View Full Version : Purchasing plans?
I'm curious about how many people here actually plan to buy an RX-8, and when. I'm sure there are many people that are early adopters that plan on buying as soon as the car is available, there are probably some that won't buy for a year or two, and others that don't have a driver's license yet, much less the income to purchase one. There are probably some that are considering it, but will need to see the available options, and drive the car before choosing it.
Just to get things started, I seriously considered getting one as soon as it came out, but decided that I really didn't want a 4-seat car, and that I was simply transporting my desire for an FD RX-7 onto the RX-8. So, I ended up getting a 2002 Miata. Maybe after I've paid off my 626 I'll end up with an RX-8, but I'm really hoping that there will be a 2005/2006 4th generation RX-7. I don't care how much I lose selling my Miata, if they get the RX-7 right my checkbook will be open!
I leased my 2002 TL one year ago.. and I have 3 years left. So thats 3 years until I purchase a RX-8.
Pork Chop 07-30-2002, 11:11 PM I'll probably take a good look at one when it gets released, then I'll make a decision if it lives up to my expectations. On paper, it really offers everything I'm looking for, but who knows what the real car will end up like in a year.
Then there's the whole price gouging issue that might make things difficult.
oh yeah.. ill be test driving this car everday until i get my own!!!
KayakDaddy 07-31-2002, 12:40 AM I’m definitely in the plan to purchase category. It’s not so much a matter of if, but when for me.
When depends on what we do with my wife’s car. We need a little larger car so we’re planning on selling her 328i and getting a 5-series sometime this fall. According to how crazy we get buying her car (we’re looking 99-01) depends on how long it will take me to get enough money again to buy the RX-8. Right now I’m thinking I should get one in late ’03, early ’04.
Another thing I really want to hold out for is the Mazdaspeed version. I want to see when and if it will be available and what it’s going to give me for the extra cash. I mainly want it to have some performance upgrades; bigger brakes, 300+ hp, etc. I'd like it to be a little more aggressive looking to differentiate it from the standard version, but still on the conservative side. If it’s going to be sweet, I’m willing to wait a little longer to get the more powerful edition.
Oh yeah, I’ll test drive it and make sure I like it too, but I’m sure this is the car for me.
ZoomZoom 07-31-2002, 04:01 AM I have already given them a $500.00 deposit for mine back in Apr'02 when I first saw it for real at the car show.
They tell me that it should be ready by Feb’03 but I will wait until Apr’03 because of the Canadian winters, plus it gives me two more months to save some additional money.
It will be a long two months.
red_base 95 07-31-2002, 07:47 AM I'll be looking to purchase in the Fall of '03, provided my current car (95 beretta) makes it that long. Hopefully, that will be long enough to avoid the "at-launch" craziness next spring that may result in limited supply and price gouging. This may also allow for time for improvements and fixes to any bugs that materialize in the 1st production run. I just hope I don't run into wait lists at the dealers.
Strider 07-31-2002, 08:05 AM I have 2 more years until my civic is paid off and 4 more years until i'm finally out of college, so I'll be purchasing mine when I get out of college.
Hopefully by then the Mazdaspeed version will be out-
BlueAdept 07-31-2002, 08:55 AM For the first time, I think I've found a car that's perfect...
It'll take me a while before I can afford it at the mo, which is perfect really since I'll be in a position to buy towards the end of '03... Perhaps some of the more obvious bugs would be worked out and things would have calmed down by then.
Obviously I'll need to test drive a real car, and make sure it really is as good as it looks/specs... but it does seem like it will be.
I have looked hard at the S2000, but it has a few niggles and I don't want a convertable.
RX-pecting 07-31-2002, 10:14 AM I'm in this one with my parents, so IF they give the final ok, we'd put a collective downpayment together by October of 2003.
My theory is that the gold rush will last maybe 6 months and then the tight, price-gouged market will loosen a little, plus I'm counting on october sales to lighten the price tag.
I see that you guys are waiting longer, this will be the first car I contribute to financing, I'm looking forward to the challenge (21 year-old full time student), but I'm not by any means familiar with purchasing, is Oct 2003 too soon for a budget-oriented purchase?
Someone PLEASE supply input?
