View Full Version : I need some explination of the Old Testament
guy321 07-22-2004, 10:05 AM Just curious..
Ok, in Genesis Adam and Eve begat Cain and Abel.. then Cain went on to marry had Enoch.. Well who did he marry? If Adam and Eve were the only two created by God, then she must have been born of Eve right? So then Cain married his sister?
So why is incest so taboo among the western religions? It's in the Bible!! Eve came from Adam's rib.. shared his genetic material.. that's like cloning.. so if you do it with your clone is that incestuous?
Scientifically and cultrually I understand the presence of incest taboos. I'm just trying to sort out WTH is going on in the Bible.

whosyourbaba 07-22-2004, 10:26 AM there were others besides Adam and Eve. They were the first, but there were others. there was one line in the bible stating there was others in general. forgot where, but its somewhere.

RX8Bliss 07-22-2004, 10:44 AM the theory goes that while adam and eve dwelt in eden, there were people beyond the gates, who lived outside of paradise. they weren't blessed by god like adam and eve and were just normal people.
the more important question is this: since adam was the first man (a prototype or first year model if you will) there had to be certain inadequacies. and since Eve was created after Adam a peculiar question arises. if woman was created after man, did man have a penis before woman came along? i mean, while the penis serves as an excellent means of passing time, its primary function is for reproduction. so if there were no vaginas in the world for a time, would a penis have been necessary? during the time that there was no eve, why would god give adam a penis? did god create eve out of adam's rib and then add the penis? like:
GOD: "Adam, awaken!"
ADAM: "Yes my lord."
GOD: "I have taken from you a rib, and crafted for you this being called a Woman."
ADAM: "You are truely all powerful!" (bows down and worships)
GOD: "But first, to make her work, you will need this here adaptor." (Presents man with Penis)
ADAM: "It is a magnificent gift my lord! I will treasure it more than anything else in the world!"
GOD: "Good. Just do not play with it too much lest you go blind and hair sprungeth from thy hands."
guy321 07-22-2004, 10:45 AM "Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living."
guy321 07-22-2004, 10:48 AM At what part of this verse does blood erupt from the penis ? :D
Sorry. I HAD to.

expo1 07-22-2004, 10:49 AM Check out 31-38 http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/genesis/genesis19.htm
No mention of any repercussions, like this was “ok” back then.
guy321 07-22-2004, 10:55 AM You have very good links on the subject. But what do YOU think?
So, then why do we still have enough genetic diversity to propogate mankind? I understand that over time you species can develop genetic diversity through mutation, but in the early days, especially if they lived for 1000 years according to the bible, you would think that they would have had a very shallow gene pool in a very short time.

Feras 07-22-2004, 11:04 AM will God works in mysterious ways suffice? lol i'll just assume since they all lived 1000 years back in the day their genetic structure was superior and not suspect to mutation from incest.

This is only speculation but in theory back then the gene pool was very pure. There was very little pollution, everyone working hard and in good shape. No stories about sickness or mutations. I would also assume that GOD would also “be looking out” for problems with the inbreeding and until he was happy with the numbers of people on earth keep things from getting too messed up.
It seemed to change (incest being bad) around the time of Moses
http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/leviticus/leviticus18.htm but the reason given was to ovoid “disgrace” not for health reasons like the rules against Pork & Shellfish (the unclean foods)
Carolina8 07-22-2004, 11:56 AM ...
ADAM: "It is a magnificent gift my lord! I will treasure it more than anything else in the world!"
GOD: "Good. Just do not play with it too much lest you go blind and hair sprungeth from thy hands."
I know it's a somewhat serious question, but I can't stop laughing at this... :p
zoom44 07-22-2004, 01:16 PM well you also had the angels coming around and expanding the gene pool once in awhile. Read about the Nephilim.
wakeech 07-22-2004, 01:21 PM man, this is so weird.
don't worry about the creationists, just ask the pope: genesis never really happened that way(obviously), but that understanding goes a long way to understanding the dynamic between man and woman in middle eastern culture.
rlfletch 07-22-2004, 04:40 PM What's the first thing Adam said to Eve?
"A rib? No shit."
What's the second?
"Stand back, I don't know how big this thing is going to get."
