View Full Version : Dilema about the RX8
JDMRX8 04-02-2003, 02:00 AM Hey guys i'm new here but I was wondering what would you do in this situation.
Right now I can put a 1k down deposit fully refundable and be guaranteed a RX-8 in the first batch which would be here by late may, but i must place the deposit asap, also they sound like a very ligit mazda dealer being 1 of the biggest in my area.
As of now I currently drive another car which I would sell now in order to pay for this car, but what happens if the RX-8 doesn't have the look and feel of the drive that everyone's expecting.
Sorry for the fuss, crossing my fingers that the RX-8 is one sweet ride all around. Wish we could all test drive this car, but most of them are already preordered and gone.
JDMRX8 04-02-2003, 02:08 AM Also i have been ranting to my gf about this car all day. Right now i'm feeling as though the car is so hot in pictures, from every angle you take a pic of it, it looks great. And with that OEM bodykit and Gunmetal rims it looks pretty awesome.
For those of you wanting to purchase this car do you think that it'll drop below MSRP anytime soon with the way the market is, due to the WAR, economy, People getting laid off.
Also what if you preordered the car and when it gets here it's not what you expected in terms of driving but you just sold your previous car to get this.
Although honestly i love the way the car looks and what it has to offfer already. With the exception that it only gets 18 to 23 miles, back seats cant fold down, and that it doesnt have as much mid range as others. But this car certainly looks a lot better than others stock.
JDMRX8 04-02-2003, 02:59 AM What do you guys also think about the trunk, reading in the magazines they say that it has the smallest openings which makes it useless, but the trunk itself inside is pretty big, i wonder if the opening is big enough to lets say fit a computer monitor or big luggage case.
Also does anyone have any pictures of where the optional navigation would be placed if we ordered it? and what are your thoughts on the mid range of the car with it having only 159 lb of torque at 6200 rpm compared to other cars which have over 200+ torque.
JDMRX8 04-02-2003, 03:24 AM For those of you thinking about getting the OEM navigation do you think it's worth 2k, or better to pay 2k for an aftermarket dvd/navi which retails 3.3k+ like the new pioneer full unit.
StephenF 04-02-2003, 09:20 AM Wow, that's a lot of questions. Here's my answer/opinion on some of them:
If I had a car I could sell to get the RX-8 (and not lose any practicallity issues), I'd do it. Right now, I've got a Protege5 and I'm not willing to give up its load carrying ability. I'll have to wait until I can add the RX-8 without replacing the P5. Also what if you preordered the car and when it gets here it's not what you expected in terms of driving but you just sold your previous car to get this. I seriously doubt you'd be unhappy with it, but can you wait to sell you car until after you test drive your preordered car? Would the dealer hold it for a week while you sell your other car? Since your refund is refundable, if you don't like it, you'll get your money back.i wonder if the opening is big enough to lets say fit a computer monitor or big luggage case. Hmm... good question. Does anybody have dimensions for the opening? I doubt it'd be big enough for a decent sized monitor (unless its LCD :) ). It might be big enough for a moderately sized suitcase. My wife and I travel with 2 small suitcases, so they would allow more manuverability. what are your thoughts on the mid range of the car with it having only 159 lb of torque at 6200 rpm compared to other cars which have over 200+ torque. I like to rev engines anyway, and if its super smooth like the rotary, it's even better. To me, engines that have a lot of torque down low, but don't like to be revved feel cumbersome and not much fun. As long as you haven't gotten used to driving a torque-monster, I think it'd fine. For those of you thinking about getting the OEM navigation do you think it's worth 2k, or better to pay 2k for an aftermarket dvd/navi which retails 3.3k+ like the new pioneer full unit. If was going to get a nav system, I'd definitely go with the OEM one. It's display and controls would undoubtedly be better incorporated into the car. If the Pioneer one you talking about has to be mounted in the dash, you'd have to mess up that beautiful dash with a custom installation of some sort. You may lose some flexibility with the OEM one, but if it becomes that big of an issue a few years down the road, you could get an aftermarket one that'd probably be a bit cheaper by then anyway.
Hope this helps,
-Stephen

