I have a friend who absolutely hates the looks of the RX-8. When I asked him what he doesn't like about it he said "pretty much all of it, i don't like single line on it". Honestly I think the car is gorgeous and I've never heard this extreme position before. Has anyone else? I mean come-on, we're not talking about the Aztec here.

To each his own. I've found more of the people that hate the way the RX-8 looks love the G35/350Z.

While I like the looks of the G35/350Z, I also love the looks of the RX-8.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I'm not going to hold it against anybody that doesn't like my personal tastes... People always look at things from a different perspective and thus see things in a different light. There might be one bad angle on the RX-8 (and to me the only bad angle is the taillights..), but that sometimes can upset the view on the rest of the car as well.

Anyhoo, just tell your friend you're getting one... when it comes in, like the 350Z and G35 did to me... it will grow on him.

I think the beauty comes from knoledge, while I think the car is absouluty gourgous. And many of my friends agree. I think the RX-8's looks have to grow on you a bit., once one becomes informed of the car and is allowed to sit and stare at magazines [like we all have] It becomes gorgous. Plus the fact it has one of the most unique engines out there.

He will probably want one once he sees it in real life, passing him quickly.

(Only I just wish it had a larger trunk space to hold at least 4 golf bags ...)

Hercules - yes, I agree with ya there, the only thing I don't like are the tail lights. They look too ricey to me.

Bigfrogod - Yeah know... I keep staring at the pictures of the new BMW's and I still don't like them. Boy did BMW blow it!

zoom44 - What cars does he like? Well he has a 1st Gen RX-7 so he does have some taste in cars. ;)

RotorGeek - I'm with ya there...... car is sweeeeet!

Like me! hehe... I do actually think it is ugly... really damn fast looking, but still ugly.. That's what i like about the 8. It is fast (though not quite as fast as the Enzo... :D) AND smooth looking. I think the Enzo is an awesome car, but even if I had the money (which I proably never will), i don't think I'd buy one. I really just don't like the looks of it. Ferrari has made some really classy looking cars, I just don't think the Enzo is one of them.

Now THAT looks sexy!

I am not at all enamored by the exterior looks of the RX-8. The tail is fine but the profile is not nice. I would have preferred the look of four real doors or a simple two door. I also find the nose to be below average. I find the Infinit G35c exterior to be much better looking and the 350Z to be ugly.

However, the RX-8 interior is sharp and seems to be ergonomically well laid out. The G35c interior center stack is an abomination while the 350Z to be so-so.

All this said I still strongly prefer the RX-8 because it appears to be much more of a driver's car versus the competition. To hell with styling! Especially when I can't see the exterior when I am driving it.

Overall I like the RX-8 design. However, I do have some gripes:

1) The grill should be alittle higher like the 2nd concept. Right now it looks like a long nose, or a Veilside kit. The elongated front bumper design gives the RX-8 an Pikuchu like smile and dimples on the cheeks. (Headlight, fog lamps and side signal look very nice though)

2) The side fender slot should be slightly larger and more functional. I am sure the optional grill pieces on the side grill will improve the look. (Look on Mazda Japan site to find pics of these grill pieces)

3) The Tail lights are alittle too Altezza for my taste. I think it would look nicer if they just leave it dark like the S2000. Maybe dark chrome it instead. Overall the tail lamps design is much better than the Mazda 6.

4) The C-pillar is just odd. This is the one thing you can't fix with aftermarket modifications on the RX-8. The suicide door and rear headroom pay the price for the odd looking mid-rear section of the RX-8. If you draw a line bisecting the front half and rear half of the RX-8, they almost look like two different cars. The car would look so much better with a sloping fastback curve. Then again, the rear headroom is the prize for such a design. The rear suicide door window has a strange shape as well.

Overall the RX-8 is a pleasant looking car. Anyone calling fugly probably has a strange taste in automobile design. (Maybe they prefer SUV's or edgy cars like the new Cadillacs) Mazda makes very good looking cars, always has been.

:D

You made me laugh out loud (at work from my cube)

As someone who went to CCS (the Art Center's equivalent in Detroit) and lived in southern CA for a looong time you speak metaphorically true IMHO!

... I know that the final design touches were done in CA, probably by an ART Center Graduate ...

IMHO ... I only wish that mazda played more around with the rear window glass roofline and increased it to more of a 60 degree angle from it's current 45 degree to be more of a fastback style like past rx-7's.

http://www.rx8forum.com/attachment.php?postid=16263

Personally, I hope Mazda seriously thinks about doing this in a few years, making my dream come true to see a future fastback (hatchback) version (RX-3 or RX-6) with the ability to fold down the rear seats...

:)

and let's throw in some hide-away headlights too!

