View Full Version : How do you come to a stop (Manual Tranny only)? khoney 04-11-2003, 07:18 PM Seemed from the discussion thread that a new poll is warranted. Let's find out how people bring their MT vehicles to a stop. zoom44 04-11-2003, 07:30 PM i let the engine (applying some brakes as well. more or less depending on the conditions and how quickly i need to stop) slow the car down until the revs get fairly low, then i shift to the next gear down. when i get it down low in 2nd gear i shift into first, leave the clutch in and brake the rest of the way to a stop. i leave it in gear with the clutch in while coming to a stop in case i need to swerve or something to avoid an accident. Donny Boy 04-11-2003, 08:07 PM There should be a third option, both brakes and down shifting. And don't forget, bringing ones vehicle to a stop by using the vehicle in front of you. DTECH-RX 04-11-2003, 08:56 PM As for coming to a stop.....I shift into neutral and coast to a stop using the brakes (in general). This is sometimes dependent on the traffic situation, but in either case, like I said before, the right gear is only a flick of the wrist away, if the traffic ahead of you starts to move, the light changes, or any other traffic situation arises. billdo 04-11-2003, 09:07 PM I usually start by hitting the brakes, that seems to work most of the time. If that fails to do the job, using the car in front of you also has a slowing effect, as mentioned earlier in the thread. Nah, just put it in neutral and slow down like an auto, its not fancy or anything, but it works. Mako 04-12-2003, 12:32 AM Neutral and breaks, usually neutral a fair bit before brakes depending of course on the situation. This is comming to a stop mind you, a major downhill is a whole different story. . . lefuton 04-12-2003, 02:52 AM i downshift to 2nd and then use just the brake to go from 15-0mph in neutral. i never sit at a light in 1st with the clutch down. rxeightr 04-12-2003, 07:43 AM Neutral, then pump the brakes. I've learned that helps keep the heat build-up off of the brakes, and does not warp the rotors. Toadman 04-12-2003, 10:12 AM Heel-and-toe. :D |