You didn't say but at most dealers deposits are refundable if you don't buy the car, especially on a car that's looking to be desirable like the RX8, so why not put down the deposit and then not buy the car if you're really disappointed with it? You'll get your $1K back and at most you've lost perhaps three months interest at a whole 1.8% or so interest at most banks...
shkeller55 04-02-2003, 12:12 PM Look around on this forum and you will find pictures of the navigation system.
JDMRX8 04-03-2003, 12:31 AM Hey Stephen I just wanted to thank you and everyone else for taking the time to help me figure this out, I bet a lot of people out there are coming up with some of these same issues, figured I mind as well bring some of them out. Your answeres really helped me a lot.
After careful though i'm going for the RX-8, and will be making a deposit on it asap for the second batch. Does anyone happen to know the color of this car? I bet most of you have seen this pic as my girlfriend and I have been searching the entire website and found all these RX-8 Videos and pictures. I must say this car is pretty dam impressive. Check out this picture.
http://www.motorcities.com/contents/03ANB575464984.html Also I was wondering if you knew the color of this car, I'm guessing it's sunlight silver but it could also be the darker one if im not mistaken by the sun.
After thinking about the navigation system, many people have different opinions, the good thing about the OEM one is that it's OEM and it blends in perfectly with the car, and the control butts are incorporated into the car. About the OEM I heard from my BMW friends that when the M3's added Navigation they realized they could not change their speakers due to this unless they changed the whole headunit and everything due to the wiring. That's why some believe that you should go for a aftermarket DVD/Navi. With this in consideration a aftermarket would have to be mounted in the dash or else you would need to make a custom dash.
Today I recently talked to a mazda dealer and I heard that the 1st batch of rx8 preowners had to put down a 5k non refundable deposit and I was shocked, then I was informed that for the second batch it would be 1k and they said if you want refundable dont even bother putting a deposit down and just wait till the cars here.

haha, that is dealer bullsh**. I put down 500 redundable for 2nd batch. Most guys here (from what I've read) have put down 500-1000 in first or second batch. Refundable is a MUST!
Elara 04-03-2003, 11:01 AM JDMRX8,
What area are you in- I'm sure someone here can recommend a dealer who WON'T charge you that much. Chenpin is right- that's a load of crap from your dealer. I put down $500 refundable, and my dealer still has a ton of cars left over (some in each batch) at MSRP.
Good luck.
JDMRX8 04-03-2003, 11:15 AM Hey guys I actually found a pretty good dealer in the bay area, ca. It was pretty funny when I called this one dealer and he said 5k down and 5k over msrp. Sorry but i busted out laughing =D.
Thanks for the help Elara I'll be going down to another Mazda dealer who seems really cool. It seems that a lot of people are going to get Sunlight Silver, from what I heard this one dealer said that they had 6 silvers, 2 red, 2 blues, 2 yellows, and 1 black on their first batch.

that is silver storm only seen on that mazdaspeed concept and the mps mazda6 concept. it is not an available colr choice for the rx-8.
JDMRX8 04-03-2003, 01:01 PM doh! guess i'm going for sunlight silver or yellow, hard choice, sometimes the yellow reminds me of a mustang because of the gills near the fender.
I'm just wondering how many of you are planning on getting the navigation?

I've got the Trafficmaster smartnav in my current car, and it's what I'll get in my (due August) RX8. Smartnav uses a phone call to a call centre to set up the route - so you can do that while driving, no fiddly buttons. It gives you a route from the central server so it's always up to date on road changes, it takes into account traffic jams - and will warn you to get an update if a jam occurs while you are on your journey. The new version also has stolen car tracking and best of all Gatso warnings. It keeps an updated map of all the Gatsos in the UK and as you approach one it beeps - politely if you are under the limit - not so if you need to take urgent action.
The unit fits out of sight (there is only one button, a mike and the GPS antenna to be seen) and costs £500 (plus fitting). There is also a £10 a month cost to use it.
So no I won't be getting the £1500 Mazda one. I have gone for mettalic and leather.
Does anyone know if the 6 disc changer plays MP3s?

what is a gatso? no the changer does not play mp3s. so it's either a sinlge player that plays mp3s also or the changer, but not both. someone mentioned getting the tape player and then using an adaptor to play mp3s from an external unit.
JDMRX8 04-03-2003, 03:40 PM Does anyone have pictures of the single cd player headunit? I wonder how the setup will be for this and if we will have to modify the consul to put in a aftermarket deck.
Also I have heard by having the OEM navi it will be hard to work in a aftermarket setup.
simonr 04-03-2003, 03:41 PM A Gatso is a British (well, invented by a Belgian) speed camera. http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/scggatso.jpg
The UK is rife with them because the police forces that use them can used the money they raise to pay for more of the things.
Radar detectors are legal in the UK but Gatsos give out very little signal and so are hard to spot.
A better system is a GPS which knows where all the cameras are (and there are several) and which warns you when you approach
