View Full Version : Firm ware upgrade for Rx8 Audio Head Units and OEM NAV Systems
If you have an older Head Unit that is not running Firmware ver 9.67 We can upgrade it for you. This will allow the P.I.E. Maz/PC-ALP Aux input to work with out shutting down your HU every 20 seconds.
We can also upgrade the oem DVD unit to Ver U9.139 2004.1 . Also an upgraded ROM IC. This will give you the new Mazda startup screen with smaller fonts and better Nav system user input.
See this thread for more info on the DVD system changes http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=29229&highlight=dvd+upgrade (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=29229&highlight=dvd+upgrade)
The Price for this service is very low. To upgrade one unit $50.00
to do 2 units (HU and DVD) 75.00 .
You pay for shipping both ways, Make up a UPS Return Lable and enclose it in the box. Make sure yo do not leave you Map DVD in you DVD drive when sending us those.. And please do not send your entire Dash, Face plate, CD player, We only want your Head Unit!!!
This price for Rx8club members only. The service will take 1 day after receipt of the units.
To check your head unit's software code: Power the radio on, then press and hold the text and preset 1 buttons at the same time (you might need to start pressing the text button slightly before the preset 1 button). The Software version should be in the display. '04 vers. 9.40/9.50/9.53/9.55, and '05 ver. 9.67 (poss. SAT compatible).
"EX-1" will still blink, even though the aux input is working.

Communic8 09-30-2004, 08:20 PM This is very interesting. I have found DIY information on how to remove the head unit. Do you know if there is a DIY for the Nav DVD?
Is there any risk of damaging the units, or making them incompatibel with future releases from the makers?
Has anyone had this service performed yet?
Thank you. c8
yes i have done it for several members.
its very easy to remove the DVD unit. you just have to pop out the rear armwrest.
As long as is packaged well then there is no risk. And this firmware upgrade will insure it is compatible with future Map releases.. Keep in mid this is not a new map for the DVD . It is the Firmware that makes it work. I love the new changes.
Communic8 09-30-2004, 08:42 PM OK, the price is very reasonable.
I looked at the pictures in the link. My 2-month-old RX8 has all the same images, like the close-ups of intersections. Is there a way to find out a version number for the software in the DVD unit?
If I can see the close-ups, is there any reason to change its firmware? I saw a user making a "carputer" that looks cool, is this firmware better for doing a project like that?
Yes. just go into the setup for the DVD Nav system. it will tell you the version there.
the changes are Higher Res fonts. a better input screen for address and names. Also you can turn the voice off. IT has the split screen on some locations and the voice will announce the Freeway names and such. Over all its a better operating system. It is possible that your 8 came with the newest firmware. Just go into the setup section and check the firmware. if yours is below ver U9.139 2004.1 then you could use the upgrade.
as for carputer. this wont really change anything there. it will only change how the OEM dvd Map system works.
Thanks for you intrest
Thew
truemagellen 09-30-2004, 10:39 PM My 8 was on the second ship to the US so I have a May 2003 build...with HU version 9.53 :( I was about a week away from soldering an RCA cable straight onto the head unit (VOIDING my warranty) since the PIE adapter doesn't work with version 9.53. Fortuntately someone told me that my HU could be upgraded to the latest version through one of the guys on this forum...I was excited but apprehensive.
I spoke with thew several times about it and I decided to take the plunge and have him upgrade my HU...I am so happy I decided to do it!
the upgraded HU arrived just the other day
...before putting the HU back in I hooked up the Maz/Alp PIE adaptor and the RCA cables...I hooked everything back up (reconnected the battery too) and hooked up my MP3 player using a mini plug to RCA adapter. I turned on the car and pressed the mode button on the steering wheel till EX1 showed up on the display..and the audio piped through CRYSTAL CLEAR...I am extremely pleased since I can carry around 5 gigs of music now and hook it up to the car.
Plus the quality was just as good as a CD in the in the HU!
