Unbelievable! How did they manage to fit 4 seats in the RX7?
And it is more powerful than before! That would make an interesting purchase!

not to burst your bubble but not exactly new news... and this is not the first year the RX-7 has been producing 280 ps (to my knowledge anyway)-

You are probably right about the 280ps power but what about fiting 4 seats in the rx7?

that very well may be a new feature for the '02 year-

I did a (random :) ) search in the Japanese site and found a picture of the 4 seat interior

also on that site they have a nice screen saver. although most of the information isn't in english it's still kinda spiffy to see a rotory screen saver w/ all gens of the RX-7

The 4-seat RX-7 is more of a 2+2 than a true 4-seater. If you've ever looked at a Supra or 3000GT, you'll see that those cars also have a pair of rear seats, but there pretty much useless unless you're a small child.

The four seat was supposed to originally be an option for the 93 but they dropped it for the states. It was a part of the original design concepts.

In Japan, the RX-7 has always been this way.

Two seaters are frowned upon in Japan, it's a cultural thing. There are exceptions, of course, in the case of roadsters.

The SA/FB (original RX-7) was a 2+2 in Japan, but it required the removal of a collision brace that was necessary to meet US crash regs. You could, however, get the rear seats from Mazda dealers as an option but they're unusable for anyone other than a child or a small dog.

The FC (second generation RX-7) was also available as 2+2, even in the United States. You will occasionally see a 2+2, but once again, they're rare in the US.

And of course the FD (3rd gen RX-7) was available in Japan as a 2+2 but there were never any plans to sell it as such in the United States.

Only the "hardcore" sports models of the RX-7 were two-seaters in Japan, like the Infini IV and RZ.

I had a 87 GXL 2+2. I loved it!

Very informative first post SmokingClutch.
I think I’ve seen a 2+2 second generation RX7 and the back seats are more usable than in other cars like the audi TT for example.
