Well, Our ShadowrunMUSH meet was in Chicago back in '95 (i think)

We had 15 people show up.. Good turnout for back then. People from as far away as Puerto Rico and NYC, I was in N.O. myself.

well we're all still trying to make all this out...it started as a small gethering of guy, simplyblue, meow, and kari but has all of a sudden turned into a full blown meet...the only other person in chicago i know of is D Menac 7 so yea, there's a lot of planning still involved, Morgan, but no one is going to leave you at O'Hare!

Yeah, 93rdcurrent was talking about a west meets east meet that should be planned sometime. Then awhile ago simplyblue and I were talking about going to chicago to rain on B's parade. :D So then we (more like simplyblue) initiated a plan of meet between us 2 including guy and meowloud to party down in B's place. Then guy came up with the plan that since we're doing that, it'd be fun to add the forum into the mix and make it the east meets west meet and meet there in Chicago since we'll be there already and it seems to be centered enough. :)

This may be east meets west but it is still up north. What about the south? A more central location like Oklahoma City or as far north as Witchita, Kansas makes more sense. Although I don't think there's anything to do in Witchita!

I'll pick up morgan! BTW there is tons of stuff to do in Chicago. Millenium Park, Museums, Lake Michigan, LSD(Lake Shore Drive), the best pizza you will ever eat, Water Tower, Sears Tower, Buckingham Fountain, and Gingerman Raceway is only a few hours from the city(in Michigan)

It's this PS2 game where you roll stuff up into balls. The King of All Cosmos accidentally destroys all the stars in the sky. So you as the Dashing Prince have to help restore the stars by rolling up items on earth into your katamari for your dad to place back into the heavens as stars. You start off with this little ball and you roll it over thumbtacks, paper clips, grapes, etc. Before you know it, you're picking up pens, batteries, mice and tangerines. It just keeps going, soon you start rolling up people and cars and trees into this huge ball of stuff. It's really, really weird, but totally fun. Music is good too.

There is no frickin way I'm driving to Chicago! I think a trip taking 12 hours one way should be done only once in a year and I'd prefer saving that for DT (unless I can hitch a ride :D). Plus I like the idea of BRx8 being our chauffeur in Chicago :D

I'd like to profit off this endeavor in some way. So seeing that I usually go home to Florida on Memorial Day weekend, I may consider auctioning off my apartment for that weekend. It's a small one bedroom on State St. on the 54th floor overlooking the lake and Oak Street Beach. And depending on the bid, the lucky winner may find a fridge stocked with two cases of beer - only implied guarantees on that, though. Oh, usage of my 8 would cost extra, unless it's a hot girl like Morgan.

My suggestion to you would also be to find a relatively nice hotel near some of Chicago activities, with a place which could host a group dinner (main event). Then convince one or two of the others to help with the planning and delegate some responsibilities their way.

Then you start listing facets of your event.....will you have t-shirts? (Chicago Underground,,,,cool)......dinner?......night out?.....group dinner cruise would be cool........maps......lists with attendees phone numbers.....a Saturday outing? Zoo? A Sunday outing? Sponsors? Doorprizes? Gift Certificates?

Try to keep everyone at the same motel, witin walking distance of at least one or two attractions or sections. (Maybe Chinatown)

Just suggestions....GOOD LUCK!!

Michigan Ave is pretty nice to just visit and not even buy anything...it has a huge FAO Schwartz, Nike Town with indoor basketball court so you can try out your skids before you buy them, and Oprah's house...i wonder if we can crash Oprah's house and ask for free cars

Sounds like this is going to be a blast... very cool to see all the interest. There's so much cool stuff to do downtown- we spend about one weekend a month down doing a museum, Navy Pier (I love the live music at the beer garden), Gino's East or Ed Debevics, etc.

So, back to the topic at hand. Did anyone have any ideas on where to book rooms? I like the Palmer House Hilton, and it's right downtown I believe.. But It is sort of pricey.. Like $175 - $200 (suite).

The attitude we received was, "No...you don't need your own group. You'll join ours or we'll come over on the RX-8 board and FLAME your efforts." Which is exactly what happened.


We either join your activities or get flamed for organizing our own.

Well, I would say that I do. The reason is that you and I never converse on here. The last time we talked to eachother in a thread you had also made the same type of comments. That was also the first time we'd ever communicated. I shrugged it off as a joke and even made some jokes about it myself.

