Well, this was going to happen sooner or later. Not a really big surprise. The shocker came when she ditched her band...that was low. Read it here (http://www.popdirt.com/article33879.html) . Or view the "performance" here (http://content.collegehumor.com/news/ashlee_snl.wmv) . Pathetic. :(

She's riding on her sister's talent anyways. Although she isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, at least Jessica can sing.

is it so hard to sing a song you have sang before? so what if there are mistakes or you're out of breath with some of the dancing? that just adds to the live performance.

How can you blame your BAND.. when it was your lipsyncing TAPE that messed up?! :D :D

I actually saw this occur (while watching one of the worst SNLs EVER). I was getting up to go get another beverage and realized immediately that this was the SAME SONG. Eclypse and I looked at each other like "am I that intoxicated, or is this the same song again?!"
Accidents happen, but to be a hypocrite (she was against lipsyncing in that interniew) and THEN blame someone else = not cool.
Funny to watch her go down in flames for being an asshat. :D

She might have blamed the band as part of the cover up. Apparently in the version broadcast to the West coast the SNL crew cut the sound out for the part where the taped singing started. So it just looked like she was confused by what the band was playing. Unfortunately everyone's sharing the uncut version of the song and the real story is all over the papers. But apparently some people who saw the West Coast version said that her explanation made a lot of sense and that they didn't know that the vocal track was playing at all.

I kinda feel bad for her, but then again, I already knew she couldn't really sing. I've seen her show twice. The first time, hell I could easily sing better than her. The second time, she wasn't bad, but she sure wasn't great. Editing and studio tricks really helps make someone sound decent. Blink 182 sounds decent on their albums but having heard them live once... they're horrible singers. But at least because of that you know for sure they're singing live.

Depends on the concert venue, I've been to at least 5 different Blink182 concerts, sometimes they sound great, sometimes they sound blah. The thing with rock bands is they go off tangent and sing something totally different.

Some bands that I've heard live, went off track, and sounded great were... No Doubt, Fleetwood Mac, The Corrs, U2, The Smiths, Aquabats, Green Day, and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies.

can't feel sorry for this piece of crap, maybe if she was honest and really singing etc. but when your one of the talentless teen slut wannabe bad girls like her and you make money off of it you should get what you deserve, all these worthless no talent having lip syncing pieces of crap need to go take some lessons (singing, not dancing, yeesh, we all know you can jump around half naked already) and try and redeem themselves somehow

I felt like I had acid reflux when I viewed the video of her performance (or lack thereof). First she tried to blame her band, now Daddy's covering for her. At least her band had enough decency to go on with the show, even after she ran off stage.

SNL used to be good. Like 20 years ago. The last 4 or 5 years have been especially horrible. Every so often, I watch it anyway. I watched this one. I am so sorry I did. I mean the chick doesn't even have to open her mouth for you to know she has no talent. When she does, she removes all doubt. Why do idiots like this make it so far up the food chain? There is something wrong with the entertainment industry that allows dreck like this to take up valuable airwaves.

"Video Killed the Radio Star."

In today's music scene, there is no place for female singers who aren't atractive. The female pioneers of rock looked like pioneers alright. They weren't beautiful; they sounded beautiful. There is no place for female singers who aren't gorgeous in today's "music" industry.

This is about the best picture I could find of Chris Hynde of the Pretenders.

http://www.pretendersarchives.com/Gallery/Gal-CHPost.jpg

And here's the worst:

http://www.pretendersarchives.com/Gallery/Gal-CH4.jpg

Face it; she's ugly by today's standards and thus wouldn't have a chance. (BTW, I have few Pretenders recordings - no Ashlee Simpson CDs).

I think it is women (or I should say girls) who demand that female singers be attractive as much or more than men do. It is a big insult to tell a performer, "You have a face for radio." To me it is a bigger insult to say, "You have a voice for video."

There were plenty of hotties amongst the women pioneers of rock and their looks were a part of thier success, especially with the male fans. The difference was they had to sell the labels on their voices before they even got seen by anyone. Today, it is the other way around.

She could have played the situation so differently and no one would have known a thing. When the music started, Ashlee and her band looked around confused. She should have just acted like it was a spoof. She could have gotten on the mic and asked for the music to stop and then made some quick remark about how they were trying to make her look fake. She could have just run with it and made it appear that it was a part of an SNL skit. Instead she danced her strange little jig and left so we all knew that she messed up. It could have worked out so differently but she didn't think fast enough. To make it worse there has already been more than 1 story about what happened. Now we know her first performance was fake. Who knows about her concerts. Then again Britney, Christina, Madonna, and others all lipsync at their concerts so why can't she? The bands fault? Acid reflux? What's next, are they going to tell us that it hurts when she craps and that it affects her voice? Just be honest.

