View Full Version : everyones favorite subject.....Beer
billdo 04-02-2003, 02:26 AM Ahhhh yes, the subject close to everyones heart (or at least mine :D ) Lets hear it, what's your favorite beer? Right now I would have to say shiner bock, because I am wasted right now off of it as I post :D But all drunkeness aside lets hear it from you, what's the answer to this most troubling question?

Judging by the grammar here I am assuming you have substituted something more effective than beer at destroying brain cells.

Hehe... LOL. Anyway, I would have to say that my favorite beer is Bass or Heiniken. I like the stronger imported stuff.
MMmnnnmmnn... Duff beer... *drool*
eccles 04-02-2003, 09:27 AM Victoria Bitter. Nectar of the Gods from Melbourne, Australia, made by the same folks that inflict Fosters on the world - I guess VB balances out the scales for that piss.
Available in the UK as Victoria Beer, but sadly unavailable here in the US. My buds back home sent me a case for my birthday last week. :D
lefuton 04-02-2003, 10:28 AM i really like bass ale, rolling rock, sierra nevada, newcastle... probably in that order. as far as domestics go, mgd is my favorite. i used to like guiness until i got over that whole it's-so-dark-it-must-be-cool thing and realized it tasted like watery coffee...tho i'll be sure to try it again if i ever make it to ireland, i hear it's phenomenal there.
RotorMotor 04-02-2003, 11:09 AM Gordon Biersch...mmmm....yummy. Or Hemp Ale....
I found a new one at the bar the other night after losing most of my money in some rediculous 9-ball action... Amber Bock (I think it's made by Michelob). It's a dark, non-piss-tasting domestic that tastes like an import. I'll still take Gordon or Sammys over it anyday, but if you only got $2.50 left, it's a good bet....
MaRX8 04-02-2003, 11:13 AM Too much of a good thing..

zoom44 04-02-2003, 11:54 AM Yuengling Black and Tan! there is a one here i really like and that is Black Butte Porter. and for a fall back i like Rolling Rock too.
there are many good micro brews here in oregon:D
billdo 04-02-2003, 12:08 PM RotorMotor, amber bock is pretty good, and it helps that you can afford it after going through your couch cushins (sp). I tend to like the darker beers as well, but right now I really dont want any because I got lit last night and am paying for it. hang-overs are not cool. Oh, and It would take at least a keg for that old bag to look like brittany spears but I am sure some of the guys here would hit it sober. ;)

DTECH-RX 04-02-2003, 12:39 PM Shiner Bock and Amber Bock are both good and I'll even have an Ice House from time to time, but I prefer the medium to darker beers.
There was this micro brewery that use to be here in Ft. Lauderdale called the Independence Brewery that made a dark beer called "Stout" that has been my all-time favorite, Unfortunately they closed down for some reason.
I like a dark beer that is smooth, with a full bodied taste, that's not bitter. Anyone have any suggestions along these lines for me to try?

yeah, these heavy malt beers (that's where the dark colour comes from) are all called stouts... well, if you're british. they generally are light on the hopps, so that's why they're not as bitter as a lighter beer, or an ale.
anyhoo, all the best beer is microbrew... i've never gotten to sample any of the Oregonian stuff, but how widely available is it?? generally speaking, the further away you are from the place, the worse it is.
Some of my favourites come from up in the mountains, but even here in vancouver, there are two in-house brewed beers at two local pubs (Steamworks, and Granville Island Brewery) off the top of my head... good beer is never at a shortage here in the Lower Mainland. :) up the mountain (Whistler) there's a place there called, uh, the Brewhouse or something, and their stuff is good too... whenever you go to a place like that, they usually have a house ale, a house stout, and maybe one or two others, along with your assortment of "wet bread" flavours (Molson, Labatt, or worse still Budweiser or other generic Amercian label *shudder*)
i'm just not a big drinker: i prefer wine with my meals (if i drink at all).
oh, DTECH, you asked what ones you might try: buy a case of Guiness (even though it's after St.Pat's) and give that a try... it's not great, but it's damned good for coming out of a can.
zoom44 04-02-2003, 01:20 PM nonononono- guiness in the can will ruin it for you if you haven't had a properly poured one from the tap.
and i almost forgot- Victory Brewing company in Downingtown, Pa has several fabulous beers. my favorite there is their seasonally brewed Dopplebock. definetly my favorite micro brew of all time and if you stop in don't miss their Storm King Stout either.
A victory for your tastebuds!! (http://www.victorybeer.com/) :D :D :D

:p don't listen to him DTECH ;), he's obviously a fanatic about brew: as canned beers go, Guiness is still good... just keep it in perspective.

