View Full Version : Where do you put your cell phone?
8_wannabe 08-30-2004, 06:50 PM Sorry if this has been asked; I couldn't find a similar thread with Search.
Just wondering where everyone puts their cell phone while driving. Please refrain from sermons about talking while driving -- I've heard all that. I don't charge my phone in the car, and don't have a mount. The only convenient place I can find to keep it in case it rings while driving is in my cup holder which, of course, sux if I want to put a drink there. Anyone found any good alternative?

SilverTrigger 08-31-2004, 04:11 AM Sunglass holder
robertdot 08-31-2004, 06:16 AM Usually my pocket, where I leave it most of the time. Unless I think I'll need it (e.g. for the directions I wrote down), then my cup warmer with the top shut (cause I hate when my arm falls in).
shelleys_man_06 08-31-2004, 06:30 AM In my backpack. I dread picking it up while I'm driving. I don't want to look like a bumbling soccer mom while in my 8.
marcj1 08-31-2004, 06:46 AM First cupwarmer (lid closed, ala robertdot) or pants pocket (with hands-free--I'm not coordinated enough to work the shifter and the phone).
Buckeye3d 08-31-2004, 08:06 AM I put it in the oven...aka the drink holder with the lid closed. :)
huhsler 08-31-2004, 09:52 AM Walmart and other places sell these little padded magnets with adhesive backing. I put one next to the shifter and my phone just sits on it. I can even use the speakerphone on it if I need to. I'll do pics when I can.

damn, my situation verbatim.
Like Whoa 08-31-2004, 05:12 PM I put my phoneclip where the visor is and then i clip my phone in. its pretty convenient because when it rings i can see my phone flashing all diffrent colors (my music is always loud) hers a picture
Mr. Ed's rx-8 08-31-2004, 06:19 PM i took out the actual ashtray insert and my phone fits in there where i can see the screen...i have the samasung digicam phone so its pretty small.
otherwise it sits in my lap where i forget about it when i exit the car thereby turning it into an exspensive projectile to the concrete!
rx8cited 08-31-2004, 09:03 PM On the passenger's seat - phone off!
red_rx8_red_int 08-31-2004, 09:28 PM I have the red/black interior and my wife found a red/black clip on soda can holder at walmart. It clips on to the passenger side center vent. I keep my phone and parking garage access card in it. I'll try to remember to take pics.
eclps0 08-31-2004, 09:37 PM I put my phone ( Samsung A530) under my crotch on vibrate. I put my phone under my crotch so i know if someone calls, funny story i was driving with my dad in the car and i was having a serious convo and all of sudden i jumped because my phone vibrated. ( my dads reaction was he was jumping and panicking because he thought something happned..lol
robertdot 08-31-2004, 09:45 PM I used put mine there, too. One day, I watched how bad it made my computer monitor fizzle when it rings and at "random" intervals when it seems to check for things. I decided I'd rather it be doing that to my left thigh than my testicles...
But it still ends up there after I talk on it, when I occasionally talk while driving (but I hate every second of it).

zelig2 09-01-2004, 11:33 PM In October I'll be getting the Moto V710 from Verizon. With that I'll also get the systems from Qubit and Parrot so that I can just leave my cell phone in my pocket. Then when I sit in the car it instantly via bluetooth connects to the parrot system and will answer calls over the 8's stereo. Can't wait to get it all working.
8_wannabe 09-02-2004, 12:22 AM Awesome ideas, gang. Thanks for the great feedback. I will investigate a few of these solutions, esp the bluetooth/Qubit thing and kuda-phonebase. I might end up with a bluetooth phone with wireless earpiece, then I can just hide the phone in the sliding storage bin behind the cupwarmer and leave it there.

