View Full Version : Etiquette for exiting a parking lot?

The exits for two different parking lots that I frequent, feed onto three-lane (each direction) roads, just before those roads hit intersections. Many of the people exiting the parking lots want to get across all three (very busy) lanes and do a left or U-turn at the intersection.

So ... they stop at the exit and wait until all three lanes are clear, then cut across to the left turn lane. They will keep waiting even though the first lane in front of them is clear, and they could turn out into that lane without any problem.

I am often in this situation, as either the lead car exiting the parking lot or behind the lead car. When I am the lead car, I will only wait for all three lanes to clear if there is no one behind me. If someone is behind me, I will take the first opening in the first lane, go up to the intersection, turn right, then make the first legal U-turn.

Most people are not so considerate. They will wait there for several minutes, even though the first lane is clear, and even though three people are waiting behind them. If each car in the line pulls this stunt, then the hindmost guy winds up waiting a LONG time to exit the lot.

So ... is it cool to wait for all three lanes to clear if someone's behind you? Is it cool to honk at someone in front of you who's doing it? (And I'm not even sure it's legal to cut across three lanes like that.) I dunno, but it pisses me off. For now, I just avoid those exits whenever someone's ahead of me.

I think it's definitely okay to honk at those inconsiderate people. Usually it'll fluster them enough to make them turn into the open lane.

On a related note, my parking lot pet peeve is when the exit is wide enough to accomodate two lanes of cars--those who want to turn right, and those who want to turn left. I can't stand those idiots who decide to wait right in the middle of the exit trying to make a left turn. They end up blocking anyone who's trying to make a right turn. These idiots defintely get a lengthy honk of the horn from me.

Heh. You should see what people do at University of Houston. It's a commuter campus, so just about everyone drives to school. I've pulled a stunt or two myself. My parking pass money went to building a new science and research building.

We get that at work - where people take up both lanes where there's room for two. And what's worse is the lanes are painted, and they still sit right in the middle. I think the reason is it's hard to make a left turn there, so they want the option to go right if it's too busy. Duh.

Here's what I hate. When I want to go right and someone in some huge SUV is the left lane and I can't see by them cause they pull right up to the edge of the road. So, we're both stuck there because they can't go and I can't see. Grrrrr....
