racing beats is the heaviest (dont have the weights in front of me) but i swear you have to hear it in person. none are making any more real power than stock so you need to judge between weight and sound. even the mazdspeed one doesnt really produce any more power. although it and racing beat probably are the only ones that produce that power across the whole range instead of at the peak. still your really only choosing between sound/weight. well and materials and looks. the greddy tips are really big

get a titanium exhaust, no stainless steel system would lighter than titanium.

Zoom's got a point... if you're THAT worried, be prepared to hit upwards of $1.2K for one of these titanium puppies... otherwise, aluminum is aluminum.

Stock (they say) is 40lbs., but I don't believe that after installing mine... maybe just the muffler unit alone; the cat-back pipe is fairly heavy stock.

RB is said to be around ~36-38lbs, and the cat-back pipe is a featherweight. Maybe some of the Miami 8's could answer this one easily, seeing as tho most of us here have a different exhaust from the next...

I like them all! But I think It's between the MazdaSpeed cuz I like that low growling sound at low RPMs and the Borlas High RPM wail which sounds like a sport bikes. The Greddy and RB sounds like too many civics out there, kinda that brassy side which is nice but I want my 8 to sound different and higher end. Any idea about the quality of the Borlas?

If the clip you listened to was form the Mazdatrix Rx-8, then if I'm not mistaken, that car also has a K&N intake.

Believe me, my RB exhaust sounds nothing like any Civic I've heard (and there are a ton to "sample" where I live.)

I just got the Greddy and like it, FYI NO RX-8 exhaust will give you 12 HP 4hp at the most. This mod is for looks and sound only.

Racing Beat has a nice article about HP and RX-8 exhausts on

the borla sounds best, but looks the worse.

if you don't like the borla, i would recommend going for something that has the least amount of bends in the exhaust for the best flow, and narrow it down based on what sound you prefer.

Is it just me or do all just about sound the same? The RX-8 is a sweet car, but let's face it, it will never sound as good at a throaty V-8 Mustang.depends on what you're looking for. Of course a rotary isn't going to sound like a v8, but reversing your logic, a v8 isn't ever going to "whirr" like a rotary.

Many of the aftermarket exhausts do sound similar, but it really is hard to tell when listening from different video cameras in different locations with different mic sensitivity.

I have the Racing Beat muffler, and its quality is fantastic, but I have to agree; it really sounds close to stock to me; and I would in fact prefer that V8 bellow. (Too bad you have to drive a Mustang to get it.)

Don't get me wrong, fellas. I've driven an RX-8 and the experience was amazing. I love the way it handles. I used to have a 1994 Cobra and it used to purr like a kitten at idle and roar when you wanted it go, but it could never come close to gripping the road like an 8 does. I'm looking to buy an 8, so I guess that Japanese motorcycle sounding whine is going to take some getting used to.

XeRo
12-18-2004, 09:19 PM
umm...i ride bikes and own an 8 and they sound nothing alike...i think you need to stick to american autos if that's the sound you're looking for...a bike is still a piston engine...there is NO sound like a rotary...

That is ONE pound lighter that the stock system.

heh. I did a google search for borla, and i found one site that claimed the borla was 45 lbs (WEIGHT ESTIMATED ONLY). I guess that was a way to charge more on shipping.

When I installed my borla, I had both exhausts in my hands, and the borla was significantly lighter. I can't say how much, but I would assume it's more than 5 lbs lighter.

This video is the borla + turbo + catless on the dyno:

Nice deep note to it.

Now, same car, same catless midpipe, same video camera, but with the HKS legamax exhaust:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5YDqSnvpwo

The HKS isn't as loud, and the note isn't as deep. Still sounds good though. And I like the Y pipe better than the borla.
