View Full Version : What's the Deal with Drifting??
wakeech 04-18-2003, 02:56 PM ...Wigggles linked up to a video showing a bunch of very capable drivers racing around a track, even head to head, with the tails of their cars hanging out... the front wheels with 30degrees of negative camber on them, compeletely ruined tyres going on the back... even computer animations of a car swinging the tail around as close as it can to the edge of a cliff... even new member hikoboy is asking questions and wants to get into it... what's it all about??
i mean, i saw the RX-7 and Skyline racing in Wiggles' video, and it's soooo obvious that if the RX-7 went around the track "the right way" he'd have handily kicked its ass... what's up with the drifting?? i know there are competitions to see who can keep it the most sideways for the longest, hanging out the passenger side door or something, but the racing too?? it seems just silly to me...
...it's one of those things that "i just don't get"... F1, touring, dirt sports, motocycles, drag, and yes, even recently "Stock Car" (NASCAR oval-track stuff) racing i "get" (although i don't really enjoy oval track stuff... just boring), but drifting i still don't...
can someone help me "get it", or explain "what it's all about"???
Toadman 04-18-2003, 02:59 PM It's more of a precision ballet rated on style points and not lap times. I think it developed from rally racing, and Japan has made it a favorite event. It's tougher than you think to keep the car balanced perfectly in a drift on asphalt. Very tough on equipment and tires.
wakeech 04-18-2003, 03:00 PM ...yeah, okay, but why??
...and i dont' mean "why is it difficult"... i mean, why in the first place would you??
Hercules 04-18-2003, 03:15 PM I think once you know how to control it properly there is little more to give you satisfaction driving the car :P

haven't you heard the story of the legendary tofu car? :p ;)
AsianStyle 04-18-2003, 03:47 PM If you want to see what the drifting hype is all about go watch Initial D haha.

...uh,no, tell me...
and this Initial D, is it an anime i can get from Blockbuster, or what??
hikoboy 04-18-2003, 03:53 PM have you gone to driftsession.com? it tells you some of the techniques of drifting. it all begins with the heel and toe... but anyway, i think the reason why i want to learn how to drift is because i just think it's plain awesome. i was always fascinated when i was about 8 and had rc cars and took them outside in the winter time, placed them on ice and just let it go sideways. i dunno....it just gives me satisfaction haha. probably just an individual thing. and it's also kinda scary...and it's exciting. like riding a roller coaster. and if i were to get myself into some skid, then i'd be more likely to be able to correct myself without scaring the crap out of me.
but no, i'm not going to be drifting on an everyday basis on a local road. and i'm not going to time myself how long i can stay sideways, but just take a corner in a controlled fashion without really slowing down. it's just something that i'll feel confident about knowing that i can. and if there's a place i can do it, then i'll have fun doing it.
have you watched some best motoring vids where they test drifting abilities? i have one of the rx7 drifting in the mountains. i have one of the s2000 too, they're both awesome.
AsianStyle 04-18-2003, 03:58 PM I dunno if you can rent it from blockbuster b/c most blockbuster anime == crap haha, I guess not too many people rent anime from there. If you can find a store that deals with foreign video games or just normal movie stores but usually anime dvds go for 30bux per 4-6 episodes which is pretty expensive but Im sure they will have it. I highly recommend the anime very entertaining haha.
chenpin 04-18-2003, 04:05 PM If you have a fast connection, I reccomend just downloading it off kazaa or something. It's all fan subbed.
AsianStyle 04-18-2003, 04:25 PM Yea, I would have recommended fan subs off of winmx, kazaa, etc.. but because the anime is pretty old I'm not sure many people will have it. I just did a search on Winmx and came up with couple results, but all of them seem to be 2nd stage or 3rd stage. You don't want to start watching the series in the middle. Try to find 1st stage on winmx or kazaa.

lmao!!!
DORIFFFTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
People drift cause it looks awesome. Also, in some events like Rally, it's useful for smoothing out the motions of the car.
As far as Initial D goes, it rocks. Here's a server with the first 2 stages and the 3rd movie and the extra stage. Knock yourself out. :)

chenpin 04-19-2003, 12:15 AM Is a 4th stage coming out any time soon? The manga is still being written right? So the story hasn't "ended" yet?
AsianStyle 04-19-2003, 01:55 AM Yea, I heard the 4th stage is due out shortly but not sure when. Thats an awesome link with the first 2 stages of initial D I think you should make a new thread with the link being the main subject so other rx8 forum members can enjoy the great anime series!
