I posted this in the drifting thread, but it was requested that it become it's own dedicated topic, so sure.

First, for those of you who don't know, what is Initial D? It's a manga/anime series that is very popular in Japan and is growing in popularity here. It's fairly old across the ocean, but the story hasn't been completed yet and new additions are still happening. The first 8 or so mangas have been released in America (and are very good) by ToykoPop, who is also going to be releasing the translated DVDs here. That should happen fairly soon, I hope. Initial D is all about downhill street racing and drifting. Very good story, and there's even a FC and FD RX-7 in there. :)

Anyway, I've found a server that has all of the episodes from the 1st and 2nd stages, the 3rd stage movie, and the extra stage special episode available for download. They are all subtitled in English, of course. Please note that this is NOT my server, I don't know what the bandwidth of it is or how long it will be up. It's just something I found. Each episode is about 110 mb, 39 episodes.

Enjoy! :D

After I started watching the first episode, I realised that I had seen some of it before. A friend of mine in HK showed it to me, but it was subtitled in chinese, so I really had no clue what was being said. Now that I can follow the plot, it is a really cool series, yeah, definately looking forward to the fourth installment. :)

Yeah, I'm waiting for the 4th Stage too. For those who are interested, the date of release for the English DVDs should be in August. And I beleive they are going to release all of them at once (though that may just be the 1st Stage).

It was brought to my attention that more recent episodes of Initial D have the RX-8! If it's not in the link, it can probably be found elsewhere.

Are the eps in the link the most recent? cause i can't check the link out from my cpu. Not sure if its the manga or the anime, but someone i talked about the rx-8 to FREAKED OUT cause it was this "brand new car in Initial-D!!!" sorry I don't have any more info on it, I can't seem to find anything about it on the web, but then, I've never really been into Initial-D ^_^;

Manga is Japanese comic books (done in this style, of course) and anime is the animated version of the same. What you have been watching is anime.

The game is for arcades, but I know that we over here on the east side of the states don't have it yet, if we ever will. :( There's also a playstation2 version available in Japan, but it's not here yet either, if it comes to the US.

4th stage is being released on PPV in Japan, 1-6 is out already, 2 eps every 3 months...

So far its pretty good, the music is amazing... thsoe links are to bittorrent sites, enjoy, if you like Initial D I'm happy :) b/c I love it

Reason why I want an RX-7 is because I want a yellow one :) lol, go figure this series has a yellow RX-7 in the same styling I want...

Also those 2 sites can be used to download the newest anime on the net...

Bittorrent is odd though, old eps don't get held up long so if its over a month old the link might be dead... so try.... I got all 6 eps of the 4th series they are like 200-300MB each... so I really can't send them to anyone...

I've seen the entire Initial D series up to, but not including the current 4th stage that is now airing every two months in Japan. But the RX-8 is not in the anime. The RX-8 might be new in the most recent mangas in Japan, the mangas are written way before they are made into animes. But I don't read the mangas.

It is one of the new cars in the Arcade game, we have it here in Honolulu. I've played it a few times in Tokyo as well. Also have the Japanese PS2 game, it's great. http://initiald.sega.jp/english/ac_ver03/index.html

In essence yes, it's kinda like Rocky. Except, they built up the main character so much, he becomes the favored instead of the underdog. I say the same thing over and over: Initial D has a mediocre story, mediocre CG, mediocre cel animation, questionable physics, and decent music and I can't stop wanting to watch it.

oh EG6 that is right. The even older model indeed.

EG6 is the first Type R Civic???.. or was it EK6 Type R I was dreaming about. Honestly if I had to import that one I would not save enough money for DC2R or the RX-8 now. Importing the EK6 Type R was really expensive and nearly the same cost as an RX-8.

Initial D is so freshman year. The storyline is so lame, and the artwork is awful. I'll give it some credit, because the CG is right on par with Gran Turismo, the original from 1998. I don't know why anyone would've created a series about downhill. I would think it to be very hard. What's next, Takumi takes his AE86 to D1 and crushes the big boys? Watch Wolf's Rain. It's a damn good show, with damn good artwork, and it doesn't have a crappy techno soundtrack.

i remember one of my friends showing this show, i saw the first few episodes, my friend reminded me of the main characters friend (the one who got excited and kept screaming crap about the 'hachi-roku')...he was nearly creaming his pants over the show....its kinda cool but does nothing for me, like TOD i dont understand no matter how special that car is its still a corolla, and the explanation that its better because its going downhill is kinda silly (wont all the cars get this benefit??????). The graphics were neat though.

