MarkRx 04-15-2003, 02:13 PM Wasn't there a wankel powered motorcycle built back in the 60's or something ? I think it was called a Norton commander. Then there was the Suzuki RE-5 in the mid 70's. Lensman 04-15-2003, 02:35 PM Suzuki RE5 (http://www.allenmuseum.com/suzuki_re5.htm) Not quite right on the date for the Norton. (http://www.monito.com/wankel/norton.html) Schneegz 04-15-2003, 07:18 PM I've been wanting to build a rotary powered motorcycle for years! I mentioned before the 1.3L engine in the Suzuki Hayabusa. It's an amazing engine, generating more than 180hp and 100lb-ft of torque. But compare that to the Renesis, 250hp and 165lb-ft of torque out of 1.3L. Sport bike engines need to be small, light and high-revving, with a superior hp/L ratio when compared to that of a car engine. Sounds like a rotary engine to me! RacingDynamcs 04-23-2003, 07:57 PM if you do some intense online searching you will find that someone did make a rotary engine biker and it reved to 18k pretty impressive... Schneegz 04-24-2003, 03:31 AM RacingDynamics: I already knew about rotary motorcycles built in the 70's and 80's by Suzuki and Norton. However, those bikes couldn't really compete with sport bikes of their day, for whatever reason. I'd like to see a 1000cc sport bike built with a rotary engine AND a world-class modern frame, suspension, brakes etc. so it could truly compete with the GSX-R1000 and R1. RobDickinson 04-24-2003, 03:36 AM Norton made some rotary Bikes in the late 80's early/mid 90's Used to race them in the 750cc class (at 600cc). Done quite well.