I've got the Nokia 3650 + one version (either 3620 or 3660 depending what part of the world you live in). The bluetooth handsfree kit is not worth ~100$
I've got static when I was in Alabama with the phone in my right pocket and piece on my left ear. I've had long-term (over 20 mins) connection problems with it in Los Angeles.
Wired is the way to go, unless you find a better solution.
mikeb 09-02-2004, 07:45 PM I use the ash tray when its not charging
and the cup holder when its charging
I hate both of these locations
I bought one of those things that sticks to your phone and the dashboard but there is no good places in the rx8 for this --all the areas all too rounded to stick a flat piece
David Wiggins 09-02-2004, 11:36 PM Then I let the handsfree take care of figuring out where the phone is when I get a call.
I don't have a NAV system, so I used the CAVERN underneath the dash to mount the Nokia CK-1W bluetooth kit. "Industrial Strength" Velcro holds the brain in place on top of the HVAC ducts, the speaker is zip tied to the easily removable metal piece under the steering column (the one that has a piece of trim over it and then 4 screws to pull.)
Microphone is attached to the dash w/ Loctite brand "Plastix" CA adhesive. I drilled a cable diameter hole in the panel while I had it out, cut the mic cable, threaded it thru, and attached the mic to the panel. Then, I soldered the cable back together and insulated it w/ a little E-tape. I used hot glue to attach the mic cable on both sides of the splice to the underside of the dash panel, as a strain relief. Now, if something were to tug on the cable, the hotglue would take the initial impact instead of my solder joint.
The little remote button is attached to the center console w/ more Plastix CA. I disassembled the remote button and desoldered the wires, threaded thru from the underside, and reattached the wires to the remote, and reassembled it. In case you're wondering why I didnt do the same w/ the mic, I tried, but it was not cooperative w/ my disassembly attempts.
The 4 wire harness to the car runs down to the cable bundle that attaches to the back of the radio module. I used 3M cable splices to pick up +12, ground, and switched +12 (ignition sense). Then, I searched for a wire on the "mute" pin on the radio, and found none, so I stripped back a little of the wire on the Nokia harness, and just shoved the wire into the appropriate hole in the connector, and e-taped it to the bundle.
Upon reassembly and testing, I found that my mute lead hack worked, so... YAY.
Now, when I get a call, my radio mutes, and the Nokia kit speaker starts playing whatever annoying mp3 I've currently selected as a ringer (usually duelling banjos) until I punch the button on the remote. The outer ring of the remote is a volume control for the handsfree kit. When I'm done w/ the call, punch the button and the phone ends the call, and the radio comes back on.
The mute lead is NOT cool enough to actually make the display say 'MUTE' while it's activated, but it otherwise works perfectly.
3 hours work, including the trip to Lowes to grab the Velcro and the CA glue.

huhsler 09-03-2004, 08:49 AM Well, that last post and DIY makes my little effort look pretty pathetic. However, here are my photos of the "button" magnet and how I wired up my speakerphone. Enjoy!
I'm going to buy motorola's new phone that is blutooth ready. It is totaly hands free. Put the phone on visor - wear blutooth ear piece - never touch the phone! You can dial out using voice for names or numbers and answer without thouching the phone. You can even go into camera mode by voice command. Phone is about $300 and ear piece around $80 Very cool
zelig2 09-03-2004, 03:55 PM i'm wearing a head set for the time being until I get the moto bluetooth phone in october. But from that point I'm installing a car kit so I don't have to use one anymore and it'll just use my car stereo.
RedRenisis 09-03-2004, 04:18 PM I put my Nextel i530 in the ashtray and the cupholder, although I dont like the fact the phone gets warm on both places, probably gonna do the handsfree soon, but I'd rather be driving then talking on the phone, unless of course a pretty young thing is on the other end.
robertdot 09-03-2004, 05:14 PM I've got the Nokia 3620 (aka 3660 if you are outside of the US). It has bluetooth, so I bought the bludetooth headset from Nokia for $100. It worked fine for a little while, then one day I was getting static with the phone in my left pocket and the piece on my right ear. After I got to California, I couldn't keep the devices pared for more than a few minutes. Needless to say, my experience wasn't that good with this setup. I might try again later when I'm not so jaded by it. But for now, I just avoid talking or use the loudspeaker function on my phone.
8_wannabe 09-03-2004, 11:41 PM By the way, take a look at this page (http://www.freeheadset.org/). They're giving away free head sets, no joke. You just pay for shipping. Far as I can tell, there's no catch; it's a public safety thing. These are wired, not wireless, but hey they're free.
//edit// Got the headset a few weeks ago, for both me and my son. There is no gimmick and no catch. Get a free headset from these folks.
Omicron 09-04-2004, 12:52 PM Mine (Motorola T720) lives in the driver's door pocket, turned off.
BomberNYC 09-05-2004, 09:50 AM i put my charger in the back poweroutlet plug and extend the chord thru to the cup holder. i think thats where your suppose to put your cell phone charger cuz if you notice, there is a little hole when you close the lid just big enuff to put a wire thru.

