You guy's got it wrong. I was on the phone with Mazda HQ and they told me that the original body design called for wood but to keep weight down they opted for recycled cardboard wrapped in tin foil.

He He He.... I haven't laughed so hard in a while. Cardboard....how about construction paper? :D

If the original poster is acutally serious (as opposed to a late April fools joke): the answer is a big NO.

The body is mostly steel, like most other cars. The only non-steel parts that I know of are the rear doors and the hood, which are aluminum.

Well, the little bit of the body just under the rear bumper and between the tail pipes are indeed hard plastic.

...Plastic body huh ? I think the last one we have seen was the Fiero from Pontiac ?

I always thought that in most modern cars, the body panels, metal or otherwise, do nothing in collisions, say beyond 15mph or so. Is it not the chassis frame and various re-enforcment components that actually protect the occupants?

Metal body panels for most modern cars are so thin that they are no stronger than the plastic panels on the Saturns, or the fiberglass bodies on the Corvettes.

I know the Deloreans outer panels are stainless steel but I think the chassis was made out of some type of plastic?? Back to the 8, I just confirmed that the pre-production cars are made out of cardboard but the final production car will be made out of Paper Mache.

so that means the bodies will be "hand-built" just like the engines:D