CraziFuzzy 04-02-2003, 04:07 PM It's a local, but I'd have to say Silver City's Fat Bastard... It's 9% and you can get it in 40oz bottles (I think its 40, I don't know.. it's damn big though)... its a scotch style Ale that goes down REAL smooth (well, for a 9% beer, that is)
DTECH-RX 04-02-2003, 05:13 PM Thanks for the recommendation Wakeech. I actually haven't tried Guiness, but for beer in general, I do prefer mine in bottles or on tap....hehehe. I knew about the Stouts being a class of dark beer. ;) It's just that they didn't have a fancy name for it that I remembered (been over 3 years ;) ) just "Stout". LOL
I prefer Bock and of course Stout, drinking Lagers only on occasion.
I'm actually a bit of a wine drinker myself and tend to drink wine more often than beer, but I still enjoy a good brew every now and then.
:)

Hehe.. 19.. :p
I prefer anything European.. German, Polish, Czech, Belgian, Dutch, etc.. Can't stand "domestic" US or even Canadian stuff.. yuck.. unless it's microbrewery stuff, then ok.

i like to believe the lower Canadian drinking age is because of the greater level of temperance we Canadian youth posess next to you Americans... AHAHAHAHA... :D
zoom44 04-02-2003, 07:06 PM oops i forgot MOOSEHEAD! used to drink quite a bit of that beer.
that's when i coined the phrase "i think lager is missing an "R". it should be a laRger beer" i thought it was quite funny way back when:p :D
note: both moosehead and the yuengling brews i mentioned earlier are brewed in the oldest continually brewing breweries in their respective countries. perhaps that's why they are good- they have had time to get it right ;)

Hate to disagree with ya, RM, but I have part of a six of Michelob's Amber Bock in the fridge right now. I'll drink the rest of it, because it is, after all, BEER! But I think it's just an import wannabee. Not much kick to it at all. Shiner Bock is way better (although not an import). I've been real partial to Jim Dundee's Honey Brown and George Killian's Irish Red lately. Both quite enjoyable for the first couple, at which point the Mich becomes more palatable :)
OK, either the Mich's really not half-bad for a mass-produced American brew, or I'm real thirsty right now...

FamilyGuy 04-03-2003, 12:59 PM Zoom44... Yuengling Black and Tan? Victory Brewery in Downington?
You're probably my next door neighbor. No seriously, I live in the southern end of Pottstown, about twenty minutes from Downington if you're smart enough to avoid rush hour.
I don't go for beer often. I like Yuengling Black and Tan. I would also recommend, if you happen to encounter it,
Mackeson XXX Stout. It's Scottish and has a nutty taste. The stuff goes down like soda, one of the best tasting beers I've ever tried.
zoom44 04-03-2003, 01:12 PM i used to be. my wife and i moved to portland oregon 4 years ago. i miss the beers from home:D can't get them here but since this thread started i emailed the folks at victory to see if there was a way i could get some ;) i grew up and spent most of my life around west chester downingtown coatesvile etc. most of my family is there.
i saw in one of your other posts that your wife wants to move you to NC. i was stationed at camp lejeune for a couple of years. the winters there are harsh, especially along the coast. they get alot of ice storms along the coast. brrrr. not nice
FamilyGuy 04-03-2003, 01:44 PM My wife worked in Fayetteville (right by Fort Bragg) after she graduated in 1998, until she found a job back up north in 2000 so we could see each other more than five times a year.
She liked the weather down there better and she liked the fact that she could drive to a warm beach and back in less than a day. She also got the job on the recommendation of some good friends who live in the area, and she misses seeing those friends.
So yeah, she'd like to move back down. Maybe in a few years. We can't afford it now, and I doubt we could both find a good job in the same area.