I'm planing on getting the Denison Alpine connector to hookup to my NOW working PIE adapter and be able to control an IPOD from the steering wheel!
thanks thew!
Thommino 10-01-2004, 03:49 AM It is not a CD-ROM or DVD to upgrade my DVD-Unit-Software (Firmware) without remove it.
I want split screen.
Thanks
no its not a CD type of upgrade .. Also the units are not the same. I can upgrade only U.S. Spec DVD and Head units. Sorry :(
Thommino 10-01-2004, 04:10 AM I'm an European user. My Mazda has Panasonic CN-DV2300 European Version.
Where Can I find DVD to upgrade Firmware of my car?
Not sure Maybe there (Panasonic) Site.
Thommino 10-01-2004, 04:40 AM No on Panasonic site there is no upgrade Software.
I ask to Panasonic and they told me to ask MAzda Italia :-(
also try the maker of the Nav software.
Thommino 10-01-2004, 05:44 AM "The maker of nav software"?
I don't understand
Yes.. who supports your Nav system over there.. Take out your DVD whos name is on it?
Thommino 10-01-2004, 02:53 PM DVD of maps?Navteq. I already call them and they tell to ask to Madza Italia
The DVD-ROM Unit Panasonic!
truemagellen 10-01-2004, 03:02 PM hey Thommino...go to the software/hardware version screen of your nav system...type up all the numbers here or take a nice picture and upload it
pmacwill 10-01-2004, 04:23 PM can you offer more explaination on what exactly we have to pull and ship to you?
Thommino 10-01-2004, 05:59 PM I think that my version is software version was : M9.99 2003.2
But tomorrow I ckeck better
can you offer more explaination on what exactly we have to pull and ship to you?
depends on what you want.. Upgraded Head Unit? for the Pie Aux input ?
or do you want the Updated Nav dvd Firmware.
Both are easy to remove.
DVD of maps?Navteq. I already call them and they tell to ask to Madza Italia
The DVD-ROM Unit Panasonic!
Well I know that your unit and the U.S. unit are not exactly the same. So any updates you get will have to be from someone over there :( .. Like here it seems that the new units are built with the updates so you could buy a new OEM dvd if you really wanted it.. But thats a bit much .
Thommino 10-01-2004, 07:03 PM I want Split DVD screan.
Ok I check now my version:
Area DVD:Seamless Western Europe
Version DVD: 12.30.20.3
Software Version: M9.99 2003.2
Can an European user help me and send me the cd-rom to upgrade?
Thanks
I wish i could help you.. but the Non U.S. Spec DVD unit can not be upgraded by me :(
I dont belive anyone in the U.S. can do it. IT would have to happen over there ...
IF you want the new screens so bad just get you dealer to order you a new dvd unit.
Good luck
Thommino 10-02-2004, 10:02 AM I pay the Navigation DVD unit 2300Euro more than 2500$,
I retire my car 1 mouth ago. I want a free upgrade. Nobody European user can help me?
Thanks
JoeRX8ter 10-02-2004, 12:26 PM Thew,
I have a 9.55 head unit, do I stll need an upgrade?
Tamas 10-02-2004, 12:44 PM Thew,
I have a 9.55 head unit, do I stll need an upgrade?
For using the PIE unit? No, you don't.
truemagellen 10-02-2004, 01:21 PM but you can buy the PIE from thew soon he told me
If you want the Pie adapter to work you must have firmware ver 9.55 and above. So if yours is 9.55 then the Firmware upgrade to 9.67 will not really do anything that you will notice.
Thew,
I have a 9.55 head unit, do I stll need an upgrade?
Yes i am working on Getting the Pie stuff for the RX8 I will be putting a package of a/v stuff together.