I heard a commentator (sorry, cannot remember who) sayng that he
"bore the designer of the Pontiac Aztek no ill will.
He tried, and in my estimation failed, but it IS
distinctive, some people love it, it sells, and at least
they gave it a tent to hide in!"
His point was that if you don't like it don't buy it, but he went on to say that there should be a special level of Hell reserved for the designers of the 2003 Camry. No style, no innovation, just pandering to the same blandness as last year, and the ten years before that.
If a Subaru Imprezza, with lots of plastic scoops and vents added, can be a sales success, I guess it just proves there is room for all types!

I kind of agree- I think they look more generic, and less like BMWs than they did before. BUT, I love the Z4- I think it's one of the most beautiful cars to come out in the past few years. Though I know a lot of people hate it!

I aggree - and so does "Automobile" magazine/April 03 issue (pg 32) Letters section ... Separated at birth? ... the 2004 Pontiac Bonnevile and the upcoming BMW 6-series coupe ...

Only time and sales will tell if "used BMW's get a boost.

Generic, yeah that's it, they've lost that signature menacing look that BMW's were famous for. The Z4, naaaa, it looks like a carp to me..... all it needs is whiskers.

- RX-8, looks better than 90% of the female population
- Aztec, looks worst than 90% of the male population
- BMW Mini, looks like crap, nothing like the original
- 350 Z, Should stay in a garage
- G35 Sedan, parked next to the 350 Z in the garage...
- G35 coupe, looks better than 89% of the female population
- Ferrari Enzo, this thing wasn't made to look good, it was made to go fast, the design was for areo, not for show.. Also, even if you had the money, you can't get one becaue they are sold to selective customers picked by Ferrari, to make sure they don't end up crashed since they're so limited. Most of these won't even hit the road...
- BMWs in general, With the exception of the M3 and M5, they are pretty similar, but I drool over their wagons!! The 7 series can hit a brick wall and still look better
- McLaren F1, Sweet
- Lambos, the way cars should look from the get go
- Porsche, if they weren't as fast as they are, they'd just be ugly (except for the GT models)
- R34, The baddest looking Japanese car IMHO, totally wicked!!
- R35 concept, Grows on you, after a few rounds of GT concepts, the car is pretty stunningly bueatiful...
- RSX, Was ugly at first, looks better riced (dunno why)
- Celica GTS, Also ugly at first, but grown on me
- Matrix, love it!!
- Pontiac Vibe, WTH? Pontiacs got problems up the ying yang like Subaru in their designs
- Subaru in general, I never liked their line of car till I actually owned one. The WRX was ugly as hell, but owning one made it grow on me... Every car they make is very questionable EXCEPT the B4 which is quiet bueatiful...
- Mercedes in general, they lost their edge from the cars of old, where if you had one it'll turn heads and everyone wanted to plant their butt in one. Now they make cars which looks either super fast, or plain ugly, The CL line looks great, the S line isn't bad but the S of old are a lot better, while the rest of the sedans can really run into trees for all I care.
- Caldilac CTS, WTH?
- Escalade SUV, Bling Bling... (Hip Hop ride of the decade)
- Range Rover, Bling Bling... (the alternative Hip Hop ride)
- Bently, The Hip Hop artist's ride
- Lotus Elise, Sweet..
- Lotus Esprit, Dated, but still sweet..
- Vanquish, AWSOME
- Mazda 6, One of the better looking sedans out
- Altima, Ranks just below the 6
- Accord, Sedan is ugly, coupe is sweet
- Camry, Anyone called for an aircraft carrier?
- Corolla, Actually an Improvement, but huge for what it is...
- Civics in general, As appealing as a bowl of rice...
- Lancer, Looks like a kid before puberty... (geek / nerd)
- Evo, The grown up version of the Lancer (Bill Gates?)
- Ford Mustangs, Should really go back to the roots...
- Crown Victoria, Only one that appeals is the black and white :-D
- Supra, Decent if not for the legacy...
- MR2, Ranks right under the NSX in the MR division
- NSX, Dated but still works IMO
- Delorean, Sweet, back to the future made it bad ass :)
- Dodge Neon SR4, They copied the WRX, WHY?
- Toyota Echo, You sacrafice everything for the saving of some gas...
- Preludes, They're pretty sexy..
- Integras, Too many to like, they're like as bueatiful as ants...
- Lexus GS400, yeah, this was a bad mamma jamma
- IS 300, looked good at first, then took on the dark side of the force...
- Hummer, Millitary issue versions are bad ass, civillian versions are stupid, and the new one is like an ugly baby...

well, I had fun making this list as cars kept popping into my head hehe, maybe I forgot some very controversial cars, but hell, theres enough in there for a good read...
