Why do people say "I could care less" when they really mean "I couldn't care less"? Doesn't it ever dawn on them that they are saying the opposite of what they mean?

Could you care less?

I was told by an English professor that "I couln't care less" was a double negative, but it always sounded more accurate to me. Any English teachers out there?

The saying is "I couldn't care less."

How is that a double negative? Your English professor was a quack, I wouldn't believe anything he told you. :p

The reasoning behind "I couldn't care less" is that you don't care at all. You are basically saying that you care so little that you couldn't care about it any less. Saying that you "could care less" means that you are caring a little bit more than not caring. I'm not an English major, I was taught this back in high school by a crazed Grammar teacher.

I actually wish I could care less about this blatant misuse of the English language, but it really bugs me. I couldn't care less if that's the way you've always said it -- "I could care less" is wrong!

Sure I could. If I cared a bit, then "I could care less" - right?

Don't get me started. English isn't even my first language and stuff like that drives me batty. I couldn't care more!:p