When I get the word from Pie.. I will let you know :)
truemagellen 10-02-2004, 03:20 PM hey don't forget you NEED 9.67 for the satellite radio from Mazda...wont work on 9.55
harwax 10-02-2004, 03:39 PM pardon my ignorance. I got delivery of my rx-8 in september 2003. my navigation system "experienced" a software failure about 2 months ago and mazda re-installed software with version U9.136 2003.7. I now have mazda logo on start-up, split screen, easier input, etc. Will your upgrade benefit me and if so, how? I am not sure what a headunit is, or how to tell my version.
thanks
You have the new DVD Nav firmware if you see the Mazda start up screen .. so not for that.. but you will I bet still have the older firmware in your HU. Head Unit is Your Radio Brain. IF you want to add an Aux line level input to your Sound system then you will need the HU upgrade. Also it will allow the HU to talk to an I pod and other such devices while retaining the control via your Steering wheel. Push your Text button and then while holding it in hold down the #1 preset on your radio. (with the Key on) . This will tell you what ver firmware your Hu is running.
If you are not planning on adding any external inputs then you wont really need to upgrade your HU.
Let me Know if that answers your questions :)
I have copied the HU ver list from the Pie Thread to the top of this Thread.
Please help me keep this up to date.
Note: This Service will be unavailable after the 5th of November until December some time. At that point things may change so if you want this done try to get them to me this month. (October)
I wanted to post a big thank you to thew. Today I received a shipment that had the HU and NAV units he was able to upgrade for me, I reinstalled them back in the car and am very pleased with the upgrade.
Thew was responsive to my emails during the process and kept me well informed at each step. I'd highly recommend this service for anyone that needs or just wants these updates.
slavearm 10-06-2004, 01:55 PM Hey Thew,
Can I drive up on a weekday or weekend and just do the upgrade on the spot? I work in LA so it's not that far of a trip.
Thanks,
Slavearm
flyboyindy 10-16-2004, 10:58 AM Thanks Matt..=) The upgrade and turnaround time was INCREDIBLE =)
truemagellen 10-16-2004, 11:59 AM hey flyboy you hooked up the PIE yet? :)
flyboyindy 10-16-2004, 12:53 PM Nope... waiting on the PIE to arrive on tuesday =) Im pumped...
truemagellen 10-16-2004, 12:58 PM your almost there bud :)
YEE haw.. one more 8 with Great Sound :) ....
Brad Theurer 10-21-2004, 05:15 PM A BIG thanks to thew for doing my HU upgrade... everything worked out great and I'm now ready to get Alpine MP3 CD changer + some PIE stuff (MAZ/PC-ALP especially) to hook up to it, plus eventual satellite radio capability. What has everybody heard about if/when the Mazda satellite radio module is coming out? Worth waiting for that vs. getting something now (with appropriate adapters/splitters)?
You are so welcome..
imo I would not wait. but Mazda does say sometime next year. But, I think it will use the same plug as the Pie unit does .. so I would got that way for more options.
did you get the prices i sent ?
truemagellen 10-21-2004, 09:55 PM thew I think you and I can pressure PIE to make a box that allows switching of inputs into the PIE and or EX 1, if that is needed for sat radio
Brad Theurer 10-21-2004, 10:34 PM truemagellan - doesn't PIE already do something like that? I see a part ALP/AI-AUX available that allows both RCA input (sat radio, ipod, etc) AND keep an alpine cd changer hooked up directly as well. When I am ready to get sat radio that's the part I will probably get. There are other similar switchers available for other than Alpine (Sony, JVC, etc.)
yes.. they do :)
ALP/AI-AUX
THE ALP/AI-AUX AUXILIARY INPUT/CD CHANGER SWITCHER IS DESIGNED FOR USE WITH AFTERMARKET ALPINE AI-SERIES PRODUCTS. Boozehound 10-26-2004, 02:17 PM I just checked my HU today and it turns out I'm running 9.53. I'm curious as to what I need to pull in order to upgrade just the HU (already did the Nav with Mazda).
i need you HU .. the small brain box under the CD unit. Take out the HU. and remove all the red screws . then pull the to units apart. you need to send me the HU part only.. and i need it very soon. if its going to happen.
if you want this done EMail me at thew@sbcreative.com tell me your screen name and ill cut and past the shipping and cost info to you. Please hurry.
