truemagellen 09-21-2004, 08:40 AM I thought you'ed enjoy this...I love the last line...classic!
Motorcyclist clocked at 205 mph on Hwy. 61
Associated Press
Published September 21, 2004
WABASHA, Minn. -- With a State Patrol airplane overhead, a Stillwater motorcyclist hit the throttle and possibly set the informal record for the fastest speeding ticket in Minnesota history: 205 mph.
On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61.
When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be 205 mph.
``I was in total disbelief,'' Loney told the St. Paul Pioneer Press for today's editions. ``I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast.''
Several law enforcement sources told the newspaper that, although no official records are kept, it was probably the fastest ticket ever written in the state.
After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward.
The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license - and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph.
A search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County.
Tilley did not return calls from the newspaper to his home Monday. A working number for him could not immediately be found by The Associated Press today.
Only a handful of exotic sports cars can reach 200 mph, but many high-performance motorcycles can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can hit 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said.
Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death at 200 mph.
``I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour,'' Swanson said. ``But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure.''
takahashi 09-21-2004, 08:49 AM LOL
I am reading an Option Japan mag saying a grandfather drives his car at 280 km/h don't know which car though (did not say)
smrx8 09-21-2004, 08:49 AM yikes i hit 148 on my bike and i thought i was crazy
OneEvilRx8 09-21-2004, 09:12 AM i don't care what kind of protective clothes you are wearing if you hit anything at 205mph, you are DEAD.... botton line
Evil
well...if you're wearing leathers...your gonna slide until something, which on the open road is inevitable, hits you...it would be very nasty but death is certain...that is CRAZY fast...
i don't think i ever hit over 160 on my bike and that was at a track in Atlanta...and it's VERY different on a bike...
those are the guys that give motorcyclists bad raps...he's lucky the arrest is all that happened...
Nemesis8 09-21-2004, 10:05 AM Everything's a blurr at those speeds on a superbike. I did 150 on my 750 Seca once - scarred the crap out of me. Then I took my brother-in-laws 1100 out for a mild 165 romp - Needless to say, I sold the bike shortly there after. I'm beyond my glory days of thrill riding...
shigginsrx8 09-21-2004, 10:06 AM wow, that is just dumb. There are far too many unknowns on a public road to be riding like that.
devoid 09-21-2004, 10:10 AM I'd contest the ticket. Site, angle, human error, etc, to many variables...it wasn't radar or laser...thus its extremely fallible. (even radar and laser are very fallible!) Even if he was...if I were him, I'd still contest! :D Besides, I'm sure guiness is gonna want some info!
shigginsrx8 09-21-2004, 10:14 AM If i was a judge and this kid contested, i would beat him with my gavel.
devoid 09-21-2004, 10:17 AM ^^^ Then he'd surely win! :D
truemagellen 09-21-2004, 10:17 AM maybe he was trying to be Marty Mcfly and go back in time...oh wait Devoid can help us with that...let me borrow your Delorian for a few hours :)
cortc 09-21-2004, 10:33 AM I have done 172 on a slightly modified 929rr on a closed road and you definitely get tunnel vision at that speed, 205 is completely insane...

I thought I already let you borrow it, and you brought it back before you borrowed it? :D
PS - DeLorean
smrx8 09-21-2004, 11:57 AM i wonder what an r6 tops out of
My hubby will be so proud it was a Honda. Then I'm sure we'd both want to slap the guy into next week. What a maroon.
shigginsrx8 09-21-2004, 01:47 PM i wonder what an r6 tops out of
I have would think it would be around 155-160 mph range.
the_glassman 09-21-2004, 01:58 PM The bike isn't even capable of those speeds unless it was modified.
shigginsrx8 09-21-2004, 02:10 PM I just looked it up in one of my mags and they say 155mph (250km/h)
smrx8 09-21-2004, 02:32 PM [QUOTE=the_glassman]The bike isn't even capable of those speeds unless it was modified.[/Qi
guess you dont know much about bikes i did 145 on my stock gsxr 600.