You normally don't post very much. Since then, one of the few things I saw you post was when you said we 8 owners need to lighten up. Then, today I see all this pessimism as well as another jab at me being an attention whore.

To my knowledge, no one else besides RXGR8 has done so. Given that RXGR8 and I have exchanged posts in forum, talked in chat, and talked on the phone, I know that RXGR8 jokes alot. I never converse with you, so when I see such negative comments about myself and other 8 owners, I can only assume they are serious, and yes, I do have a problem with that.

I'm ready to put this behind us as Id rather not discuss this in open forum anymore. However, I invite you to PM me if you wish.

My bad for not realizing you did invite the 7 guys, I guess it was their loss. The event looked like fun, and I've personally driven that road before, it is incredible!

You guys are the only ones getting bent out of shape, my only goal for the past 15 years has been to bring everyone together. Which is why elitist attitudes are not appreciated by me personally. The FD owners were guilty of it for a long long time which only worked to segment the community, since then the general owner demographic has changed, and so has their attitude. Now, it's coming from here. Most 8 owners are cool, but as I've told the RX-8 guys at local events, our strength is in numbers, there aren't enough of us to keep dividing in into separate little groups. Plus, you all stand a lot to learn by hanging out with the 7 owners, because we've been there, done that. Appreciate our knowledge, and we'll appreciate your desire to learn.

It's just human nature, human behavior. The difference is I don't judge, the same guys that act immature on the board can be a great bunch of people to hang out with. I think you're confusing elitist with non-conformist. How is it elitist when EVERYONE has been invited to every function we've ever put together? Some people don't like to be controlled. They like to do their own, personalized thing and not be swallowed up by the grandness of an organized, sanctioned event.

I'm not trying to take away from anything you have done or accomplished. This forum is an awesome place to meet, converse and share bits and pieces of life, both car-related and other. It's easy to control a forum, but more difficult to control people. People reject herding. It's a characteristic which separates us from cattle.....um....except in guys321's case. :D

If your words were true about this being a labor of love, and that you're more of an enthusiast than a profiteer, people will continue to come here...and they'll continue to give business to the vendors who sponsor this site. I plan on buying some clear sides from one of them today and an exhaust in the very near future.

I personally have a love affair with the 7 and that is the original reason that I got an 8. I don't really know anyone from the 7 forum because I am not a member of the 7 forum, therefore I would rather meet with people that I do know. I will make some 7club events in the future, but those people are not who I converse with on the forum everyday. I wouldn't enjoy a meet with the 7 club as much because I am shy and would be uncomfortable around a large group of people that I don't know at all. I was headed to Chicago around that time too so I figured I could push the trip back two weeks.

Here's the bottom line, those events that get their own sections have proven their capability to host and organize a successful car/social event. If this thing is really going to happen, you still have a lot to prove. Idle chit chat in the Lounge means nothing. If you want a sticky as a way of promoting the event, it'll have to appear a lot more serious first. Right now it's just a handful of loungers BS'ing - no offense. And whether you like being part of an organized event or not, that's the only ones we can officially support with Stickies and subforums ... we have to weed out the posers.

The idea to have a meet where the east coast and west coast users could attend was brought up by 93rdcurrent several months back. And since some of the members here were talking about meeting up in Chicago, then I felt it would be nice to invite other members, like 93rdcurrent who would also enjoy meeting people from across the country.

We didn't wake up one day and say.. "Oh wow! There's a mid-west meet. Let's make our own so we can spite them! Yeah! That sounds like FUN!"

Personally, I've been to Indy. I like Chicago better. :D

Ditto on that. I've never seen or heard of an east meets west meet on here aside from the one we're talking about. And even if there was, I probably wouldn't want to attend for the very reasons that Raz has stated. I've already been to sevenstock and it was awesome. BUT I don't want to go to another "organized" event. This event we're planning now is something we're doing on our own to meet other forum members on a more friendly and personal level. To be able to do *other* things aside from looking at cars all day long. But like Raz says, we really don't need help or a sticky. Threads will work just fine in addition to Raz's site. :)

It's not trying to be a sevenstock or midwest rotor rally or rotary revolution. some of the folks here met up at 7stock and had a great time getting to know each other a little. some of the folks went to dragontail and had the same kind of great time. everyone said "oh i wish we could have all met". they/we aren't in the " let's have a rotary car meet" state of mind. there are already events for that that many of these same people have already attended. this is about our "club" actually getting to meet each other and have a good time doing it. anybody that has joined this club is welcome to come whether the have a 7 a repu or no rotary vehicle at all. if they ever visit this club and want to get to know this cast of characters they're invited. no one is trying to compete with any established rotary meet nor are they ignoring it. no one is try to be elitist and "have their own show" it's more like a family re=union where all the cousins show up and meet for the first time. :)