Strider 07-31-2002, 10:50 AM is Oct 2003 too soon for a budget-oriented purchase?
personally I would say yes... I too am a college student and I don't plan on getting a new car unless I know I can put a large chunk of money up for the down payment. I would like to have the payments as low as possible. Also as a hint don't finance at the dealer... always go to a bank-
n22lasing 07-31-2002, 11:45 AM I'm more on the Maybe side. I will be ready to purchase a car around Spring time, but what car is undecided. It's between the G35 coupe, the RX-8, and the WRX STi if available. I'll want to test drive them all before I commit. So far, w/out testing the car, the RX-8 is my favorite!
As far as financing the car at the dealer vs the bank. It only depends on who is giving you the better APR and Term. Many dealers are giving 0% apr, and if you qualify for that. Do it. :D
boowana 07-31-2002, 12:43 PM I have already put a deposit down with a local dealer who has agreed to sell me one at list. I will NEVER pay a dime over list for anything! Also, if the final price with options exceeds $35K, I'll be buying a Mazdaspeed Miata.
Color and option choices are due in the Oct/Nov timeframe from what I've been told. I have no problem as an early adapter to having one of the first ones. Mazda has done a good job in the past in this regard...:D
TheLaw 07-31-2002, 12:51 PM I plan on finishing off my lease for my Nissan Sentra, and then taking a look at this car and the 350z. Two more years to go.
zoom44 07-31-2002, 03:07 PM i plan to buy mine right away. if it comes out at the right price. i still want to drive it first to see if it lives up to expectations. hopefully they'll have the right color silver but if not i'll consider other colors. it will all come down really to how it feels to drive it. and of course that matching child safety seat;)

I was actually more concerned about the price gouging and fincance rates than about the down, with what I have and what I can make next summer, plus whatever my parents will be willing to put down, the down payment should be adequate,
so will the price gouging and finance rates drop enough if I wait 6 months and buy in oct 2003?
khoney 07-31-2002, 06:28 PM If I can fit in it as well as in my '87 TII, and it lives up to my expectations, I will buy a loaded one. BUT not a penny over MSRP. Just gotta keep the 7 goin' until then. Man, summer in San Antonio really sucks without A/C...
There's no way to know when the price gouging will be over. My guess is that there will still be dealers that will be charging over MSRP, and some that will never charge over MSRP. How many are charging over MSRP will be determined by how popular the car is and how high the production numbers are. I went into a lot more detail on my thoughts on price gouging here (http://www.rx8forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=251&perpa), so I won't reiterate in this thread.
PatrickB 07-31-2002, 06:44 PM Let me second the matching child safety seat. We just got the good news about having our first one on the way today! :)
Toadman 07-31-2002, 07:13 PM Yes, congratulations man! :)
PatrickB 07-31-2002, 07:19 PM Thanks. :)
KayakDaddy 07-31-2002, 07:36 PM That's great news man!
Your life is now changed forever, for the positive I'm sure.
I just took my 2.5 yr old son out Canoeing today. He loved it and it's good for my soul. Times like that are worth every sacrifice you have to make.
Another enthusiastic vote for the matching child seat from me too!
zoom44 07-31-2002, 07:54 PM congratulations patrickb! :)
congrats on the happy news patrickb
--especially on the fun times you'll spend changing diapers...--just joking :P
IWANTanRX8 08-01-2002, 11:40 AM When my now-fiance and I saw the yellow RX8 at the Detroit Auto Show in January, she said she'd let me buy one if a child seat could fit in the back. Of course, we've all seen the pictures of the matching seat!! We're getting married in July 2003, so I'm thinking Spring 2004 for an RX8 Purchase.
I currently own an Escape. So does she. One SUV is PLENTY, thank you!!
JM'sRX-8 08-05-2002, 04:52 PM I plan on buying a RX-8 as soon as they hit the showroom floor. I was curious as to that date though. On every RX-8 site that I have been on, it says "2004 RX-8", not 2003....?
zoom44 08-05-2002, 05:15 PM think the rumor of it not coming out 'til 2004 is because they are going to call it a 2004 model, same as they did with the mpv, bring it out after the new year starts for the rest of the line uo and badge it for the following year. makes it look like they launced next years car really early
fro m me in an earlier post:D
B-Nez 08-06-2002, 04:53 AM I am definitely buying mine the day they arrive at my local. I'm supposedly number one on "the list". Already have a monster down payment set aside, and gave away my Jeep last month. Getting a POS to get me to work in the meantime. The waiting is definitely hard. Just returned from OEF (again), I go back to the office next Monday, but no car yet. If I wasn't so fanatical about rotaries, I'd consider just getting an A4 Quattro or a WRX right now. But I know I'll be glad I waited when I get into it for the first time.
