you can buy the spare if you dont like not having one. i prefer not having it- less weight and more trunk space.

 

I Have A Spare. It Came With The Car. Its A Pretty Rad Racing Style Yellow Wheel. I Took It Out Because It Was Taking Too Much Room In The Trunk. Ill Sell It If You Are Interested.

Has anybody used the fix-it flat kit yet I wonder?

 

i will avoid using fix-a-flat as the tire shops hate the crap becauase it coats ur tires and ruins your rims. Possible to ruin TPMS? I bought the spare tire from a member of Rx8club since my car did not come with one. I keep my tire in the trunk, but not mounted and I secure it with some bungee cords to keep it from slidin around.

 

You guys are all cheap. A spare tire is a standard in all cars. I have seen at least a dozen cars of all kinds on So Cal freeways with blown tires. Buy the spare, buy the hardware. Do the install yourself and save $125.00. Do not listen to the bull from those who cannot afford it or do not no how. How could you go to Vegas, though the desert, without it.

 

I guess it depends where you live. When I was in Kansas, getting a nail in the tire was like a by-weekly situation. In 2001 I drove slightly over 20,000 miles across the united states in an RV with 8 tires. I also haven't had any issues with flats in the last 9 years or so.

So call me cheap if you want, but I bet you don't know me from the spare taking up space in your trunk.

In 25 years of driving I think I've used a spare once. Blowouts are very rare, nails and slow leaks are much more common.

 

There's a definite trend away from self-reliance and sustainability when it comes to spares. On my first new car in '84 I had to special-order to get a full-sized spare. The salesperson thought I was being eccentric. My second new car was a Miata, and a full-size spare wasn't even a possibility. Now with the RX8 I had go out of my way to even get a space-saver spare, and the salesperson thought me eccentric. By the way, I ended up employing the spares on both of the previous vehicles in situations where the "pump 'n' goo" kit would not have helped. Just this week my wife discovered a wood screw in the tire of her pickup truck. While fix-a-flat would have sealed it, it sure was nice to just pop on the (full-size) spare and take the (non-ruined) wheel in for repair at our convenience.

I don't see the value of a "repair" process that ruins the tire and sensor. And I know enough about the real world to not place my trip or my safety solely in the hands of "Roadside Assistance". If I genuinely couldn't live with the trunk room and the spare I would have gotten another vehicle.

Even when i had Cars with spares , i never used them . Free road service and cell phone and 50 bucks = Clean cloths,no sweat and no exspensive ugly heavy tire in the back.
