My brand new baby:Engine Oil Adding, frustration
My brand new baby:Engine Oil Adding, frustration
Well,
I'm the proud owner of a Titanium Metallic GT RX8 Manual Tranny, 3 weeks old, delivered with 11 km's. I'm extremely happy with my car, infact i'm in love with her. She's really my only joy, and I know that sounds pathetic.
The only issue i have with the car is the having to add oil. I've come to terms with fuel consumption, and I know to keep the consumption economical you basically have to not rev higher than 3K rpm...lol...(anyone who owns an 8 knows this is impossible) but what get's me the most is this adding oil every two fill ups. I read about that on this site before it was delivered. But can you believe my salesman never told me about it before i bought it...figures.
Thing is that it's annoying and time consuming, nevermind expensive. It's not winter here yet, but in toronto winters, having to add oil is a biatch.
Whatevs, i love the car so much that i can deal with it...but still...
I have to comment on the color of my RX8. The titanium metallic is actually magical...it's like always changing. At night depending on the color of the street lights or city lights, it sometimes looks like light pink metallic, or light blue or purple metallic, and in the day it looks chrome and fighter plane functional...i'm truly impressed with it.
The reaction from people is significant. Some guy asked me if you need a pilots liscence to drive it...
Alot of people that i've taken for spins get really orgasmiclly excited...and that's great. Alot of people look. Chicks dig the car. But i think it actually makes it harder to pick up, because cruising in one of them makes you look really intimidating....it's a mean machine with a smile on it's face!
Another thing is, it sounds like a plane...amazing....you can slowly rev all the way up in 1st on a neighbourhood street, and basically it wows you.
Anyways...Happy with it beyond measure....but the car comes with some added responsibilities....like answering peoples comments and hosting their admiration. Not such a cost.
be well
You dont need to add oil every two fillups, I think the manual recommends you check it that frequently though. I find my car uses about a quart in about 1500-2000 miles, I usually top it up when the dipstick shows halfway between full and low. I check it probably once every 5 fillups or so - it's not really a hassle.
Interesting that checking the oil (tire pressure and other things) is standard maintenance that should be done on any car, not just this one.

Same for me. Probably use one quart between changes (3000 -3500 miles).

not the same...
one quart - 4.000kms???
my car one litre - 4.000kms... there are also people in Spain who has a conso of one litre each 7.500kms, but in my case I have more conso because I always drive very fast....

Uh, if you think buying a quart of oil every now and then is expensive... well, I'm just not going to finish that sentence! :p
Obviously it bothers you, or you wouldn't have posted it. Here is my thought on the subject (since you posted, you're getting it).
I drive ~800 miles per month and check my oil once a month. A quart of oil lasts me 4 months at the very MINIMUM. Maybe the dealer recommended this regimen to keep 8s covered for all drivers? Perhaps, there are those out there that drive 3k+ miles a month?! OF COURSE he should have told customers, because checking/adding oil is a characteristic of a rotary. It isn't like buying a quart of oil (budget $2 a month AT THE MOST) and adding it is such a laborous activity! Heck, I like the idea of the rotary BURNING oil to operate, rather than having a higher probablity of problems (due to a piston engine having valves, cylinders, and SO MANY more parts as compared to a rotary). I'll take my oil burner over a valve clatterer ANYDAY :D

I put in a quart about 2000 kms ago. I'm not even sure that it was necessary. The dipstick showed 3/4 full. The car is in for an oil change now, so it'll be topped up. I figure I'll be good for another 2-3000 kms.
It's not a big deal really.

I think you confused the recommendation to check your oil every two fillups with adding oil. Pretty much every single car out there is going to have a recommendation in the manual that you should check your oil every two-three fillups.
And like everyone else, I average about a quart every 4-8k miles. And while I checked the oil every other time when I first got the car, now I only check it once a month or so. Hasn't hurt it yet, and I'm about to go in for my 20k checkup.

SFERRETT, all you need is a first gen and your collection is complete. muahahahahaha :D :D :D
I check mine every fill up, but add when its a quart low. Thats like after 6 fill ups, but for some reason, I am past 6 fill ups and its not a quart low. I think the Dealership over filled the oil 7weeks ago.

wow, my oil consumption is screwed up then. I took my car in for service @ 3000km and i already had to put in 2 quarts. Maybe that's why the service guy looked at me oddly when I told him i've already filled up twice. But the oil fillup doesn't bother me at all. People do look at me oddly when i take the cover off the engine and start checking everything.. more amazed i guess that the rotary is so damn small
But as JL stated, winter is going to be a real bitch. HOpefully our unseasonally cold summer means a better winter.. But i doubt it

Seriously - you've already been corrected that you don't have to add oil every second fillup, just check it frequently. How hard can it be to check the oil now and then? Good lord, winter in Toronto isn't THAT bad! Don't be such a stereotypical Toronto whiner!
We'll make you move to northern Manitoba for a winter, and then you'll never complain about winter in Toronto again.
:pRegards,
Gordon
I can certainly live with burning a quart of oil every 3000 miles.
But some people are saying a quart every 1500 to 2000 miles. That is a lot! And having to remove the engine cover to add oil also seems a bit inconvenient.
I use a oil change place that gives free top ups between oil changes. Hopefully they won't have an exclusion for this policy for rotaries!

well
Maybe my renesis is especially thirsty, but the truth is the canadian manual states to top up the oil every two fill ups......as much of an idiot as i may appear, i did monitor that after high rev driving after about 350 km the oil meter was just above the first signal etch line, meaning it had burned a significant amount. I didn't mean to replace the oil entirely. But i've added about 1.5 litres of oil in the 1800 KM that i've driven. If i hadn't the oil tank would likely have been near empty. Maybe my car is especially thirsty because it's new, or because i drive it like a race car driver on steroids...i dunno...
the issue i have more than the cost of the oil, is the actual removal of engine cover and doing the adding....i mean that's 5-10 minutes repeated about 50 times a year if you drive a lot, a significant amount of time in one year, especially when 70% of the year here is near to or sub zero.
Anyways...still worth it by far.
