I searched and don't recall seeing this anywhere. If this is old news I will delete the thread. I discovered that if in first gear and you let off the clutch and gas the car will cruise at 4-5 MPH by itself. Perfect for traffic.
Anyone else ?

 

What kind of traffic? Bumper to Bumper rush hour type? That sucks, but I think I will try this on Friday to see if I can do it also.

Does the car lurch forward with each RPM or is it smooth?

 

Smooth and steady cruising - like an AT. One day I was pissed at the Bay Area traffic and trying to cruise at low speeds 1-10 MPH . I just let off the clutch and gas in first and it did not stall- thats how I found it out...

 

It should be smooth..as the PCM constantly tries to correct the RPM.

 

I'm curious to see if anyone else already knew about this...... =)

I've noticed it... I often leave it in 1st while in slow moving traffic (5-20mph), and if I'm smooth with the throttle modulation, it's very handy. Too much on the throttle while 'coasting in gear' and it's jerksville.

It should, there is no reason any MT car shouldn't do it, the car will just try to idle at its idle rpm, and whatever speed that corresponds to in 1st, thats the speed it should idle at. If you're on any sort of incline, though, it may not be possible.

 

...noticed at how "fast" our cars go by themselves in reverse? When I back out of my parent's house, my car backs out and goes up a hill with no gas pedal input at all.

It's the samll stuff like this that helps make the car cool, ya' know?

the VW TDI I had would go about 25 from idle if you shifted through each gear with no throttle input. However, it took a minute or two and if you were in traffic you'd irritate just a person or two before they ran you over. But the engine could pull 5th at idle. That's real torque.

 

I thought all cars did this.

It works in 2nd too.. You go about 7 or 8 miles an hour.

My old '78 Celica would stall... but I think most modern computer controlled, fuel injected cars can probably handle it.

 

As I recall, this has been pretty much standard bahavior for any MT vehicle I've had...

 

This has been discussed in numerous threads related to mt for newbies. A lot of the newbies thought that they had to ride the clutch to keep revs up where they felt comfortable.

cgrx, if it makes you feel any better, this is probably the first thread to make this the primary subject.

 

Uhm.. not in my car..
In my car, if I let off the clutch from a standstill completely, i'll lurch and stall.
If i slowly let off the clutch i can get moving but if i start to decellerate at all, it'll start to get jerky and eventually stall. Same with second.