twisty7867 09-15-2004, 06:50 PM If I am expecting a call, I set it on top of the steering wheel (in the well where the speedo/tach are), that way the blinking red light is visible (since I can't hear the ringer over the blaring stereo). Otherwise, I put it in the cup holder, which I just use for CDs anyways since it's worthless for cups with the 6MT.

antichristpm 09-16-2004, 11:49 AM I have a Treo 600 which is hard to find anything for but these guys have mounts for practically everything. Here's a pict of what I have (minus my Treo specific mount bracket).

huhsler 09-16-2004, 02:46 PM Wow. Surprising that they support an RX-8. ProClip has always been partial to domestic cars in the past.
Anyhoo, I'd made up a mount just like that previously. However, it's just a wee bit too far to push those tiny Treo 600 keys correctly. The hard buttons, especially need a surprising amount of force. Check out my earlier post in this thread regarding magnetic buttons.
I even ran the power and speakerphone inputs through the cup holder area, so no real loose wires.
NEWireless 09-17-2004, 09:19 AM This is cheap and functional.
umm, 4 pages and nobody just wears it on their belt?
keyek 09-20-2004, 07:35 PM Last time I used the belt clip I broke the antenna off my motorola....I just bought a velcro shoulder strap thingy (like a MazdaSpeed shoulder pad) that has two pouches-one cig pack size and one cell sized at KMart for $8.00. Since hardly anyone rides when I drive it's working well. Mine's black and silver- so it matches my interior well. Not the best, but keeping the phone in my cupholder kept me from using either one cause it was always getting in the way.
NineT4 09-29-2004, 03:22 AM In the little gap between the drivers seat and the center console, just in front of the seatbelt connecter. I have the Kyocera 7135, so its a larger phone. Smaller phones might fall through. I also have a charger plugged into the rear console power outlet, and run the cord to the cup warmer. This is where I place it if I forgot to charge the phone over night.
ONOFIVEO 10-02-2004, 04:37 PM I've found the perfect solution for me, It's called a Sticky Pad or something like that. (and no I don't work for or no the Sticky Pad guys) It comes in approximately 4x5" sizes. The pads cost about $4.00 at Target and they really work. They hold about anything you sit on them. I didn't believe it until I tried it.
My 8 doesn't have navigation, so I trimmed a sticky pad with scissors to fit on the center console between the gear shifter and armrest. You only need to lift it off every month or so to rinse the dust off of it and it's like new again. Give it a try. At $4, you don't have much to loose. It works for me.
jfischb 11-24-2004, 03:57 PM I use a motorola swivel mount upside so the post clips in from the bottom. I mounted it with a simple toggle bolt in the access plug below the pss airbag. with it upside down it will not be in the way should the airbag be deployed.

jenkins-crew 11-29-2004, 09:55 PM Luck for me I have a small motorola that fits in my visor in one of the squares. Since the visor has holes I can always hear it ring, untill I get my system :)

in my pocket.. w/ bluetooth wireless headset ;)
I actually put mine up behind the steering wheel infront of dash from time to time when I'm waiting on an important call. (I usually just keep it in my pocket and dont pick up while driving).
It fits right to the left of the MPH indicator and doesnt block any gauge readouts, and i can see the LCD light up real easy when a call comes in.

mdekkers 12-02-2004, 02:18 PM in the ashtray - I have the motorola v3 razr, and it fits perfectly, and it's also handy when I need to charge it. I use it with a logitec bluetooth headset.
foxman 12-03-2004, 09:15 AM I got this handy dandy mount at Auto Zone for about 10 bucks that attaches with two sided tape and put it to the dash right behind the turn signal. I use the speakphone function when I can.
Gheist 12-03-2004, 12:37 PM Leave the cell in the cup holder. Have a bluetooth speakerphone which clips onto the driver's sunvisor. That way I can answer all incoming calls. It's a little inconvenient for dialing, but hey, I probably shouldn't be dialing anyway.