She's a no-talent hack that was made into a star by MTV before she was anybody. Heck, they gave her her own reality TV show before she had released ONE song. Just another manufactured artist that has no talent whatsoever.

I hope she crashes and burns on this one.

Edit: It appears her official website is down....I only assume it is because they caught on to all the remarks in the forum, which is a shame, since I would have LOVED to read them.

I saw her in an interview a few months back, the one where she claimed she was nothing like Jessica and that she was more like Punk music and not R&B like Jessica, etc...or how her hair is black and not blonde along with all the other contrasts they've tried to separate the two with. Then in her first video she's wearing a shirt that says "Punk". What a bunch of crap, Social Distortion, The Sex Pistols and all the others must be pissed as hell to have this idiot claim to be a part of their culture.

This all just makes me have so much more respect for the acts like Norah Jones or Dido, who I gather perform very well live and can actually play instruments and write harmonic lyrics.

The cult of celebrity rewards no talent hacks - male and female. Women just have an easier time reaching the 9 - 14 yr old demographic. I dunno. I kind of give up. Way i figure it it's kind of like that old saying - "democracy - where idiots get the government they deserve"...after all - 100,000's of people are buying this shit. Reap what we so...and so forth...

MrWigggles

Mazda Maniac,

I think you missed my point.

Yes, there were hotties back in the day, but there were definitely a lot of notties too. For a female singer talent can't overcome poor appearance today. Someone like Janis Joplin wouldn't even exist. The sad thing is I think a lot of talented young women want to be a star but feel that their appearance is lacking and thus they are doomed before they ever get started. Image is much much more important now than actual musical talent.

The whole things reminds me of a Beavis and Butthead episode when they were watching a Vanessa Williams video where she was wearing a conservative buttoned up blouse. Butthead said something like: "If this chick would show a little more skin, I might actually buy her CD." As stupid as that logic is, I think it is true.

What gets me about SNL is it was so obvious that Britney Spears was lip syncing a couple years. She danced around the whole time the music was playing while "singing" it perfectly like a studio recording. Then at the end, you could tell they turned her mic back on because she thanked the crowd in a different tone of voice while she was breathing heavilly into the mic. Pitiful.

-Mr. Wigggles

Ps. Rotarygod, your plan would have worked if her mic was actually on, it might not have been. Don't forget she did the same song earlier perfectly. She would had to sing the coming sound in a different voice.

To play Devil's Advocate to this...how much is this the father pushing her to do these things? Or the simple pressure of being so overshadowed by your older sister? I believe she's still a minor, so how does that changer her situation? If we were in a similar situation to Ashlee, would most of us not have gone for it all like her? Hard to judge her intentions within how this all got started, but it sure is easy as the public to find hate and point the finger.

MrWigggles

Red Devil,

I think the problem is so many stars lip sync that there is no room for a bad performance.

Pavoratti got caught lip syncing at a concert once. The difference with rock is that if your voice isn't 100%, a hoarse voice should be a still acceptable if the person can sing in the first place. There is so much studio magic going on with recordings that she would probably have to be a 100% to give even a decent live performance.

-Mr. Wigggles

I agree with the problem of deceiving the public, and that it is wrong to create these icons that simply are not as they appear.

I'm simply questioning in Ashlee's case, how much is it really her doing and initiative vs. outside factors that jade her judgment. And along those lines, how many of us at that impressionable age would also follow the same road she's taken? She is obviously immature, we can see that just from blaming her band.

pretty much. i think that music production these days has given us some interesting music, and even a few good songs, but it creates stuff that is almost literally unperformable (especially with all the emphasis on vocal alteration for radio songs).

but to me, even with ashlee's polished up radio songs, i still hate the way she sings (never mind the horrible horrible songs someone has written and arranged for her).

The best part about the Gimmie Gimmies is that they're totally hammered out of their minds while they play and can still manage to keep it together. :D

this is why the story is funny.

Ashlee Simpson on lip syncing, from Lucky Magazine interview:

"LM: What are your takes on lip-synching?

AS: I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going out to let my real talent show, not to just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me."