Boozehound 10-26-2004, 04:38 PM Just curious - while the HU is out and in transit, there shouldn't be any problems created by driving/operating the car as usual correct?
truemagellen 10-26-2004, 05:01 PM no problems...you will have air flowing out of the vents which you can control by the knob but you will not have full controll of the ACC...not a problem at all
just remember to disconnect the battery before you remove it, always do it before you do any electrical work on a car :)
PM me or IM me if you have any more questions and you can't get a hold of Thew, I've already had my HU upgraded with thew, I love having a crystal clear aux in :) :) :)
bochawa 10-27-2004, 07:27 PM I will highly recommend this service to anyone. Super fast turnaround by Thew and Rx8Garage.net!
Driver8 10-28-2004, 04:37 PM Thew - I PM'd you. Let me know whassup. Thanks
Zaku-8 10-28-2004, 07:46 PM Could anyone post directions on removing the dvd unit? I want to avoid scratching anything back there. Do I have to unscrew those two screws under the removable bin? How do I take off the armrest?
truemagellen 10-28-2004, 09:55 PM Could anyone post directions on removing the dvd unit? I want to avoid scratching anything back there. Do I have to unscrew those two screws under the removable bin? How do I take off the armrest?
I just installed the AV electronics unit I bought from thew at rx8garage.net
I have many pics for a DIY, in it lots of info on removing the DVD unit, I should be posting it soon (I've been sick lately :()
Thommino 10-29-2004, 03:44 AM Where do you put the unit?
yes.. wait for the new DIY post.
and the unit is best in the trunk. but it can go in the pass thrue to. is smaller that the TV box. and has more inputs.
ok.. after Nov 1st this program will stop for about 2 weeks. then i will be able to get more done untill around Late Dec. After that it looks like this program will finish up and end.
So if your on the fence nows time. If your one of the many that have had this done . Speek up and let the others know its not that bad. :) ..
So again. I will stop taking any HU's or DVDs on the 1st of Nov ! ..

Driver8 10-30-2004, 11:27 AM Another satisfied customer here. Hooked it back up today and now my PIE adapter works!
Thanks thew!
SlAoTkAiN 10-30-2004, 02:48 PM how are you upgradeing the HU's? I only ask since my ICElink that I've currently installed gets audio going, but the steering wheel controls don't work and I'm about ready to just send the damned thing back since it doesn't work to spec, I have the9.55 firmware and the 2.2 firmware on the iPod I was just curiosu as to how you actually upgraded the firmware of the HU's
its a reflash of the HUs IC chips. but if you have ver 9.55 or higher and your icelink does not work right send it back.. its not the HU.
 Only a few more days left for this untill December .. who still needs there HU upgraded .. speak now or for ever hold your frimware ver 9.53 .. yuck
Thommino 10-31-2004, 04:56 AM How can I check our version?
Genom 10-31-2004, 04:26 PM Hey Thew, I've had a difficult time over here with my wedding coming up. Theres not gonna be any chance to do this after Nov 5th? ever?
If so I'll somehow ship it off tomorrow, but it's gonna be real hard.
yes.. get married well get the HU fixed in about 3 weeks ..
Hey thom to get your firmware push and hold the TEXT button and then at the same time push Preset 1 . if you do it right it will tell you your Firmware. If you do it wrong it will say CLEAR.
Robs8MT 10-31-2004, 09:42 PM Just picked up my 8. Having too much fun driving it. Firmware is 9.53 but would love to upgrade. Is it still available?
Thommino 10-31-2004, 10:09 PM Thew I don't understand why do you want to stop firmware upgrade of HU.
Thanks
The Upgrade program will stop for about 3 weeks. Starting on Nov 3rd. It will resume in the last week of Nov. IF you cannot get the HU to my NY address by then, you will have to wait untill the alst week of Nov.
