Post Two Piece Brake Rotors...

Ok I am down to these two choices and will be ordering befor the end of the week as soon as I recieve final availability and pricing. I am going with two piece rotors to improve performance and reduce unsprung weight even further. The two choices are Project Mu (The Blue Ones...) or Auto Exe (The Red Ones...) they are similar the only real difference is color and manufacturer...

I have decided to go with this option because the factory system is so good and large enough to handle some seriuos driving. Larger rotors just add weight and are not needed so the big brake kits are out... The only other thing I will replace in the future are the stock front calipers, will replace with four piston alumnum ones. I allready have the pads, brake lines and very good quality brake fluid in the car...

Which would you go for? They are priced about the same; 620.00 for the front pair and 600.00 for the rear pair... OEM size and compatible with the stock calipers...

I really have to wonder about bang for the buck. There's gotta be better price/performance items you can buy for $1200.

How much lighter are they than the stock rotors?

Oh...I'd go with the red; the blue look more like turquoise....not a good color.

I'm sold on the AutoExe set myself. I like the red, and think it will look good with my red calipers and the yellow AutoExe Sport Brake Pads. $1200 is a lot, but apparently it's the price you pay for two piece rotors without getting a big brake kit (which would cost more than $1200). Also, cortc, I know a place to get them for a little bit cheaper than JapanParts sells them, plus the shipping costs will be far, far less. PM me if you want details.

$1200 is a bit too much for JDM rotors. Until someone actually gets them and the results are good, I remain skeptical. I'm going to wait another two years for the RX-8 aftermarket to open up.

For 1200 youd hope that the ******* squeak would finally goaway next time you use the brakes.

On a black car? Get the red ones, obviously.

Why not just go straight to the Stoptech 328mm setup? If you spend $1200 on rotors now, and a few hundred more on calipers later, you're most of the way to the $1800 price tag anyway. I bet the Stoptechs even fit under the wheels you have now.

What's the replacement cost for the rotors you're looking at?

cuz $1200 gets me rotors for all four wheels, and $320 gets me AutoExe pads for all four corners as well, all for less than the price for a front big brake kit...if I spend $1700 on Stoptech, or even more for the Rotora or Brembo front kits, then I'm still stuck with the ugly, heavy OEM rear rotors...

I will find the weights, but in the mean time think about this:

The effect of rotating mass is calculated on the radius of the spinning object cubed. In other words, imagine a ring weighing 10 pounds with a 6-inch radius. Now picture a ring that still weighs 10 pounds but has a radius of 12 inches. The bigger ring has twice the radius, so the extra rotating mass is two cubed—that’s eight times more in terms of mass that you are trying to spin up to speed.

Bigger rotors are not always a good thing and the RX8 has brakes that are plenty big enough and very well balanced; so the plan is to loose some weight and improve thermo efficiency...

Yes but those StopTech calipers will not fade even with heavy track use, replacement rotors are relatively cheap and pad choices abound. What you give up in looks you more than gain in performance...

The stock calipers will not fade either, with good pads and fluid the stock setup will not fade at all; it is actually a really good setup... The new rotors along with some brembo 4 piston calipers is the way I will be going... The lighter disk in the rear will also help out... It has nothing to do with price either, Stoptech is fine; I just do not like their setup...

Interesting. What is it about their system that you don't like?

Ok, they are both 1.75lbs lighter than stock (Front) and 1.5lbs (Rear)...

That is 6.5lbs of rotating unsprung weight... Add the 2.75lbs reduction of the titanium lug bolts and the forged light weight lug nuts and that is 9.25lbs...

The new SSRs will further reduce this by about 1.5-2lbs per wheel/tire combo from stock and about 6-8lbs from my current setup...

$300 per corner just for two-piece rotors? That is a little expensive for that, but understandable if it's a JDM sourced item. Another thing you have to consider about aftermarket brake systems are spare parts. If something happens, or when a rotor wears down (or wears badly, as in getting a very bad groove in it), how long will it take to get another? Are the rotors a special order item, or are they something like off-the-shelf Wilwood rotors that you can get from several parts suppliers?

For weight concerns, a decent brake kit should also include much lighter calipers, even if it doesn't offer more braking force. And the weight difference between one stock and one good aftermarket caliper is normally more than the weight difference between all four stock and two-piece rotors.

The rotors are standard production parts available through US distribution... The new calipers I am getting will further reduce weight but it is not rotating so not as much of an affect on loss...

When it comes to modding cars I never worry much about the economic resoning behind it because if you really look at it there is none... Spending money on cars is a relative thing, to some individual modding his 1999 honda and spending 50.00 dollars is a big deal and then to the one spending 15k to upgrade the brakes on their Porsche 996 Turbo to ceramic it is an after thought...

When I sold my 996 that was basically stock (Euro sport suspension...) and my 1995 Mustang GT (620rwhp), I decided to have fun with a new project that would be challanging; that is why I purchased the RX8...

A few more comments:

When I purchased the RX8 along with the price of the car I budgeted about 35k to spend on mods. Some one may say wow, that is allot of money to spend on that car, well I know of show cars that started off cheaper than our RX8s and the owners have spent over 100k on them. Are they crazy, maybe; but they are having allot of fun... Not every mod we do to our cars need to have a business case attached to them, it's not about that. I bought a set of Axis hiros, they looked cool, I did a few shows with them and had fun in the process. Now I just bought a set of SSR Professor SP1s and they cost allot more than the Axis. Was that wise?, did I waste my time?; no I really enjoyed the process...

So everyone, go and have fun...

As for me and the StopTech, or any other big brake kit for that matter, I have a weird "Adrian Monk" type thing about symmetry...can't change the calipers or the rotors in the front without getting something in the back to match...that just won't work for me...there was word about StopTech making a kit for the rear...we'll see if and when that happens...
