D Also, are you a guy or a girl?
Luftwaffle 11-05-2004, 01:58 PM I'm a guy... who likes cute things... :D

My mom used to work in the R&D dept at Worldcom in Richardson, TX. They were gonna give me an intership but then pfffft no more Worldcom. It was great while it lasted. Unfortunately it was a unique position and I was uniquely qualified. I bet there are no more than 6 job positions like it available in the world.
When AT&T needed to cut back, my entire department was let go. I was out of work for over a year. It was rough.
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 02:09 PM Luft: You are the first guy that I have spoken with that will admit to liking Hello Kitty. Nice to know ya. :D I have to say I was a little confused by your Avatar.
Jason: Its still rough in the Telecom/IT industry. :( I have a friend with a Double MASTERS degree in CS and Business Manegement that is only making 35K. And he is glad just to not be doing research as a lab assistant anymore.
abbid 11-05-2004, 02:16 PM rice: who the hell are you? :D
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 02:21 PM My profile says it all... starving college student with RX-8 owner envy. I also like the personality of the forum so (with much deliberation) I decided to crash. :D Also, my sn is a play on my last name. Rice (cause thats the kind of car that I have Honda Civic with no mods that thinks it has a V8) and Cookie (My old HS football nickname) I also have a smattering of different work experience and educational background ranging from an Autoshop to Petsmart to my current employment. And my education is anywhere in between AI and Mechanical engineering. Does that sum it up enough or would you like to know more? :D

ricecookie 11-05-2004, 02:34 PM Oh - One last thing - Dilbert is my Avatar cause I live in that comic strip... at least it feels like it..... well only if you add the extra layers of management from office space .:D:(
im 19, first car was a honda accord 1988(stick). 2nd car was mazda mx-6(stick) .3rd car was my Honda Prelude 1998 (stick). oh i miss her. Im now waiting on my rx-8 :D I started to work as a computer salesman at fry's (crapiest place to work) once i got out of high school. i was making around $3,500 a month there... while there i started to fund my own business. www.encoi.com :) site is being made as we speak. We do Consultation, manage networks, build networks, web design, and stuff.... also the other business which are not listed on the llc yet. I quit fry's and now i work for myself! :D
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 03:12 PM Desh -
Congrats on the business. Hope it goes well for you. I'll second the "it sucks working as a computer salesman".
P.S.
Need any help w/ your business? :D
VelociRedBeast 11-05-2004, 03:33 PM My dad bought it for me when my parent's were getting a divorce so I'd go live with him but now my parents are back together and I still have the 8. Plus I get really good grades in school and I'll have enough money one day to pay him back which I plan to do.
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 03:42 PM Veloci -
I both envy and feel sorry for you. Divorce sucks, Bribery is underhanded, but MAN do I love the 8.
devoid 11-05-2004, 03:52 PM I have a job. I put a downpayment on the car, and financed the remainder, and the entire cost of my modifications are out of pocket.
Now...the real question...how old do you think I am?
(Hint: Check the about section on my website http://devoid.mine.nu )
PS - Ricecookie: I'm in Cleveland too...though not unfortunately! :D
Feras 11-05-2004, 03:53 PM Oh - One last thing - Dilbert is my Avatar cause I live in that comic strip... at least it feels like it..... well only if you add the extra layers of management from office space .:D:(
btw i posted all over the first page of this thread :)
Soundave 11-05-2004, 03:57 PM Working full time and have a credit score of 730. Financing wasn't a problem.
ricecookie 11-05-2004, 04:00 PM devoid - Either you are an incredibly smart and motivated 20 year old, or you are around 26. :D Nice website, original mods to your car.
MazdaSpeed -
I was only teasing you in that other thread, and i was refering to the fact that you knew about my experience without responding AFTERWARDS :D
Soundave - Not Bad. :)
mysql101 11-05-2004, 04:07 PM Devoid is 23 - 24. He got his BS degree in 2002. I figure 1998 he was 17-18 when he started college.
Icemastr 11-05-2004, 04:14 PM You don't need credit to get credit, you just need enough cash to make them aware you're serious and not some poor jackass who's going to default on the loan.
This is not quite true.
You are correct that you don't need credit to get credit, however if you are going to get credit without a cosigner than you will be limited to high interest credit cards (usually secured cards, or $100-$200 department store cards) and high interest auto loans requiring a significant down payment and limited buying power (i.e. only being limited to financing less than $7,500-10,000$)
Even if you put 15,000$ down on a new RX-8 that doesnt all of a sudden give you 4% interest on the rest of the loan. Thats why building good credit is so important so you have the buying power to buy things if you need to. Down payment and cosigners don't change your credit, they are just required if you have no or poor credit to get financing with very high interest rates and loan limits.
How do I afford my cars at 20? I am the manager for a car dealership so I get to drive what I want for free :D
mysql101 11-05-2004, 04:22 PM You are correct that you don't need credit to get credit, however if you are going to get credit without a cosigner than you will be limited to high interest credit cards (usually secured cards, or $100-$200 department store cards) and high interest auto loans requiring a significant down payment and limited buying power (i.e. only being limited to financing less than $7,500-10,000$)
Even if you put 15,000$ down on a new RX-8 that doesnt all of a sudden give you 4% interest on the rest of the loan. Well, lets see... I put down $6,000 cash, and financed the rest of the Dodge Dakota Quad cab (I think around $23,000). I got a 7.5%ish interest rate. Not great, but once you make payments on it for 6 months or so, you'll start getting credit cards out the wazoo. I had a half dozen cards with more than $8,000 limits and they had rates around 6% on them. I always paid my cards off in full each month.
So while your initial car loan may not be at a great rate, if you pay it properly, your credit will be good enough to get great rates for everything else shortly after.

Well, Jason is right. Doing the math...figuring my HS and College years, I am 23. I finished my 4yr BS in 3 yr 1/4 and my MBA in 1 year immediately following. So as for ricecookie...yeah, I'm motivated...I wanted to finish college early.

Japan8 11-08-2004, 12:58 AM I'm over 23 and I don't have an 8 yet. Does this mean I shouldn't post? :D
Under 23... jeez... talk about making someone feel old...
i bought my 8 when i was 23..
i have had good credit since i was 17. I financed it based on how much I make a year. I got my BS in 2002.
Oh.. and i live in dallas.
Morgan 11-08-2004, 01:53 AM worked my ass off and once i get a new job it shall continue..i got it when i was 17, but i am slowly paying for it *400 a month*
ricecookie 11-08-2004, 07:16 AM Japan8 - As previously stated is this thread, I'm not trying to dicriminate against people that are over 23, I just want poeple with experience that are around my age. :D
Ajax - Good job. :D Where did you get your degree from? UTD (Just guessing since you live in Dallas and drive a nice car)?
Morgan - So what are you doing during the interim to pay for your 8? (cute avatar btw)