I'm with ya bro. It's by no means a favorite of mine, but it is a good "I've been drinkin imports (or Sammys) for 3 hours, I'm broke, and I really want another beer" beer.... I can't stand Bud, Coors or any of those other watered down piss beers, so I was happy to find a darker domestic that didn't have that "I wanna hold my nose while I pound this" effect....
Doctorr 04-03-2003, 03:56 PM Abso-bloomin-lutely!
.
There is no bad beer! I think the point is that Guiness-in-a-can is still good beer, face it there is no bad beer, just better beer! But draught Guiness from the tap is in a completely different universe, and I do know my Guiness, I did my growing up in Liverpool, (the Capital of Ireland.)
.
Duff Dry is best! I hate Duff Light!!!
.
For years my favourite was 'Tooths KB' from Ausland, in the big steel can. It had a neat overspray of plastic spots that made it look like it was covered in little beads of 'perspiration' like out of the fridge on a muggy day! A really clever effect! Can one of our Antipodean members let me know if they still make it? Or if Tooths is even still in business?
.
Now I am smitten with Samuel Adams, (not the guy, the malted beverage)... for an american beer it is AMAZING. And I mean that in the best possible way!
.
In the best of the world category, I would have to nominate an English beer, RUDDLES COUNTY. Even in a can this is nectar, a classic well hopped ale, but not as bitter as 'Bitter', if you know English beer. Lots of classic village beer taste, without the harshness usually found in UK beers. (Newcastle/Bass for instance) Beer drinkers owe it to themselves to try it, just to know what a perfect English 'Country' Style beer should be!......
.
Hieneken. Lowenbrau, ( the real one from Bavaria, not the Miller imitation) Fresh Stella Artois, if you can find it. Big Rock Traditional from Calgary (excellent). Disapointed by Shaftebury beers when I visited Victoria B.C. recently, tried most of them, quite forgettable for a small craft beer effort.
.
Must stop now, enough theory, get back to practical!
.
Ray.
WoW.. yes. that post reminded me, Gordon Biersch!! Wenever I'm in Vegas, an afternoon at Gordons place is mandatory! World Class brews!!!
javahut 04-03-2003, 05:25 PM A truly great beer that I think few have heard of is a German brew made by Schneider & Sons called Aventinus. They call it a Wheat-Doppelbock. To my mind, it's like a "dark" wheat beer (the only one on the planet?). It's spicy, thick, and grainy.
Other than that, real brew heads know one of the best brews in existence is Sierra Nevada Stout.
eccles 04-03-2003, 05:51 PM D'oh, nearly forgot... Chimay Blue. :)

Agreed. Sam Adams is an excellent beer... the stuff is great from the tap.
I also like Boddington's (smooth as Guiness, but not so dark), and Guiness.
TiRX8 04-04-2003, 06:43 PM  TUBOURG is an excellent beer. It's from Denmark.

great news from the mouth of the brew master himself:
Charlie,
Your timing is great. It looks strong that Columbia distributing will be carrying HopDevil and Golden Monkey in OR before summer hits.Just think how many unenlightened in your new home town you can turn on to Victory!
WOOOHOOOO!!! haven't had their "golden monkey" yet, but people tell me it's great. and the Hop Devil is their many award winning ipa!
TJRX8 04-05-2003, 10:49 PM No Corona huh? A good refreshing beer on hot Florida beach. Otherwise Ayinger (if you can find it try it) from Germany, any except the Weiss. I used to live about 5 miles from the brewery (and 4 or 5 others) :) For american beers Sam and Pete's Wicked, Killing's is a decent cheap red beer.
Not one drop of Bud, MGD, Coor's or Mich. etc. has touched these lips since 1989. But probably over 100 others from Germany to Japan and back and any micro brewery wherever I may be.
Boozehound 04-06-2003, 01:00 AM How bout a little Spaten Optimator, or Warsteiner? Maybe a nice wheat beer in the summer, with a lemon wedge.... mmmm.... hefewizen....
As for American beer, if everyone hates domestics, go brew your own (being your own domestic 'brewery' has its perks), its not that expensive, and if it sucks, the only one to blame is yourself....
RotorMotor 04-07-2003, 10:27 AM How bout a little Spaten Optimator

Oh yeah, gotta love Optimator! I just don't get a chance to drink it very often. My wife buys the beer when she goes grocery shopping, and they don't have it at HEB :)
Hey quicklude if you think coors light is bad. Then you should try some nasty piss ass beer called nutty ice. Its the worst tasting beer ever. Well thats what me and some of my old college buddies drank for a week four years ago. Couldn't even afford coors light. The tast of nutty ice was so bad it even made bud light taste like some fine wine. :(
RotorMotor 04-09-2003, 03:24 PM Hahahahaha, Natty (Nutty's OK too) Ice.... I haven't had that since my broke college days either! We drank so much of that back then we named our band "Natty's Vice". Kinda like Jane's Addiction, but our logo looked like the one from the can. LOL. Those were good days....
Coors Light is better, but it's still a piss beer.... ;)