I probably know more about bikes then you do. I hope you bike knowledge and skills are better then you forum posting skills.
I never said bikes can't be fast, and 145 mph isn't fast by any standard, I said that bike isn't capable of that speed stock without modifications.
well isn't that kind of obvious?!...any bike achieving speed like that has to be modified...
smrx8 09-21-2004, 02:46 PM you must be talking out your rear i hit 145 on my bike AND ITS ( STOCK) !!. and for gods sake who would not know a bike can be faster with modifications. for someone who posted the bike is not capable of reaching that speed you sure know alot.ask anyone who has an r6 snd see how fast they are,i drop my case

I guess for smrx8 had trouble understanding my first post. Surely it's not that hard to read? For that bike to sustain a speed of 205 mph, it would have to have some pretty serious modifications. There are turbo Busa's that a barely faster then that. This bike is a)not a busa b)not a ZX-12R

Go back and read my post. May I recommend Hooked on Phonics (http://www.hop.com). I'm well aware of the capabilities of YZF-R6, because I've owned one! I've also raced plenty of them in my car on the highway.
truemagellen 09-21-2004, 03:13 PM calm down people...this is a fun thread
cortc 09-21-2004, 04:01 PM Stock 04 Honda 600rr top speed is 162.2 mph and the top speed on the new 04 1000rr is 176mph stock...
For a 1000rr to hit 205mph, it would need some major modifications including an exhaust, computer, intake mods, gears and some form of power enhancement such as nitro or FI...
shigginsrx8 09-21-2004, 04:10 PM Just incase anyone missed it:
This was asked
i wonder what an r6 tops out of
To which I replied
I have would think it would be around 155-160 mph range.
Chaos insued
emailists 09-21-2004, 06:50 PM Regarding tunnelvision, why does this occur? I know approaching the speed of light this will happen, but why at under 200 MPH? Is it a physiological effect as oppososed to a physics based effect?
dude...you're on a BIKE...hell when i hit 130, it was tunnel vision..when I got to 160 I was freakin out by that time...you can't freaking move your head hardly at that speed..and you have to use peripheral vision...it's nuts...
Can you read? Go back and read my post. May I recommend Hooked on Phonics (http://www.hop.com).

...not to be a DICK or anything...BUT....your like the pot calling the kettle black...
smrx8 09-21-2004, 09:41 PM i gave up on him xero, anyways what kind of bike you got xero , i have a 2003 r6 rides great.
rotaryxlr8 09-22-2004, 12:00 AM Sorry but R6 got beat by GSX-R600 in '04 for middleweight bike of the year. Maybe they'll make a come back in '05 with slight increase in horsepower. I don't think it'll present a threat though consider what I have on my gixxer. Pretty though.
D MENAC 7 09-22-2004, 01:31 AM Oh for Pete's sakes, will you guys just quit your pissing match? BOT (back on topic or for the phonetically challenged, Bak On Top Ik :D)
205 MPH. If he hit the pavement, he would be about a 1/2 mile long grease spot on the road as he would be ground up like Jimmy Hoffa through a leaf shredder. SAK (that's Stoo-Pid Ass Kid for you who are HOP)

i use to have a 2002 gsx r600 and it handled great but not enough power. my r6 from what i can tell feels more torquey and faster on top end ,but it does not handle as good as my gixxer .
rx8daniel 09-22-2004, 07:33 AM Either way - he was fast. And stupid. And I think he was a Burgundy!

I hit around 180 before ..... but
I hit 140 around june and crashed before on my motorcycle ..... it hurt, but I was unharmed with protective gear ... it does wonders , trust me , I don't know about 205 tho .... sounds like that'd hurt ALOT more.
Either way - he was fast. And stupid. And I think he was a Burgundy
Burgundy.....maroon.....hehehe.......Bugs Bunny would be mortified.
mysql101 09-22-2004, 06:31 PM Here is his ticket.
Speed-ER doc 09-22-2004, 06:43 PM His defense should be that his bike obviously cannot go that fast, therefore the ticket is invalid.
alnielsen 09-22-2004, 07:10 PM $215 for that speeding ticket, worth it for the bragging rights.
rjplunk9 09-22-2004, 09:10 PM Only $215 dollars. Damn, either thats cheap or my friend got screwed. He got a $263 ticket for going 63mph when the speed limit was 40.
Ellar 09-22-2004, 09:25 PM In New York, if you're caught going over 90 MPH, it's an automatic revocation. At least I *think* that's still true. It was definately true when I first got my license.
Rxdriftingaction 09-22-2004, 09:37 PM 205mph... he/she is awesome
BlueEyes 09-22-2004, 09:41 PM No he is an idiot.
I would think this would be a definite liscence suspension. Maybe even Jail time.
mspeed11 09-27-2004, 07:25 PM i hit 180 in my stelth r/t and it was very crazy! by the time i got the car back under 100 i was three lanes over to the right and very sogy:D it was on the belt way in houston near 45. a supra and i both went threw the ez-tag at like 160 and i swer we wer 200 yards past the ez-tag when the flash went off, i could see it in the rear vew:D