I hope that helps. I do still have a New 9.67 Bose Head unit Forsale. if someone's in a real pinch and you have a Bose unit we can work something out.
truemagellen 11-01-2004, 12:04 AM Hey Thew, I've had a difficult time over here with my wedding coming up. Theres not gonna be any chance to do this after Nov 5th? ever?

ALXVA8 11-01-2004, 10:23 PM How do I disconnect the atenna cable?
How do I disconnect the atenna cable?
When I pulled my HU I too had problems with the antenna connection, I was sure there was some catch or release I was missing. The answer turns out to be that you simply pull the connector straight back and it will come out, just make sure you are pulling on the connector and not the cable.
truemagellen 11-01-2004, 10:40 PM When I pulled my HU I too had problems with the antenna connection, I was sure there was some catch or release I was missing. ditto if your talking about the HU, if it is the nav's antenna then just push the connector on the bottom (the green connector) and pull out
yes the FM antenna is hard to get out.. pull firmly.
aruffell 11-02-2004, 06:24 PM I reinstalled both my upgraded HU and NAV last night. While I can't tell any visible differences on the HU upgrade because it's more of a "fix upgrade" then adding to its functionality, I did see LOTS of new features on my NAV... I LOVE THE NEW VERSION !!! It resolved most if not all the issues I had with it.
To make a brief list of the new features I personally like best:
- Super fast entry with a keyboard where only applicable letters are on screen so if you are typing AUSTIN (TX) and you are at AU, it will only display T because there is no other entry for a city name in this part of the US that starts w/ AU (Note.: I am not actually sure T was the only one but it was the default selection so I just pressed Enter).
- Takes half the time to configure a route... route processing is so much faster !!!
- resolution looks higher, and fonts and readability of the screen is much better
- it actually calls out interstates with numbers ( ex.: turn left on I 1 South)
- and quite a few other improvements...
Thanks THEW for upgrading my unit... I am sooooo happy I did!
Alex
Gald to see you got it all back up
:) .. FYI i am out of town for 3 days at SEMA so any questios wil have to wait till Nov 6th
:)
jenya 11-10-2004, 03:42 PM I am wondering... Why the hell isn't Mazda doing this for free?! Especially the NAV system upgrade! You look at any software and you always get upgrades for free! In fact, when I called Mazda they only thing they offered me is to buy a whole new unit which is very expensive. This is ridiculous...
because the product Mazda Sold you does just what they desigend it to do. The Upgrade I am doing is not even known to Mazda. They dont really even know that the Radio has a Firmware to upgrade. Mazda would do somthing if your Radio did not work like it is desigend. But it does so they do not really care about this. And most of the newer 8 's now comming off the line have the newest firmware so to them the issue is fixed.
Ok we are back on..
Hurry and get me your HU, and DVD for UPgrade. This program will most likely end after the new year.
Again.. I am now taking Hu and DVDs for all Mazda Rx8, Mazda 3, and Mazda 6's.
xiosmx5 11-29-2004, 06:27 PM Thew,
How long does it take you do do the upgrade because I'd hate to be without my heater controls and defrosters for a long time now that it's getting cold in Philly?
Steve
i dont want your heater controlls. I just want the HU .. and it takes one day to turn it around. Your Heater will work fine and you can drive the car. MAke sure you send just the HU..