Sin,
-PaulPAul, that's got to be the best looking solutin for the Treo600, but it's $30 for the mount (shown) and $30 more for the Treo-holder (or $70 more if you want a holder which swivels with your charging cable).
I don't use it much in the car, but I like to have mine charging with the earpiece plugged in so I can answer it if I must. I dislike having it in the cup-holders and so I'd like a mount so I don't have to let it slide around on the passenger seat (where it inevitably slides far enough to unplug).
Anyone else want to share a cool mounting solution for their Treo?

I gave up on belt loops though and just keep the phone in my pocket - unless I'm driving. I like to use the charger while driving too so it would be nice to have a good mount like antichristpm showed. Something that allows use of charger and headset and holds the phone so I can see the touch-screen.
If the best mounting solution is $100 I'd probably be happier in the long run to upgrade my (non-BlueTooth) Treo600 to a Treo700 and get the BlueTooth headset. Then I could have the Treo charging in the center console while I drive.

I will post some pictures of my own later tonight. I just hooked up G-Force with one the other day and he LOVES it.

gregg 07-24-2006, 10:19 PM I've been using Proclip for a couple years and in my 8 for 3 months. Awesome solution and I wish I could have gotten it for the discount offered above.
At any rate, the only thing I didn't like is it doesn't include a charging solution as I can't stand having the cig lighter dc charger for my blackberry. I fixed that this weekend by 'dis-assembling' the dc charger and direct wiring a cable from behind the cig ligther up behind the proclip mount to my b(i used the guts of the dc charger to downconvert the 12v to 5v [usb standard]). Only thing I need now is a 'left-angle' usb cable to make the plug less auspicious.

Nice tip on the direct wire gregg - I hadn't thought of that. Did you pull the cig lighter out the front or reach in through the back? I'm an EE so the soldering/crimping/whatever is no problem. I just hate fighting to take apart plastic stuff without breaking it.

Cool-Blue-Dad 07-26-2006, 12:46 PM Got this kit at the dollar store. Maybe after I get a new phone I'll go for one of the fancier setups. :)Yeah, simple is good and cheap is good - but if you carry a PDA you would love to upgrade to a Treo. Then you might want a sturdier mount and so forth. +1 for most economical solution.
Dollar Store inventory is hit-or-miss though. I did shop for some cheap brackets I could glue into place, but nothing was quite right for my somewhat stout Treo.
Personally, I'm the most jealous of the folks who can get their tiny phones into the sun visor or sunglasses case, but I'll never give up my PDA+phone.

Nice tip on the direct wire gregg - I hadn't thought of that. Did you pull the cig lighter out the front or reach in through the back? I'm an EE so the soldering/crimping/whatever is no problem. I just hate fighting to take apart plastic stuff without breaking it.
Hooked from behind; can't tell it's there from the front -

gregg 08-12-2006, 02:07 PM Couple more
bobafpe 09-06-2006, 11:59 AM I put my Samsung cell phone in the ashtray compartment. I removed the ashtray container and put the red plastic screen on the top of the ashtray compartment so at night there is still a red light in the ashtray compartment to illuminate my phone. Removing the ashtray container gives me room to put the phone in and close the door and I can still hear it ring.
Cool-Blue-Dad 09-06-2006, 12:50 PM Pics as requested...Nice - thanks for putting those up there. The bb_connections pic is what I was interesting in seeing. I've not taken apart my console yet. I guess I'll sift for a DIY. :scratchhe It's beginning to seem worth the trouble. I've had the door open on my ashtray for months now, I'd really like to see it closed again (I have such a low frustration tolerance ;) ).
DRKSYDE, I've been using my Pro-Clip for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it. What a fantastic holder. I really appreciate how ruggedly it's mounted. Yeah, it swivels if I want, but it doesn't swing loose, slide or pop off for other handling or regular driving. If I'm stopped I can still reach over and two-hand type a TXT message. Thanks again for hooking me up with the discounted price too.
bobafpe 09-06-2006, 02:29 PM Yeah, I agree. If you can't close the ashtray door, that's not the place for your phone.