Fifth-gen 08-07-2002, 12:34 PM I'm a new guy here, but thought I'd put my angle in. I have a 2000 Miata SE that I really like, but I a new Rx-8 would be my fifth new rotary car (hence the nick) I drove through the '80s in '81, 83, '85, and '88 Rx-7s, all of which were the most reliable and satisfying cars I ever owned. Well, then I got the Miata. Its a very different beast, but I love it and will not even consider trading it for an Rx-8. If my budget allows, however, I might be convinced to try the '8 as an addition to my stable. Personally, I have no need for a four-seat car, and would rather have a layout like the '7 with a hatch for big stuff. Maybe I should wait for that...
Ozone 08-07-2002, 01:21 PM I do intend to purchase this car at some point, but I plan to wait at least a year, maybe two, to actually purchase. I have found it is usually a good idea to wait when a brand new model is released, especially with an unproven engine. Waiting will also give the hype a chance to die down and any initial quality problems to get sorted out. Case in point, my wife wanted to get the new Jeep Liberty when it came out last summer, but we decided to see how the reliable the cars turned out to be. Sure enough, there were some issues. DC got their act together, fixed the problems and I believe our Liberty is a much better car than the original models off the production line.
FamilyGuy 08-09-2002, 01:01 PM I really, really want one. But there's no way I'll be able to afford it new before 2006. I want to support Mazda for making what will hopefully be one of the coolest cars on the road, but with a house, cars, and eventually kids, an extra car payment + insurance payment is too much.
I bought my first new car last year, a 2001 Chevy Impala (comfy, roomy, good gas mileage, handles fine in snow, great safety rating, by no stretch of anyone's imagination fun to drive). I owe $17,000 on the loan, and the book value of my car is $12,500. Learned my lesson... for a front wheel or all wheel drive car, I'll never buy new again.
If the RX-8 positively rocks, costs less than $30,000 with the options I want, has a respectable safety rating, and doesn't lose 40% of its purchase value in the first year (like my !@#$%^& sedan), I'll buy one once I'm done paying off my Chevy. If it doesn't, I'm going have to wait until one of the first year buyers dumps his Rx-8 for a Mazdaspeed Rx-8 and buy his old one.

Now, I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that price gouging was illegal in Canada. You may want to double check that, but I'm pretty sure you should be able to get the car for at most MSRP. I know things are a little different in the States though.
Jeff20B 08-11-2002, 03:45 PM The RX-8 is the only new car I'd ever purchase.
BlueAdept 08-11-2002, 05:45 PM >The RX-8 is the only new car I'd ever purchase.
I'm inclined to agree... I've not yet found another car I'd even concider spending nearly this amount of money on.
S2000 came close, but there's just a few imperfections for my environment/situation.
RX-pecting 08-12-2002, 09:50 AM I'd asked about gouging to some of my Kanuk cohorts here, but we never really came to any conclusion.
The dealership I went to offers the car at MSRP for those who put a deposit. The vendor said though that if I were to make a walk in purchase, that it would be more.
Im not sure if price gouging means "selling at higher that MSRP" but if it does, then Canada is DEFINITELY not immune to it, cause I've been to alot of dealerships and found that they offered the car at higher, which cripples negociations, cause everyone knows that when you start higher... you end higher:(
BUT YOU COULD REALLY HELP OUT A BRUTHA:cool: :
is gouging illegeal in Canada? if so that would mean some (many)dealers aren't playing it straight, and believe me, nothing would make me happier than calling the Better Business Bureau and dropping a few well chosen names... so please, anyone with info about the legalities of slashing a consumer's wallet share with us here.
IS PRICE GOUGING ILLEGAL IN CANADA?

BlueAdept 08-12-2002, 11:19 AM Neither dealer I emailed even replied... which is odd since I'm undoubtedly going to spend a lot of money with one of them... probably the one that replies first with some information on when they will know more about availability and when I could put a deposit if necessary.

It varies from province to province, but I believe that it is illegal in Ontario to price gouge.
