Washing my car today I found a smallish glob of red stuff on my hood. No idea what it could be or where it came from. The closest thing it resembles is a small glob of dark red paint. I began to scrub it with my soapy wash cloth and some of it came off but some of it spread and won't come off with my soapy cloth.
There is also some crap on the bottom of my front fender that looks like black paint.
My dad recommended using mineral spirits or paint thinner. Will this do more harm than good?
If so what would get this stuff off? Thanks.

use a clay bar and go gently to remove the spot. It should come up with some quick detailer and a clay bar...

Quik Detailer made by Meguiars, the best stuff out there for quick details, you just shake it up, spray it on, and wipe it off, I use it all the time, but I would suggest getting some microfiber towels to wipe it off with, just be careful to get it all off, not good to let it dry on the car

The stuff from Meguiars worked great. Stuff came right off. Plus I used it to get some other grime that had been on the car for awhile off the car as well. Thanks.

It always makes me nervous to hear people trying to remove some foreign matter from their paint by "Scrubbing it" with a wash cloth. This can scratch the paint.

Using the Clay Bar was an excellent suggestion.

Sounds like you got it off, just hope you didn't scratch the paint in the process. To be sure, look at the car under flourescent lighting. You would be surprised at how many fine scratches your car probably has.

After the stuff came off I looked carefully and did not find any scratches. I did not use a flourescent light to look, nor did I get a out a microscope to examine the paint. Also I was not able to shoot the car with high frequency radio beams attached to a computer to analyze the diff in the paint after the gunk came off.
A claybar would have had to have been mail ordered as I don't think my local autozone would have had one. Meanwhile while waiting for this claybar the car would have spent an entire day sitting in the sun where I work and the gunk would have stayed in the sun all day as well. So it was imp that I get the stuff off soon.

Now all you have to do is apply a good Wax to the area and you're done.

autozone would have had one...hell Kmart sells them...look for a Meguirs box with a combo: quick detailers spray and a clay bar it is inexpensive