COOL BLUE -
Glad you love it! Let me know if you need anything else Cellular related! I am your man!
Easy_E1 09-07-2006, 12:00 AM on my belt above and to the right of my right rear pocket. Right between the seat and seatbelt is where it is.
Cool-Blue-Dad 09-07-2006, 09:24 AM on my belt above and to the right of my right rear pocket. Right between the seat and seatbelt is where it is.Is that a convenient spot? I typically like mine to have the headset plugged in just in case I need it (rare, but there's times).
Personally, convenience aside - I wouldn't wear it there because I wouldn't want the phone crushed between me and the seatbelt in a crash. Perhaps yours is small enough or situated just right so that's not a significant risk, but it's something to consider.
BunnyGirl 09-07-2006, 10:05 AM I just put my phone in the cup holder. I don't talk on it when I am driving anyway but it is handy if there is an emergency.

Actually it fits between the seat belt and the seats right side edge. I can't see it interfering with the seat belt in a crash situation. It is right behind the seat belt latch but it does not touch it. I don't get many calls when I am in the car and if I am expecting one I will take it out and set it in the ashtray.
I appreciate the concern ,,,thank you.
glassetcher 10-10-2006, 05:37 PM Cool-Blue-Dad - Did you find the swivel mount was necessary. The description of the ProClip for the RX-8 says it is angled for proper viewing by the driver. Would the less expensive standard fixed holder work just as well?

Would the less expensive standard fixed holder work just as well?Hi glassetcher - sorry for the long delay to reply.
I dunno about necessary, but I love the swivel base. The ProClip holds the phone in a nice position for a quick glace maximizing eyes-on-road, but just today the setting sun threw a terrible glare on the screen. I just twisted the swivel base a bit and the glare was gone. :worship:
The swivel has an adjusting screw to set the right tightness and you can keep it quite firm because the ProClip arm on the side of the console is sturdy. No vibration, no give - just holds rock solid like it was part of the car. :icon_tup:
It was kinda pricy to get the whole two-piece set-up, but it holds my $500 phone in my $35,000 car, right? Actually, I resisted buying it for almost a year, but Ian did hook me up with an awesome price, charged my credit card and had it drop shipped to me right promptly.
glassetcher 10-12-2006, 06:09 PM Cool-Blue-Dad, thanks for the info. I went ahead and popped for the same thing you have (I think). I may not get it for a week or two - Ian wasn't too sure. I just received the Mazda iPod interface today and will probably install it Saturday. I'm thinking of bringing the connector out of the lighter compartment, which would bring it right below the ProClip holder. What do you think?

I don't have the iPod interface (being that I'm one of 9 people on the planet who still uses a humble Rio instead of an iPod), but I have been aspiring to hard-wire my charging cable into the back of the lighter and run the cord up the side of the console under or along the ProClip arm. I would much prefer to have my lighter-door closed. Perhaps on some warm, sunny NY fall Saturday I'll do that. :hahano:
baseballgenius80 10-13-2006, 10:26 AM Between my legs. As Marky Mark once said, "Feel the vibrations!"
RotorMotor 10-13-2006, 12:25 PM For those of you that don't want a mount and want quick, easy access with the phone in perfect view, I vote eGrips (www.egrips.com).
I was skeptical at first but my buddy got them and these things are awesome. I have a Verizon XV6700 (PDA phone) which is pretty large and heavy. I put the eGrips on and unless I'm really cornering hard (and I do mean HARD) I just stick the phone on the dash or on the console infront of the seat warmer buttons and it DOES NOT MOVE! I can even take clover-leaf freeway onramps at 35-40 and it doesn't budge. Highly recommended.

glassetcher 11-15-2006, 03:50 PM Got it. Installed it. Love it! Although I agree with others that there's not much use having the iPod mounted like that for most people, since the iPod is passive with the Mazda interface, it works for me because I update podcasts each day that i listen to to and form work. It's a lot easier accessing the iPod with this mount than it would be getting into the golve box each day. Besides, it just LOOKS COOL. :smoker:
Zoom, Zoom!