I am away untill Wen of this week ..
xiosmx5 11-30-2004, 07:17 AM sorry, I've never pulled the HU. I though it was one complete unit.
truemagellen 11-30-2004, 10:18 AM sorry, I've never pulled the HU. I though it was one complete unit.
no need to say sorry xiosmx5 :) ...actually the term you guys are looking for is the 'HU core' (head unit core)
After removing the HU from the vehile you remove all of the red screws this will release the CD unit and the core...with a little work (maybe a few more screws I'll post the DIY link) the cd unit easily comes apart from the HU core and then you just send in the basic metal frame and the core
it is really easy actually, once you see the thing outside of your car you'll understand completely and could easily do it with no instructions it is that intuitive
hey xiosmx5 if you have trouble message me or thew...I know Thew is out till tomorrow (wed the 31st of december) since he is at LAguna SECA Mazda Raceway burning up the track in his winning blue 8 :) :) :) But he is still checking his email I've been told :) :)
truemagellen 11-30-2004, 10:20 AM here you go xio...there is another DIY for Automatic owners...I don't have the link saved but I can sure find it if you need it (it isn't much different really)
thanks for the help True. :)
xiosmx5 12-09-2004, 01:51 PM Thew,
At the top of this page you state that after the new year you may no longer do the upgrades. With the holidays and all I may not be able to get it to you until the beginning of Jan. I'm gonna want the all the necessary PIE cables and the upgrade Any package deals for that? . Do you think it'll still be available then?
Genom 12-09-2004, 05:32 PM Same here. I am back from my honeymoon, and if I really really had to I could ge tit to you before the end of the year, but it would be hard. Although I'd rather suffer a few days than have to listen to the FM tuner crap anymore.
pmacwill 12-09-2004, 05:41 PM can someone please take a picture of the 'HU core' or what exactly I'm supposed to send thew... it would seriously make it A LOT easier. OR, instead of keeping on saying that therey is a DIY 'somewhere' (I've searched) actually link it? I was about to send him the entire HU thing you pull out of the dash.
the Search system works great here.. Us it ..
Type in HU removal
you get

yes i think so.. but dont delayThew,

pmacwill 12-09-2004, 07:59 PM awesome. so I send you the unit as it is pictured on the top of page 11. thanks a lot! exactly what I was looking for!!
will send it off tomorrow or sat
CactusGeorge 12-10-2004, 05:14 PM Thew:
Received the HU and DVD player back the other day--installed and tested yesterday. Everything works as advertised--I don't know how you get this done, but the result is excellent!
Plugged an XM Roady 2 into the PIE Aux input, double-pressed the CD button and wonder of wonders, I now have sat radio! (The radio display shows "EX" and a flashing "1", I'm assuming this means disk one in the virtual changer--is there any other way to switch to the Aux?)
Also noticed an interesting anomoly. If I have the Nav, HU and XM turned on (EX1), then turn off the XM and HU, the Nav screen displays some Japanese text and a GUI button that reads "TV1". Is it possible to take advantage of this feature to mux in a rear camera or DVD?
yes.. All normal.. And if you search around on the Forum you will see about the Blue Screen.. The Nav system In Japan does have Tv Tuner OEM.. But the USA cars dont support it and dont have the Wireing harness.. So you have to go the route ov the AVelectronic switcher.
http://www.rx8garage.net/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=56&category_id=8961a21fa5e19c6edc346062399c168d&
The HU is looking for the T.V signal . with the Pie box hooked up the HU now thinks the T.V. tuner is there so it shows you that screen that is programed into the HU ..
You will also notice that if you push the cd button again you will get EX2 , EX3 - EX6..
.. The PIE unit will always BE EX1 and the EX1 will Flash ..
plsjr 12-21-2004, 02:23 AM I have a 2004 MX-5 MazdaSpeed with a Bose headunit firmware version # 1.62. I've been blown off by Mazda NorthAmerica regarding the radio ("we don't manufacture the radio"), and information about the manufacturer ("we don't give out other manufaturer information") tuning of only odd decimal FM stations (100.1, 100.3, but not 100.2). I also want to be able to pipe in carputer capability (or as a minimum, external audio and interactive control - al la AuxMod).
Are you still doing the firmware upgrades? Will the upgrade work on my HU? Will it allow "even decimal tuning"? Will you support shipment to an APO address?
Thanks for your good work.