The point is why try and organize a mid-west meet when there already is a very successful and established one. The only reason would be so that you could call it yours.

i hope you understand that we didn't "try and organize" a meet, this thing just all of a sudden came up...what started out as 4 or 5 of us just wanting to meet each other was posted on the General Discussion page and a lot of people showed interest, mostly Loungers that we converse with everyday...this wasn't as an attempt to undermine yours or anyone else's control, in fact the only reason why i think you brought that up is simply because YOU feel that this gethering is an attempt to undermine yours or anyone else's control over it...

what you fail to realize is that this isn't about cars and we aren't getting any sponsors or whatnot...this has nothing to do about rotary engines or 7's or 8's...this all has to do with people we "hang out" with everyday here on the forum shooting the shit doing events that have absolutely nothing to do with cars...the only difference here is that we're hanging out in real life and we'd appreciate it even if you came and hung out with us...everyone is invited, once we're done tallying what everyone wants to do, we'll get a schedule up, you pick what you want to do, where you want to stay, and we all meet up at the appointed place/time...how hard is that? for people that want to hang out at the bars with us, so be it...for people that don't, i'm sure they can find other members to hang out with that night and cruise downtown Chicago...

as you can see, not one person is organizing this event, it's a group effort and we're asking everyone to get involved and throw in ideas on what to do and where to go, etc....what's to say they're not going to make it to your Rotary Revolution anyway? these two things have nothing to do with each other...

I have just read this thread from start... to finish... at work... hiding from my Lieutenant... waiting for lunch... hungry as hell... occasionally shaking my fist at the monitor... laughing... and pouting!

I would just like to say... I am coming to this meet, regardless to whether it's officially sanctioned/sponsored/organized or not! This is probably my first time getting involved in any thread in the lounge (I'm not a lounge type of guy), but I promise, you will see more of me!

Anyway, as I was saying, I have made up my mind, based upon the happenings in this thread, I will BE in Chi-Town Memorial day weekend, to HAVE SOME FUN WITH PEOPLE I CAN PERCEPTIBLY RELATE WITH! Not to look at cars all day, (though I would like to take some pics and peeks), not to race my car against other eight owners, (though I do like the more than occasional adrenaline rush), and not to try to decide which is better/OBSOLETE, the 7 or the 8! (Loving Jab;))

Reasons I'd like to go:

My birthday is May 17! (So... I can spend quality, respectable time w/my family on that day, and get extra plastered/slizzard for memorial day weekend:D)

I've been to Chicago, for less than a day, 2x (one more reason to stay over night)

I love model Railroads, (the exhibit at the Museum BLEW MY MIND, a perfect excuse to leave home, spend some money, and see it again)

For some odd reason I just love driving under the entire length of the L Downtown!

My best friend's, twin sister moved to Chicago a couple of years back, and is, if I recall correctly, a big wig at the Renaissance hotel, so I MAY be able to pull some strings for the group!

I have only met one other 8 owner, very briefly: in person, in my home town, while driving! (I have got to meet some of you guys/gals!)

I think I may be the "token" 8 owner! (yes, that is a satirical jab at a reference in a post made earlier on this thread, to prove that jokes are like traffic on a six lane highway... Everyone is fine until someone loses control, then it can be downright ugly... So PLEASE, be careful... and watch your blind spots!;))

So in summation, post the list of potential attendees, and add me to it!

This event is for the members regardless of our cars, as another member put it, and it is for us to meet each other. I think it's going to be fun and I'm sorry that the 8 forum is so unsupportive of its' members... You should be encouraging us to do more events and get more established since it's good advertising for you and your paid vendors. Trying to piss on our parade is doing the opposite and anyone with the least bit of marketing wisdom would know that. Suggestion:

Once you've figured out which hotel you'll be using, call ahead and find out what their Memorial Day activity is like. Is that peak or off season? Once you've determined number of attendees, ask for a group discount and block of rooms. Enough notice and they can arrange rooms together along the same corridor. Don't forget a place for the banquet. Also keep in mind that if you share rooms, you'll cut your individual lodging in half. Four to a room and you'll quarter it. :D
