View Full Version : Anyone's RX-8 AT Stall?

Has anyone's RX-8 AT slowed down, stalled, then started back up in a few minutes, run very slow, then returned back to normal? This happened to me (probably because of the heat). The dealer got a few cases like this and all were AT's. They have not been able to pinpoint the problem.

This happened to me (probably because of the heat).

No problems here either. How hot are you talking ? Any other driving conditions you were aware of ?

I have this happen every once in a while. Almost got t-boned because she stalled in the middle of an intersection. Only happens when my 8 is cold, usually in the morning.

When its cold? So your problem doesnt have anything to do with the heat? The only other person i know with an 8 had the problem in the heat too, like me.

mine was not on a cold start

Were you in AT mode or shift mode?

Mine will start to stall if I down shift to 1st and it starts to pull high revs, if I don't have on the gas. Kind of like down shifting a manual. It hits the high rev, drops to about 200 rpm, then returns to normal.

I don't know if it's just the weather

Mine has only happened when my 8 is cold (first drive in the morning) and I press the gas pedal "hard." I'm not stomping on it but I'm pressing it to get the car moving from a complete stop (Stop Sign).

Were you in AT mode or shift mode?

It had nothing to do with manual shift mode. The engine quickly but gradually lost power and stopped during normal driving.

Both, believe it or not. AT mode and shift mode.

With this "issue" and my crappy gas mileage, I'm starting to think there is something programmed incorrectly with my ECU...

Scary thought. If Mazda were to follow the M$FT support model, they would discontinue support on all their crappy ECU code and force us to upgrade to the new and improved "ECU 2005" code for $199 :D Which, BTW, would run very slowly on the old ECU...

Well, last couple of days I almost stalled two times, both times I had just started my car, driving in normal mode. The car kinda lurched a little and the check engine light came on, but it was ok once it was warmed up... I don't know, I'm taking my in for a checkup this Friday.

i got my car back. They told me a few japanese mazda guys came over to check the problem out. It seems the problem is only with a few cars that were sold at my dealer, and nowhere else in the U.S. My friend's 8 got taken to death valley for testing. We are waiting for more info.

Does your idle hold still or does is run rough (fluctuate). If it fluates, you probly have a vacuum leak somewhere. Maybe a gasket is leaking or a hole in vacuum hose.

Otherwise, maybe it's a transmission ECU issue.

According to the dealer, there's nothing wrong with my car, they couldn't find any error codes, they suspect it might be a bad batch of gasoline causing the car to misfire....I don't know...

Hi! I have had the same problem.
IT happens at the same place.... and it's not when it's hot.

I start my 8, and drive down the hill.
I come to the stop sign and stop for 3 seconds.
When I begin to accelerate, the car looses power. If i continue to accelerate and not take my foot off of the accelerator the car will turn off while I am trying to cross the intersection.

I have come to my personal conclusion that:
This problem is due to the temperature of the engine. If the engine is still cold.. it will do this. Ive done the same thing when the engine is warm... and it doesnt stall.

You may want to check about the "Power Start Recall" That also helped stop the problem.

Guess what? Two days after the dealer checked my car, the check engine light came back on again.
This time, the tech is talking with someone in Mazda, preliminary diagnostic say leaked coolant in the engine, they'll have a better idea by Monday...

They took my car and gave me a ford focus. They said it would be at least ten days before i can see it again. They've got all the cars with the problem in and they are gonna do some testing. Its not gonna be long before the lemon law says theyve got to give me a new car.

Wtf :( This is disheartening to hear ... how many other people have this problem? As I am currently looking around for an AT - if this happens more than to like a - SMALL handful- of people I am going to be forced to reconsider choices in cars ... because I live in LA where the temperature regularly hits 3 digits in the summer and I cannot afford to waste time dealing with hassles. =/

I have no problems with mine
I'm in the OC and had over 20k miles on mine

wow...i wasn't aware that you could stall the AT you can stall any car. drive about 35 go wot and then slam on your brakes like you are about to hit something. that will probably stall it.

My Passat 5 speed AT has NEVER stalled, and I have been in so many near accidents that required me completely mangling the innards to get it to stop in time it's not even funny. I've left skid marks more than 30 feet long after going from 60-0 in a heartbeat, and I drove away from it without missing a beat.

The problem is only with mine and two other cars, and only in las vegas. They called and said theyd buy back my car and they will call me back. I dont think any of u considering buying an rx8 AT should worry, since its only a few cars.

I live in southern california :/

Hmmm... what did you tell the dealership is happening?

did you say "my car stalls" or what?

Thanks

Seems my idlling/stalling/power problems were solved by the "M" flash...and the shifiting in manual mode seems quicker too. (Of course the older I get, the quicker things happen.)

I just passed over the 50000 mile marker on my A/T and started stalling out consistently. Rough idle and anything under 1000 rpms and it tanks off, but only when hot. my first step is going to be replacing the spark plugs,, but they are only 1 1/2 years old. (sigh)

Pistons?
07-14-2007, 12:20 AM
OK this may sound very discourageing, I had the same problem in the heat, only when hot. When I took it in they replaced the engine, omp, engine mounts, and spark plugs. I had a little over 50,000 mile on it when this happened, and it was exactly same description as platinumzoom. It really sucked cause I had the car only 3 weeks when all this happened. Did you have any odd noises, squeaks, rattling, anything diff? That is awsome they bought it back, I wonder if they had any idea why it was doing that. Good luck man.

Another "Leaking coolant" issue.

Do you warm your engine in the morning before taking off & for how long before you start reving the engine hard & applying over 40% throttle.....??

well first off.. i had numerous amount of technical difficulties with my car..
it was 1 last step away from Lemon... *screw you Mazda!*
anyways.. i stalled for no reason, 1st stall this happened 1 month after i got my car so basically what happened was .. i was parked in front of my friend's house with my engine still running and 10 minutes into our conversation my engine decided to stall, 2nd time i was in motion my car decided to stall while in motion AND WITH TRAFFIC.. *imagine that.. seeing a brand new 8 sitting in the middle of the road with the emergency lights blinking* 3rd same as 1st 4th same as 1st . and every time i stall.. i either take it to Mazda right away or ASAP.. however.. everytime i go.. something ELSE is wrong with it.. this is why i almost gave up on my 8...

also.. you mightve been running low on gas? or your oil is running dirt *according to Mazda so dont flame me if im wrong*

thats my input