i am confused is the car here in the States but came from over seas?
pmacwill 12-21-2004, 10:29 AM I think he means the car is from the states but is in europe...
also, I wanted to make sure you were still doing the upgrades. I think I'm only interested in the dvd but have been busy with all my holiday errands. Wanted to make sure it wasn't too late to send it (even if the turnaround is slower, it doesn't matter much to me).
plsjr 12-21-2004, 03:52 PM thew - pmacwill is right - I bought the car in the states and now have it overseas (Germany).
Ohh,, ok,, let em get on that.. then .. email me for more info
I have a 2004 MX-5 MazdaSpeed with a Bose headunit firmware version # 1.62.
Thanks for your good work.

still one day turn around and yes it can still be upgraded.
email me i will send you payment and shipping instructions
I think he means the car is from the states but is in europe...

truemagellen 01-22-2005, 03:33 PM click on the link in my signature for DIY on how to take the NAV out...it is easy
there are no seals on the NAV unit so as long as you don't go telling your service department it wont void your warranty

PerHammer 03-03-2005, 03:34 PM Having a hard time getting a Head Unit firmware upgrade done in the UK on my UK spec RX-8 (currently running ver 9.55). Does anyone know how to upgrade it (other than sending it off to Thew, which I'd gladly do, but probably wouldn't do me any good as it's a UK radio)? Is it a case of soldering out and replacing PROMS? Reprogramming EEPROMS? Running a magic update-CD? (Please, let it be the update-CD!) Thew - do you mind sharing your wisdom (by PM or email if you prefer)? I would like to know what's involved so I can assess if there's even the remotest chance my dealer could do it for me (they're usually pretty sharp, I just need to get them clued up).
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
=Per
aruffell 03-03-2005, 08:12 PM I had it done and received a chip back, so at the least it is a chip replacement... and maybe it also needs to be reprogrammed once the chip is replaced. It is a surface mount chip so not something anyone can do. Hope this helps!
PerHammer 03-04-2005, 03:11 AM Yeah, mate, that helps a lot - at least now I know what to ask for!
Thanks for your help,
=Per
no the chip came from your DVD.. and no there is no way that I know of to upgrade the UK HU. its because your system is diffrent.. We dont have Cliamate controll.. and your FM radio tunes diffrent Freq.. IF i did Upgrade your HU you would not get any FM stations and your Heater/Climate controll will not work ! :(>.. The PRocess of the Upgrade is complex.. it is not a chip replcement or just some software.. The Firmware in the HU is Striped and replaced via a computer that does this..
PerHammer 03-04-2005, 04:52 AM Thanks for the update, Thew, much appreciated! I've written to Mazda UK asking their advice regarding upgrading the firmware, fingers crossed they'll know what to do.
Cheers,
=Per

miata2rx8 05-12-2006, 06:01 PM hi, I got my headunit upgraded and added the pie unit so I could hook up xm radio.
Everything has been working great for a year, and now, all of the sudden, the EX1 doesnt flash anymore (is just shows EX1 without flashing) and after about 20 seconds, the headunit cuts out.
Has this happened to anyone else?
I am guessing your Pie unit has come slightly unplugged.
If you still have audio from the pie unit.. If not send me the Pie unit and ill see what's up with it.. in the mean time ill send you a new unit if its the Pie.. But I think your connector is loose.

nationapn 07-04-2007, 03:14 PM Is it still possible to get the 9.67 HU firmware update for $50 for rx8club members? I just purchased my RX8 a few days ago and bought a car pc today with the Mazda car2pc connector. Thank you!
truemagellen 07-05-2007, 04:14 PM The firmware update is still available but that price is sadly no more. There is a significant discount if you order PIE and the upgrade at the same time. I would recommend it :).

Doesn't the HU already come with a PIE?
truemagellen 07-17-2010, 05:36 PM Doesn't the HU already come with a PIE?
The head units included aux input after 2006 or so...older head units had nothing.
The HU upgrade is no longer available though.
