Personally, Ichiro's quest for the record is the only time I have been remotely interested in baseball since....well.....I have never really liked watching baseball.

This guy is a hustler and a real baseball player. Part of the reason I hate baseball is because the players are generally pretty lazy. I hate seeing them get a hit then trot over to first base because they assume they will be thrown out. A lot of players do this. If I was a first base coach, I would freakin lose it on some of these guys. No hustle.

Ichiro on the otherhand, takes off like a bat out of hell as soon as the ball touches his bat. It could be a grounder to first base and he would be running his heart out to beat the tag. I have seen him outrun plays more times than I can count. I actually enjoy watching him play, he seems to love the game.

It pisses me off how this event, while getting press, is not getting the press it deserves. You can bet your ass that if we put derek jeter in the same position the press would be going nuts....it's too bad.

Good luck Ichiro, and I hope more players like you emerge. You make the game fun to watch.

wow you should watch more baseball there are plenty of guys who work hard all the time its just that you don;t hear much because they are not superstars. There are guys who are just glad they have made it this far. yes there are a ton of guys like Barry Bonds who expect to be waited on hand and foot but you have to give credit to the little guys who work their butts off. namely guys like David Eckstein and still Sammy Sosa (despite corked bat incident and sub-par year). Take the time to follow some of the unknown players and you will find that a lot of them love the game at ton!

Well, thats my point. There are a lot of guys who work there asses off and have big hustle, the problem is, they are not the superstars. Ichiro has a chance to take a record that has stood for nearly forever because of his hustle. I have no desire to hear about or watch "superstars" who jog to first cause they think they will get thrown out. Thats just lazy. I want to see everyone hustle! Even sammy sosa is a tad lazy sometimes. I have seen him trotting to first on a outfield fly, outfielder drops it, so he starts puttin the juice on to get to second and gets thrown out. If he had been flying to whole time it would have been an easy double. Get in the game man.

I am a big football fan. And if I saw a corner slow up cause he figured the WR would make a catch in the endzone I would freak out....AND he would be off the team. Other sports don't seem to have the same problem that I see in baseball.

Ichiro is a great player but as of today he has 50 more at-bats and 2 more games than Sisler had the year he got 257 hits. As for the Press I think it's a Big city thing. Barry Bonds gets tons of press and he is not a Yankee.

I'm not a big baseball fan, but can we compare this to modern basketball? Wilt Chamberlin would have never scored 100 points the way today's game is played. Can we say that pitching is better than Sisler's day, so Ichiro is a better ball hitter?

Imagine Ichiro and Bonds on the same team.. that's like 2 runs guaranteed each game at least. :P

It's still difficult to argue who is better now than before... because of the increase in talent, the traveling difficulties in the past, more games being played now..etc etc.. so many factors. Some records are just astonishing still... Look at Bond's... when he beats Hank Aaron's record, that will be something. When someone in the NBA beats Kareem's most points, that would be something. Ichiro's record is pretty daunting since the record hasn't been this close ever.