Cool-Blue-Dad 01-04-2007, 12:26 AM Bump for the new forum members. I was really relishing the Pro-Clip while driving all over during the holidays. Many thanks to DRKSYDE for helping me secure a great deal. I thought I had a better pic of my own install -

Oh well, DRKSYDE got some better angles.
Here is the link for the two mounts that are available.

You guys make this way to hard on yourself...
...best place to put your cellphone so you NEVER EVER forget it is on your seatbelt.
For those of you that leave your cell lose in your pockets:
1 - Take phone out of pocket
2 - Get in car
3 - Close door & fasten seatbelt
4 - Open your phone and turn keyguard on
5 - Close phone so that it clamps down onto your seatbelt by your shoulder
No matter how hard you drive, it won't budge from your shoulder. If it rings, the speaker will go off right in your ear. If it's on vibrate, you're GOING to feel it...
For those of you that keep your phones in carrying cases with belt clips:
1 - Unclip from belt/pants/whatever
2 - Get in & buckle up
3 - Clip phone onto seatbelt down by the buckle
Most clips are bulky and rattle, so putting them near your shoulder would either be unconfortable or severely annoying. The phone is out in the open, however, so you have a better chance of hearing it if it rings. If it's on vibrate... well.... you're out of luck then.
You'll never forget it when you get out, and it won't bounce around while you drive.
DaveCM203 01-08-2007, 01:45 PM I have a krazor. Fits perfict in the sunglass holder. gota use it for something since my sunglasses won't fit.
Brettus 01-08-2007, 01:57 PM I use velcro pads - next to the handbrake .
rebelx 01-08-2007, 03:53 PM I put mine in the cup holder or pocket. I have the Motorola Car kit. It will either auto answer or I can hit the blue led button and talk via a mic and speaker. No caller ID display.
i_luv_my_rx8 01-08-2007, 04:05 PM I usually keep it in my purse, or in the center console cup holder.
Cool-Blue-Dad 01-08-2007, 10:44 PM I usually keep it in my purse, or in the center console cup holder. You don't use it at all when you drive? I try to avoid it, but odds catch up with me on longer trips so I like having a suitable cradle to hold the phone in a good position.
i_luv_my_rx8 01-09-2007, 12:05 AM Nope. Unless it's an EMERGENCY I won't call/answer other people's calls when I'm driving. There's nothing that pisses me off more than people driving and gabbing on the phone.
bsteimel 04-30-2009, 09:34 AM I found an interesting new place to stick my cell phone. I used to put it in the ashtray but i got a gauge pod. I was putting it in the cup holder but I kept leaving it in the car all the time. I started putting it between the shifter and the e brake, but it would fall sometimes. It did stay there like 90% of the time though. Then i realized why not put it "in" the e brake. I have a voyager from verizon
MyRXdrug 04-30-2009, 10:33 AM Usually in my inside jacket pocket or front jean pockets, though the latter is hard to get the phone out. I have a blue racing car seat phone holder which I always get compliments on, but the clips are way too short for the 8's airvents. Plus I don't know if my BB Pearl will fit in it.
NACer4lyf 04-30-2009, 11:22 AM i keep mine in between my legs...

DaGnome 05-08-2009, 01:20 PM For my cell phone, I purchased a few Case Logic "Catch All"'s a while back.. you can see them here:
http://www.caselogic.com/automotive_catch_all/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=57170
What's nice is that the hanging clip is bendable and long enough that you can hang them over the door handle/pocket rather easily. It's great for my cell phone and for passenger's keys/sunglasses etc.. I put one on each door.

kpanek 05-10-2009, 03:18 AM I have a blackberry storm... I bought a protective film for it.(invisishield) I actually ended up getting two out of the deal. I found out when you put two pieces together it stick together real securely. So I took the second back piece and applied it right behind the shifter and cup holders. I set my phone there when I drive. It didn't even budge when I slid my 8 into a curb :'(
