View Full Version : Anyone watch the history channel last night?

Last night on the series Modern Marvels on the History Channel they re-broadcast the Engine episode (which I missed in march).
One small segment was on the rotary engine! It was very cool! They interviewed Kenichi Yamamoto who was in charge of developing Mazda's rotary program from the start. He talked about meeting Felix Wankel a few years before he died and how Felix felt like Kenichi's proud father watching his son carry on his work. It was very touching. They also mentioned the RX-8 and showed a red RX-Evolv and it's hood opening (remember the clam shell?). Everyone they talked to had good things to say about the rotary.

Maybe I should order that one from the History Channel.

Here is a link to the History Channel store if anyone is interested. The Description doesn't mention the Rotary Engine, but it’s in there. The actual segment is probably 3-5 minutes.

I have never heard of a show that was just about the rotary. If it's out there someone tell me so I can buy it.

That would rule! I would love to watch a special all about rotories. That would totally reek of awesomeness.

My FTP server is still up from the CDROM ISO... greatly appreciated if you can upload it... and it'll be available for download for at least a couple of weeks from there.

ftp.fsck.co.uk
username "rx8"
password "mazda"

You can only write into the incoming directory.

Should be reasonably fast as I have 1Meg of bandwidth.

Is there a remote directory address I should be using? I keep getting a "Socket Error: no DNS entry"...

Thanks,

Jim

Hmmm... mabe my DNS is screwed... use 80.2.190.202 instead of ftp.fsck.co.uk...

Actually... I'm not sure what you're getting... is that a remote error??? you need to put the file in the incoming directory.

Okay, it's on there. Enjoy you guys. :D

Hugh?

I thought it was an AVI file.. not a flash thing? do you have the AVI? Otherwise MAC and Linux users will have to use an emulator to play it.

Anyway, in the mean time... if somone wants it, feel free to download it.

PS. Was it a bogus error because you weren't using the incoming dir, or did it really have DNS problems?

NOTA V6
08-13-2002, 12:07 PM
Nope. No .avi. since it's not a video. ;) The files are straight off the interactive disc. They need to be saved into the same folder on your computer for them to work properly. Everything but the wallpaper should work. The wallpaper is available on the web anyway though...

The disc says "Recommended system requirements for CD content: 64 MB free RAM, Win 95/98/2000/ME/XP or MAC OS 8.0 or higher, 500 MHz processor".

The error was cured by the use of the 80.2.190.202 address. It wouldn't even let me in to see the incoming dir using the ftp.fsck.co.uk addy. I'd say you have a real DNS issue going on...

Now I'm really confused... Didn't you say...

>I have the rotary bit edited out of the hour long show in .avi format, but the friggin' server won't let me upload it.

You seem to have uploaded 10 megs of a 35 meg presentation which is on the CD iso that I'm already hosting! I thought you were uploading the AVI you talked about?

NOTA V6
08-13-2002, 01:30 PM
Umm... I guess I have too many upload projects going on at once. ;p

Okay, I'll upload the video of the History Channel thing. ;) That is in .avi format. :D

Sorry for the mixup all. But if BlueAdept is willing to host the RX-8 CD stuff, it's already there and ready to DL. :)

Done deal. Enjoy it all everyone. :)

Errr... that's great, but only 10% of it seems to be there.... perhaps there's somthing wrong with the FTP server since the other file was truncated... but I got the whole of the CD ISO intact and several people have downloaded it... can you have another go, and if not I'll set up an FTP server on a different network...

The ISO of the CD will stay there for the forseeable future... unless it starts to really eat my bandwidth, but I can't see that.

NOTA V6

Okay! < deep breath >

I think I got it all on there this time. :D It just took me a really loooong time to upload. I can't do video on my ISP hosting space, so I guess I am just not used to it taking 10 minutes to upload a 2 minute video. ;)

BTW I deleted the partial file in the incoming directory. :)

Thanks for hosting this stuff BlueAdept. :)

I'm gonna check out my DNS and perhaps move it to a web server.... but my working web server is hosted at an ISP where I have a traffic limit... and my home web server has fallen victim to a new motherboard which was DOA... so it'll take a while to sort that out... in the mean time it's there on FTP for anyone to download... abuse the bandwidth to your hearts content as it's not gonna upset anyone there.

Thanks, and please... anyone who wants this... download and enjoy. It's short, and won't tell you anything you don't already know if you're a rotary nut... but it's still WAY COOL... if anyone finds any info about the complete program about the Wankel Engine mentioned above... let me know... mabe we can get a bulk discount! LOL.

Incidentally... the flash thing off the CD does work under WINE, incase anyone was wondering, although the sound gets a little confused in a couple of points.

?

I have the complete "Modern Marvels" show in question on .avi as well. The file is 260,256KB and about an hour long. It starts off with steam engines and the like and runs through the history of engines. The snippet I uploaded was the entire rotary bit. Interesting, but the rotary part is really the best. If you want it on the same server, I can upload it, but I'd better start tonight, 'cause it will take about 8 hours to upload. ;)

Hey NOTA V6,
Is there anyway you can separate the portion of that show that is dedicated to the rotary engine from the rest of it? If there is, could you post that? That would be great.
I still have a dial-up connection, so there is no way I could download a file as large as the whole show.

I meant that somone hinted there was a complete documentary somwhere entirely on the Wankel... Well worth keeping an eye out for that one... I'd buy a DVD of that in ha heartbeat.

I doubt it's worth uploading the whole of a show about general engines... as people would only want to download it again!!!

I guess big brother IS watching.... since that clip was downloaded by somone from ford!

I hope they see how keen we are for this sort of thing. It strikes me that there MUST have been a longer program on this topic to justify the interviews we saw sections of...... Where is it guy's, we wanna BUY it!.

NOTA V6

You need a DivX player...

http://www.divx.com/

:)

BlueAdept
08-15-2002, 07:48 PM
You will need a DIVX codec....

I recomend the ffdshow codec as it's able to play many different mpeg4 based streams and is only 10% of the size (Download time) of the regular DiVX codec.

Get it here:-

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow/ffdshow-20020617.exe?download

Or go to the project homepage here:-

http://cutka.szm.sk/ffdshow/

Otherwise you could always go to the divx homepage... www.divx.com I think.

hah! success! i was sceptical of the divx because in the past i couldn't get it to run. the problem was i couldn't get the codec to download. this time it came all bundled together. thanks everybody for the help and for sharing hosting the vid. now if mazda just leaves the hood to open that way i'll be a really happy camper:D

Which codec did you use in the end... the genuine divx one or the ffdshow...

zoom44
08-16-2002, 03:59 PM
genuine divx. it didn't take very long, this dsl hookup im on at work is like lightning. i downloaded the divx first and saw the codec bundled into it so i didn't have to try the other one.
