View Full Version : Where do you keep your garage door opener?

Mine won't fit onto the thick plastic sun shades.

I currently have it stashed in the sunglasses compartment. This is far from conventient since the button is hard to access without taking the entire thing out.

I have too many CDs in the center console to keep it in there.

I often have 2 bottles of water in the cup holders, so that space is out.

<sigh>

What do you do with your garage door opener?

I currently have my opener in the sunglass holder as well, but the button is easily accessable when I open it.

I only did this because my garage door has an anti-theft feature that makes it difficult (impossible?) for a theif to steal your code when you open the door with your remote. I have to disable this feature, and then I have something like 10-20 seconds to program my homelink mirror before my garage door opener reverts back to "safe" mode.

I haven't gotten around to finding the door manual and actually performing this task, but I wanted to give you a heads up in case you have the homelink mirror.

I use the first two buttons for the Garage doors at home and the third for the gate to the parking lot at work instead of punching in a code at the key pad every time, very nice to have.

8is>enuff, when you do program your homelink, use the RX8 owners manual, not the quick guide. I remember trying to do this unsuccessfully from the quick guide. The quick guide is missing a step, the owners manual has what you need.

Yeah, another homelink. Use all three buttons too.

I just tried to have a garage door installed and they told me I don't have enough clearance in my garage. I guess I need 4" and I only have 2". Anyone know how to overcome this?

My opener is about a year ahead of homelink so I have to use the opener. I stash the opener in the cup warmer......

Homelink is a programmable button(s) located on the bottom of the rearview
mirror frame that lets you set up the button to open your garage door, security gate(s) etc...

What do you do with your garage door opener?

I had from a prior car a cd holder that wraps around the sun visor. I found that this holds my garage remote very well when you have the metal clip pinch the thin cd holder as opposed to the hard plastic sun visor.

Before this technique dawned on me I too was struggling as to where to put the opener. Hope this works for you.

Another satisfied Homelink user.

For the uninitiated: Homelink provides 3 programmable buttons at the bottom of your rearview mirror that you can program to operate your garage door opener, electronic gate to your property, etc...It is very nice not to have to try and attach your openers to your visor.

Only if you wanted a hole in your roof.

I hate this BS package thing. Why should I have to spend roughly 2k on a $150 mirror?

Homelink works with most garage door openers including the ones with roaming codes... You have to read the instructions carefully and you can get it to work in 99% of cases...

After re-reading this thread I tried again to get my homelink to work with my garage door opener. I have read that owners manual backward and foward and still no position results. Things got so bad that I erased the codes for my currently working remotes and when i tried to reprogram them, one now opens the neighbors garage door. Talk about embarrassing. Haven't figured out what my next move will be.

RotorGeek

Yeah the homlink was hard to program but after like 4 tries it started working. If your remote is too big. Contact the manufacture of your garage door opener. They might have a Key Chain remote. I have one just in case, and it's in my ash tray.

It gave me similar problems. I was able to program it from inside the garage. I parked my car inside and hit the learn button on the G.D.O. After several tries it worked.

I parked directly under the opener and tried both sets of directions until I finally gave up. I'll probably try again but I'm still mad about the pain in the butt this has been.

Well like I said. I tried at least 5 times the first I got the car then on the seconf day i tried again and it worked. What I did was park in the garage left the key in the ON position. Pushed the learn key on the G.D.Opener. Then as fast as I could got in my car and held the Homlink button for like 30seconds. If you see your GDO light blink on and off your good to go. light did'nt do $hit. It just starting working. Hope this helps

Mine just fits in the rear half of the console. Thinking about replacing it with a keychain remote or maybe wiring it to a spare switch so it's concealed. "Hats off" (literally) to those who can fit in the GT, and thus have homelink :)

Not too big of an issue for me. Hell, I'm still feeling spoiled by not having to get out of the damn car :D

Um... My old garage door opener wouldn't work no matter what I tried. Then I realized that I didn't have the reset button on the garage door opener itself (at the motor). Guess what? The old opener wasn't Homelink capable. Bought a new opener from Sears and it worked without a problem the first time.

OK. I wish I had homelink, but I don't. (I also only paid $25k for a Sport version that has all the performance of the GTs selling for over $32k). ;)

SO, I keep enough napkins (and ok, trash... I'll be honest) in the driver's door pocket to wedge my door opener in there in such a way that the button shows up in the side hole opening. Very convenient. (Although I still wish I had Homelink - just too cheap to pay $200+ for it!).

Actually.. Its more than that.. Cause the morons made the mounts on the glass different.. So buying the mirror isnt enough..

The garage door opener GODS must have been listening, bacause this morning out of the blue, my home link started working with the garage door opener. I sat in my car for about 5 minutes in disbelief, but I am so happy now. I hope others that are having problems, the garage door opener GOD's shine on you, like they did on me this morning.

I have a question..

The garage door opener for my apartment is operated by using a card...

I guess the card has some magnetic thing inside it that I have to take close to

the sensor on my way in...

my guess is that homelink can´t be used with this?

it may sound stupid asking a question like this.. but i really would like to make

use of the homelink...

i noticed someone saying that he uses it to open the gate at work.. instead of

punching in numbers...

My Inlaws have a similar gate with the card and since they don't have a control to program the homelink with I am always forced to use the keypad to call them.

I have a G/T with homelink. At first I was unable to use the homelink on our gate because it was on a "rolling code" and had to use our issued opener. It fit perfectly in the ash tray and I was able to close the lid, kept everything looking clean.

I got ahold of the gate guy and he helped me program my homelink for the gates "rolling code". He had to do something with the transmitter on the gate while I held the button to program the link.

PITA at the time, but very nice now.

ADT has co-authored a procedure with Medtronics where a microchip is surgically implanted in your brain, right behind your left ear. A micro-guage wire is implanted between your scalp and skull, running from one side of your head to the other, acting as an antenna. It works on thought transmission.

Depending on the package, I can open my garage door, change channels on the TV, turn porch lights on and off, send emails, and even turn on the sprinkler system in the yard. All by simply thinking about it.

Your Homelink systems AREN'T DOO DOO (edit) NOW ARE THEY?!! neener neener :D :D

yeah programming the home link was a two man job for me, because the garage only went to 'accumulate' mode (find homelink remotes) for ten seconds at a time, and i couldnt run back to the car in time. Plus you gotta hold the button and not just tap it, at least in my case....me loves homelink

I have a Craftsman opener...the clip on the back of the remote slides out of its mount, leaving the remote as a flat rectangle. I put it in my ash tray and close the cover. Flip open the cover and press the big button with index finger...works pretty good. Some HOT days I have to actually take the remote out and press the button more firmly...problem of the remote.....

Homelink is pretty much standard on most cars over $20K.
