what does FD stand for?

I read it all the time and i cant make a acronym out of it!

FD is not an acronym. It is the production model of the 3rd gen RX-7. ALL RX-7's start with with FB, FC, or FD(with the exception of the 79-81 RX-7 which was SA22C). FB=81-85 1st gen, FC=2nd gen, FD=3rd gen.

It's actually FD3S, FC3S, FB3S, and SA22C which we just use FD, FC, FB, and SA for short (but usually just FB for all first gens)
And isn't just 79-80 for SA, you put 81 ;-)

F-series rotary sports cars started with the FB back in 81?

(Correct me if I'm wrong, but the USA series-I RX-7 from 78-80 was prefixed an SA?)

Thus the liniage.

FB = 81-85 - 1st gen RX-7
FC = 86-91 - 2nd gen RX-7
FD = 92-02 - 3rd gen RX-7
FE = 03-08 - 1st gen RX-8

se = rx8.That is either a hope or a guess. SE3P is the chassis designation in Japan. The U.S. VIN number uses the FE designation as a continuation of the rotary line.

i wanted the rotary and bought the rx8 over the s2000 for the rear seats. but seeing as i've used them less than half a dozen times in a year, they are just wasted space. i'd be nice to have a modern rotary with only 2 seats.

FE3P = 5 Speed RX-8 that's not available in America but everywhere else in the world.

So, it's SA, FB, FC, FD, FE/SE...

They are listing their hydrogen model as "ABA-SE3P"

Gotta love the FD negative descriptions....oh wait - looks like the 8 is doing about as well with engine replacements at the moment. Looks like the 8 is garnering the same attention as the FD, relatively poor dealership knowledge and cost cutting designs for the US market (5-20 oil type thing).

When the next rotary powered car comes out, those new owners will be making fun of the terrible reliability of the renesis and the FD, welcome to club hate.

Most of them are acting like the rx8 is 1000x more reliable than the FD. They have just about as much engine replacements already done and the 8 is still relatively new, with newer technology and a "new" type of 13B. ANDDD its NA.

I love the 8 but most of the owners have no right to be joking about the FD when this is also an RX site lol.

I can take a joke, whether it's FD engine related, etc but seems like the jokes on here are perpetuating the myth that the FD is a crappy car...which it's not. Just like others saying the 8 is a crappy car with the previous engine recall and now this new batch of engine failures...the car is a great car which is still being refined on the fly. The FD wasn't pulled from the US soil due to just engine problems like some think. The terrible dollar to yen ratio made the price tag sore on the FD and the SUV craze was just beginning in full swing. The yuppies now started having kids and a 2 seater that costs 40k+ wasn't selling but the SUV's were. The 8 might be facing the same situation with the cost of the car going up due to the weakening dollar to yen exchange rate although the drop isn't as dramatic as the 230 yen to dollar drop to the 110 yen to dollar is hovers at now.

Although G-Rex's FE one liner is pretty good too :)

All JDM version RX-8's get the "SE3P" chassis prefix. Some Asian countries too.

All export version RX-8's get the "FE" prefix

FYI, the Series-II RX-7 (81-83) + series-III RX-7 (84-85) was known as an SA22 for the JDM version & most rhd countries. The USA models where prefixed an FB by comparison.

Look at every 8's prefix that's not the high output model, they're dubbed with the FE prefix. Then check the high power 6 speed models, they're dubbed with the SE prefix. I never said that the SE prefix was limited to the US. I just simply said USDM because that's all we get over here in the US.

+1 to it being a valid Q. But only because the faq section of this site is pretty weak. There are several members who have taken the time to write up some stuff, but all the faqs do NOT end up in one section - or at the very least, the more useful ones are not included or linked to the redirect page linked to the banner FAQ.

U guys r funny as this was an epic thread bump that hasnt been seen for years now and you all have a comment to say something about it.

I have a feeling they call it SE3P by mistake.

cuz if you know japanese people, the way they say *F* and *S* are kinda funny. if you dont pay close attention, you might think they're saying *S* instead of *F*

So it could be like this

One day, the engineers trying to tell the press release guy their new rotary powered car code :

A: *Hey, our new car code is FE3P, ok ?* (said the F in japanese way)
B: *what you said again sir? You said SE3P?* (thought its S, but it should be F)
A: * Yeah, FE3P. Now hurry up, people are waiting!* (thought he said F, but its S)
B: *Ok sir, I will put it down as SE3P, Im gonna go alright? Thanks sir* (total mess)
