View Full Version : New RX-7 "concept"
Strider 07-15-2002, 09:07 AM Just thought that I'd get some opinions about these new RX-7 and Supra concepts (from what I've been told). I don't really like the RX-7 w/o the flip-up headlights. The supra is just fugly as of now but hopefully it might get better.
KrisA 07-15-2002, 10:28 AM Pics?
Styjan 07-15-2002, 11:33 AM I think he is talking about this pic. Top is rumor RX-7, bottom is rumor Supra.

Strider 07-15-2002, 11:33 AM Aight now that I feel like a total dumb@ss for forgetting the link... sorry-
Supra/RX-7 (http://www.my350z.com/japan/may29/rx7supra.jpg)
Styjan 07-15-2002, 11:34 AM ha, we posted at the same time!
Strider 07-15-2002, 11:35 AM I swear Styjan- dude you always seem to be just a click ahead of me oh well it's all good... at least now everybody doesn't have to actually click (cause that's almost manual labor :p ) Thanks

red_base 95 07-15-2002, 01:26 PM The RX-7 rendered above looks pretty good, different enough from the RX-8, but there is a resemblance.
The rear of that supra looks very, very good. Very clean. The front though looks too chopped up, like they ran out of material for the hood. That should be extended down on the fascia. Almost has an Aston Martin DB5/DB6 look to it on the front.
Either way, I hope to be out of the car market after getting the RX-8 when released next year.
enjoy 07-15-2002, 02:40 PM Hey, ive been observing and reading your guys's posts for quite awhile now can just though maybe i would say something:) i just want to know how many people think that the RX-7 concept looks almost like the C5 Corvette from the angle shown?
hehe.
Styjan 07-15-2002, 02:52 PM Oh no... your batting the bee hive!
Your going to get a lot of rants that the C5 Corvette lifted it's styling cues from the 3rd Gen RX-7 (which is true).
enjoy 07-15-2002, 03:04 PM "C5 Corvette lifted it's styling cues from the 3rd Gen RX-7"
Yes i agree, i apologize for that incorrect observation, i should say: Doesn't the C5 Corvette look like the RX-7 Concept from that particular angle?
Better sentence order.
Strider 07-15-2002, 03:09 PM anybody have an idea what the bumps on the top of the car could be for, or is it an optical illusion?-
enjoy 07-15-2002, 03:15 PM Head Room. ;)
Nah, just kidding thats a good question maybe for styling?
Styjan 07-15-2002, 04:48 PM The 3rd Gen RX-7 had bulges on the roof too. I think they are part aerodynamics, part looks, part head room.

Strider 07-15-2002, 04:50 PM well hot diggity, I forgot about those-
KrisA 07-15-2002, 05:43 PM Damn that Hoopra is hot! The front is the same as pics that were floated about a year ago, the rest is more edgy and wild. I love it! Give that baby a new version of the 2JZ-GTE, perhaps with only 1 ball bearing turbo, tuned to about 350 hp, sell it for 35K USD and they have a sure fire winner!
Perhaps this is the car that will allow us Toyota enthusiasts to come back out of the closet! It's been tough these last few years...
Christopher 08-05-2002, 11:04 PM For some reason, I see some Maserati 3200GT in that 2004 RX-7.
I do hope the RX-7 does look like that when it comes out. It's a great design. :)
BlueAdept 08-06-2002, 02:28 AM Just think about this...
The front of that concept RX-7 looks quite like the front of the RX-Evolve concept with that slightly V shaped slot.. but the REAL 3rd Gen RX7 looks more like the front of the final RX-8.
I think if they do it, the front will be more styled... kinda like the old ones and the RX-8... which will be an improvement,.. IMHO.
wakeech 08-06-2002, 06:32 PM it's just me, but i can't understand how you guys could like that styling... god, i could never think of sullying the good name of the 7 to "continue" the 8's styling and make it look like that!! and who the hell drew that picture?? man, i just <<shudder>>...
i definitely think that it needs:
1. Flip up head lights
2. Half as many ducts and vents (like the 3rd gen)
3. Those secondary non-flipup lights below the big headlights (like every other 7)
4. a rethought-out silhouette, to make it more like a sports car, and a lot less like a Corvette
but that's just my opinion, i could be wrong... ;)
seriously though, i know i got into it a while ago in another thread, but doesn't it feel like the 7 NEEDS the flip ups?? i couldn't imagine one without 'em, and think of how individual it would be, in a market where even the new NSX doesn't have them!!
zoom44 08-06-2002, 07:04 PM i like the flip ups, they should definetly use 'em:cool:
BlueAdept 08-06-2002, 07:06 PM I respect people that want them... and they do look nice (When down)... and perhaps when up too... but they are nasty aerodynamically when up....
Perhaps make them an option.
zoom44 08-06-2002, 07:11 PM yeah i was going to mention that and also there is the whole "make everything that would add weight (i.e. flip up motors) an option" crowd. but they look cool. they could always be the kind that flip completly over rather than just popping up. then the aero wouldn't be as affected.
BlueAdept 08-06-2002, 07:23 PM The flip over completely would be cool... especially if they had a manual method to lock them in the "available" position incase they failed at an inconvenient moment...
We once had all the lights on an old Rover P5B coupe fail at about 2am in the highlands of scotland... We were about 40 miles from... well, the nearest living soul I expect.... it was SO dark that you couldn't see your hand infront of your face!
zoom44 08-06-2002, 08:42 PM my 89 accord had a manual crank knob like that so you could put them up or down if something failed. it was definetly handy. helped me avoid the one eyed look on a few occasions. ;)
Concepts always look suspect - those headlights are similar to the Evolv RX8 concept - and it dramatically changed.
Why is Mazda soooo secretive about their unrealesed cars???
block911 08-07-2002, 10:47 AM Was the supra discontinued? Or just no longer imported in the US?
BlueAdept 08-07-2002, 06:18 PM You mean that you guys don't have the supra... Err... I don't pay that much attention, but I know I've seen brand new ones in the last year here...
wakeech 08-08-2002, 06:11 PM nah, the supra was discontinued in the States in like 95 or 98...
oh, well, i think "no longer imported" would be the better term (thanx block 911), 'cause i don't think Toyota ever built them here...
enjoy 08-09-2002, 12:13 AM That's true they dicontinued importing them in the beginning of 1999, the 1998 models were sold off in early 1999 when they discontinued importing them to the United States.
