View Full Version : Where to start with performance upgrades?
john_martin 10-23-2004, 01:51 PM Can someone help me,
I have a stock 2004 RX-8. Im about to start putting money into it to make it faster but dont really know where to start. Im kind of a tight wad and want to get the most bang for my buck, eventhough price doesnt matter to me as long get good gains. To me the stock RX-8 is one bad ass car, I just want it to be one bad rice roket. Please help
epitrochoid 10-23-2004, 02:35 PM first figure out what you want to do...
look good? sound good? handle good? accelerate quickly?
you probably want all of those..the ICE is your own call. theres some cool things you can do with the NAV system if you have it or throw subwoofers in the back.
if you want to up the performance, personally i'd go with the suspension first. good set of sway bars will make a big difference as will coilovers. then maybe wheels/tires. really there isn't much for this motor right now thats going to make you feel a difference in power, it's pretty maxed out. i put exhaust on pretty much for the sound, the power gains are negligble. so just put your cash into marketable securities and save for FI in a few months.
oh yeah, parts arent cheap for this car. and dont buy anything off ebay.
Fanman 10-23-2004, 04:36 PM Straightline peroformance you really only have two things that will give you good gains for cheap. Nitrous & lightweight flywheel. There are other performance adders such as cat back, hi-flow cat, air intake, ECU re-programming but they are not cheap, and especially for the ECU re-programming results have been all over the place with that. You can get about 6 hp with a midpipe (removing the cat & resonator), but you may want to keep the stock exhaust as it is really loud. You can get that for like $200.
RXE16T 10-24-2004, 04:40 AM IMO the best mod you can do first is to fit a catback exhaust.
It adds a tougher note to the 8's somewhat wimpy sound, replaces the standard pea shooter tips and will give you a slight power increase (debatable).

HUGE carbon fibre GT wing should be the first mod then. LOL :)
john_martin 10-24-2004, 08:21 AM Thanks guys,
Im probly gonna go with the coil overs and sway bars now but when do yall expect the FI to come out, and who will have the best one and how much will it cost?
Razz1 10-25-2004, 10:39 PM Racing Beat
1000 for springs
550 for exhaust

RXice Rocket 8? How about a carbon fibre hood with fake scoop and massive body stickers... N O S !
Fanman 10-26-2004, 12:37 AM Racing Beat
1000 for springs
550 for exhaust
I think Razz has a typo. The whole Racing Beat suspension package only costs $516 on the RB website. Add the Front Sway Bar Endlinks and you are still looking at $600.
Wankeler 10-27-2004, 08:49 AM Uh-oh. I am thinking about the fiber hood and engine cover. Will I be an official "ricer" if I actually get them? I would hate to upset the sensibilities of others on this forum.
Charles
LOL Charles!
Only if you didn't actually have the NO2 to go with it!
Plus your other mods (functional) would probably prevent the "ricer" tag from being placed on you.
Zaku-8 10-27-2004, 07:35 PM such haters on this forum. When did the definition of rice get generalized to any mod done by the street import crowd? All types of people put in carbon fiber dashkits, switch kits, etc. because it makes it look better. Is a soccer mom Chevy Tahoe with carbon fiber in the interior a "ricer"?
I only say this because some of the mods are actually worthwhile. Huge wings may look odd on the street, and may be useless on the street, but they will cut laptimes and what else matters? Rice means the totally useless and bare ass 'mods' like coffee can exhausts, saran wrapped headlights, Honda badges on a Toyota, etc. But generalizing rice puts an unnecessary stigma on things that people would otherwise want to buy.
This is like when people call racing stripes rice.

Nicely said.. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Aoshi Shinomori 10-28-2004, 02:32 AM Who really cares what other people think of the way you dress up your car? If you put something on your car, it usually means you like it. If you happen to like carbon fiber accessories, the more power to you. I don't really love the "fart can" muffler, but some people do, leave them be. This is all rather silly in my opinion.
