If I was going to buy a computer... they'd be the only ones I'd buy.

But granted, I build my own...so all manufacturers are garbage to me.

Yeah, I build my own too. It's the only way to go . . . cheaper AND better.

I also build my own cases. :)

I have one, Green too, AMD Athlon 2000+, 1GB of RAM, GForce4, AND ITS GREEN! But in all seriousness i owned 2 Dells before this and this thing takes the cake. It 1 year old been shut down 4-6 times and still running way to rich ;) I uploaded a picuture of my room which has the comp in it, if i was ur parent i'd force you to buy it.

Alienware is a nice company, but WAYYYYYYYY overpriced. We're looking at buying a gaming machine right now, and considered Alienware, but when specing it out it was about $1500 MORE than the same basic machine elsewhere. You're paying a LOT for the name, and a few little extras.

However, my BIL has an Alienware laptop and loves it. He just blew all his savings when he bought it.

polak that case/keyboard/mouse color is DOPE!!!

You can't compare other company comps to alienware. Unlike most other companies alienware only uses the top of the line parts when building a computer. I would recommend people to buy from alienware if they don't know how to make their own. The alienware case is just a chieftech full tower modified. Many other companies like antec have taken the tower and modified it too. Color of cases are easy to change just buy a can of spray paint haha. I actually moddied my case a year ago with a window, 2 blue led fans, and a sound activated light haha. Building your own computer is the only way to go if you want to cut prices and get the best performance.

nice room setup polak, i like that corner unit. i need one, it's the only way i can study. hah.
is that altec lansing 641 speakers i see? how do they sound? i was planning on getting it until i used up my money on food. so sad...:(

PoLaK
04-22-2003, 04:48 PM
Yes they are the 641's, THEY ARE AMAZING, the only thing that could come close for pc speakers are Klipsch, i've heard both but these have less distortion more wattage per sat. and have a nice crisp tone to them when you just want to listen to some tunes. They help out a lot if your a gamer, I use them for Cal-o CS gaming :p But yea best speakers for the money i have no grips about dishing out the $300-400 bucks for them.

Overpriced but good when they get it right. They don't always. A friend of mine bought one - for twice the price he would have paid for the main parts if he'd bought them individually - and it stuttered and crashed for weeks, until he finally rebuilt/reinstalled the whole thing himself.

I'd certainly have sent it back if I'd paid that sort of money, but he became attached to the branding all over it, the alien-shaped fan covers etc... :)

I suggest you build your own. It would be cheaper and fun!

Here's my rig: (crappy pics, I know)

http://www.rzatek.com/new/Comp0.jpg http://www.rzatek.com/new/Comp3.jpg

Top computer is a dual Athlon, bottom comp is a DEC Alpha.

All home brew, speakers as well. No crappy Klipsch speakers for me! :D

Nice comp RotorGeek.

Alienware is definitely a very good choice ... if you are ready to pay the price for excellence and services.

Take a close look at their proposals, such as the possibility to buy (at reseller price) new components, 3 years warranty without any cost (ups guy pick up and redeviler it three days after), 24/7 online and phone support, automatic technical monitoring, and ... warranty works on the overclocking (that even a dude can do with their software) ...

They are the first in the world to have the newest component and they install you all the latest drivers as soon as it comes.

The dark side is a huge price (3 000 dollars just for a tower, without display). But you have the top, world wide, and any sell made computer can compete ... if you are good enough to do it and MAINTAIN by your own.

That blue light reminds me of something? Oh ya, my buddy bought a computer light like that, and installed it on the inside of his parents car (just behind the rearview mirror on the front windsheild). He has the switch and potentiometer mounted near the cigarette lighter. Did I mention his partents car is a 1998 Mercury Villager? I also like his electrical tape over the rear taillights to make circles lol

alienware is expensive because it was made for gaming, a x-box,ps2 kinda type computer... its beefed up with goodies. I'd rather built my computer... alot cheaper.

Stephan

A computer that is good for game will beat every other PC around on any other application.

Alienware, as explained above, charge their services (maintenance and warranties).

Do your PC, but after you will have to deal alone with it.

Not everyone is able to do it, and even a lot that thinks they can, find that boring and expensive after some troubles ...

It's a personal choice and personally, after experiencing both, I have done it :)

when you build your own computer, how do you know of its compatibilities with every other hardware you put in? i mean is it basically trouble free nowadays? that's my biggest fear. i don't want to spend $500 and not have them be compatible. is this a really stupid question that's been made obsolete by good technology?

pmacwill
04-25-2003, 02:43 PM
compatability is only really a concern with the processor, motherboard, and ram. You have to make sure your processor and memory are within the specifications of the board. As far as drives, plug and play devices, video cards, sound cards etc, almost all of these rely on Drivers in the OS. (make sure your video cards agp multiplier is the same as the motherboard as well though). For most devices running under XP, you don't even have to use the manufacturers install discs. XP will just recognize them. You run into many more difficulties with running under linux, but if you are even considering on buying prefab instead of building your own, the odds of you going the open source route is slim to none. If you really aren't sure how to properly maintain a machine on your own and you have the discretionary funds to purchase from a Dell or Alienware, then I highly recommend them for their customer support and warranties

cool, thanks a lot. didn't realize it was just mainly motherboard, processor and ram. and even at that it's just the processor and ram having to be compatible with the motherboard right? what's a recommended motherboard?
btw digisan, you built your own speakers? is that more cost efficient as well? (i assume it is)

EDIT: ok maybe i do ask too many questions...

compatiability between motherboards, ram, and proc is simple, but what does give some people problems is making your own computer and having it come out stable. Even though some parts are compatiable they might not work that great with each other giving your comp instabilities, but then again if you do some research and read some reviews on the products you can't go wrong building your own comp.

Don't forget to put fans in it. The more the better.

Yea a good heat sink fan is a must, it's also a good idea to download a hardware monitor that keeps track of you cpu temp. After modding my computer with 2blue led fans in the window blowing in, pci fitting fan that blows out, and using a thermal take volcano 9 my cpu is at a constant 35 degrees C.
another good webpage is http://www.anandtech.com

how loud do your comps get? i mean with the fan...cuz mine can get loud and it's annoying as hell

AsianStyle
04-26-2003, 01:11 AM
haha yea my computer is pretty loud but you get use to it or atleast I did. It not really that loud its just louder then most prebuilt computers, but what prebuilt computer has 5 fans not including the heat sink? My heat sink is what would make the most noise but I have it spinning at a lower rpm. My heatsink came with an adjustable switch and it has the potential to spin at 5000-5200rpm but i keep it at 4600-4700rpm

6k for a computer 0_0 thats insane haha. I could build the same computer for about half the price haha. The price probably goes to the labor, warranty, and customer service. I do agree that they give nice choices. All top of the line parts, but still the price is a killer haha. They give you the choice of 2gigs of ram and a terabyte(1kgigs) haha. The hd by it self would be about 1k haha.

Stephan

voodoo is not delivery better computer in term of performances, and certainly not in services ... but you can personnalize your PC ...

But what a price !!!