Luftwaffle

His dad was a professional racecar driver at some point. He quit and now owns a tofu shop. His son (the main character) makes deliveries really early in the morning as part of his chores to help out the shop. Also, he drives really early because he was driving since he was 14 years old and didn't want to get in trouble with the law. Why does he drive a Corrolla? At some point, his dad said something about that car teaching you how to drive (yeah, I have no idea either). Also, I don't think he's rich, so he got this car and had it tuned, but that's speculation. As the series starts, the main character gets his license and starts getting noticed by street racers. He passes one guy beause he's in the way and has to deliver his tofu. The guy get's pissed, hunts him down and challenges him to a streetrace. The kid doesn't actually like driving, but the streetracer was persistent. Eventally, he was bribed by his dad into taking the challenge. You can watch the rest in the series if you're interested.

*Note: This is a cartoon, i.e. not real life. Street racing is against the law.

no because those other cars have too much power for downhill twisties...the AE86 is just right...later when Takumi's dad drops another engine in there and Takumi learns how to remove the rev limiter he's able to compete uphill as well...basically the story is about good, precise driving/drifting and not pure brute force cars with a lot of horsepower

I don't think Feras doubts its ability... nor do I.....like I said it was a good car for its time.... but for an anime series I just was a little surprised.... there is nothing exciting about a 20yr old beat up trueno..... I was never really interested in it as a result, but maybe the story works as I have never seen it. Now I have to see what the hype is.

that's exactly how they explain it in the anime why Takumi can take on all these cars that are supposed to be able beat him easily, like the Skyline, RX-7, and the WRX...besides Takumi knowing the best way to take each turn and little "tricks" like using leaves or the embankment to slow him down without ever letting off the gas, supposedly he can use the full potential of his AE86 vs. the more powerful cars that are just too powerful...it's a cartoon, i don't think you're supposed to take it so literally

all i know is that when i got a trueno in GT3 (first car) and tuned it to the max, it wasnt even as good as the special SS (shigeno?) Trueno (panda-look like in initial D with the black hood) stock, which happenned to be a pretty good car for its stats and when tuned even better.

yea, again, in the anime they portrayed Takumi as some natural racer...someone with this natural ability to drive that particular car on a downhill mountain pass...he's almost always trailing in the uphill portion but would make up that distance in the end through drafting and precision drifting...i'm sure they gave him an AE86 to drive just to give him the appearance of the underdog and make the series more exciting...i mean, it wouldn't be too much fun if they gave him an Evo to drive from the beginning, even without any skills he's be able to beat out most of the other cars in the series

personally, i stopped watching it after the 2nd Stage...it was fun in the beginning when he didn't take himself or racing too seriously...there's only so many ways the writers can explain how a Trueno can beat all those cars and it just became too unbelievable

So it was a 10 year old car back then. The weird thing is they seem to add newer cars to the story, but the characters have only aged about a year or so.

Why the AE86? Because Initial D is loosely based on Keiichi Tsuchiya, known as the Drift King. He made the Trueno what it is in Japan's drift scene, heck he virtually created the drift scene, and has an AE86 as one of his personal cars.

Well, anyway, I don't like Initial D because it's totally inaccurate. You figure an AE86 would get stomped down the Akina, but this guy manages to win every time.

If I watched Initial D because I thought it was accurate, I'd have some serious issues. Most entertainment is fun because it is somewhat implausibile, anime is no different for me. But, that's off topic. So is this: Matlab Rules. :D

MATLAB satisfies my plotting needs. :)

The mechanical engineer in me has to give a thumbs down to Initial D. I'm sure someone here thinks my opinion stinks of pigshit.

I've been watching all of Wolf's Rain, and I can't get enough of it. I finally had the chance to see all of the Inuyasha episodes. I'm not spoiling the ending. You'll just have to figure it out for yourselves.

What do you ID fans think will happen at the end of the series?

An opinion is an opinion, I have no clue why people would ever get offended by one.

Check out Bleach. Bleach is awesome.

I think Takumi will die in an enormous fireball going over a cliff in a last ditch, completely unorthodox method to winning his final race. Hey, he'll get to the bottom first at least...

If you're up for super cute/insane anime about ninja, check out "2x2 Shinobuden." It's about an incompetent ninja and her insane clan. It's really funny and confusing and I think it promotes smoking and drug abuse. :p

I got the DeathSquad ones, they're pretty high quality and the subs are pretty accurate. Sometimes they're off by a little bit, but considering everything I think they're the best.

My friends don't like dubbed either, I never understood that... I'm an anime buff too but I'd rather have it dubbed... yeah yeah, I know that the dubs never sound nearly as good as the original, but in the end of the day... why do you watch anime? to appreciate the art and watch an enjoyable story?..... or to read subtitles? At least when its dubbed, it alows you to do what you wanted to do to in the first place....take in the story and appreciate the art....rather than trying to read some fast moving subtitles.

If I wanna read something, I'll read a book

Fair point, but the dubbed versions I've seen were cut to hell, and all the engine sounds were replaced with V8's... Even the rotaries... Go figure...
