View Full Version : Questions from a beginner
Big_ton 06-23-2004, 11:21 PM Hi everyone,
New to this country and also this forum. I am from Hong Kong and now in Minneapolis. Just got a 04 WRX and confused with many things. Hope you guys can help me out.
--- I personally like the style of the 8 but living in the midwest i heard AWD is better for snow. What are the differences bwtweern an AWD, FWD and RWD? what would you guys perfer?
---- The suby is the first stick car I ever had and I am driving like shit I guess. I wanna more about driving. What is 'double clutch'? Is the purpose of it matching the rev when downsifting? Can we do it just stepping on the clutch and step up the rec then downshift?
---- A month ago when I lanuch with 3k rev I smelled sth burned, i think is the clutch. Sas to death. Is it a big problem? How can we lanuch better and faster?
---- Stupid question......:D what do you choose bwtweem the 8, 350Z, EVO and STi. That's very difficult to choose from.
Thanks for replies and sorry for long post.

AWD = All Wheel Drive
RWD = Rear Wheel Drive
FWD = Front Wheel Drive
2)Learn to drive a stick normally before you begine double clutching enything.
3)Yes it probably was the clutch, learn to drive a stick and this won't happen and you will perform better.
4)None of the above, I own an FD and my Lotus is on the way.
HiTMaNN 06-23-2004, 11:31 PM well jason not everyone has 43k laying around for a lotus :D

D MENAC 7 06-23-2004, 11:37 PM Welcome back Jason. Don't forget to read this post: http://www.rx8club.com/misc.php?s=&...=faq&page=4
We clarified things a bit so that everyone can have a great day. :D
1)
AWD - great in the snow
FWD - good in the snow
RWD - NEED snow tires
2)
try downshifting without rev matching and you'll see how jerky it is...now try downshifting and with the clutch in give it some gas to 'rev match' then put it into gear...a lot smoother...you can even try downshifting and not letting off the gas at all, the smoothness of your shift depends solely on how smoothly you play the clutch
3)
with an 8 it's going to happen because of the low torque...to get a good launch you'll have to rev it up and with that comes wear and tear...no matter what if you're going for best times you're gonig to wear something out whether it be your tires, tranny, clutch etc. or all the above...
4)
depends on what you're in the market for...it's all subjective right there
Gigolo Jason 06-23-2004, 11:40 PM Thanks D,
I have read it, to my knowledge, the only violation that I have made was the conflict over my first avatar.
Buy the way, I would love to read the thread on that in the Moderator forum.
Loaded8 06-23-2004, 11:48 PM AWD and FWD are not much better in the snow then RWD if you don't have the proper tires. The EVO (like WRX-STI) has a warning sticker that you MUST change the tires if you plan on driving in the snow....apparently the high performance type tires they put on it aren't good in the snow even with the AWD... but with all weather tires on each car I agree, AWD = best, FWD= second best, RWD= worst for snow. I'm not familiar with actual "snow" tires and if they would be enough on the 8 or if you would also need to add snow cables.
snow tires helped TREMENDOUSLY...lets put it this way...
summer performance tires = undriveable...i'm talking not even being able to get out of your own driveway
snow tires = drivng any other FWD sedan in the snow with all purpose tires...
if Mitsu places a warning sticker on their cars for driving in the snow, i think it calls for a lawsuit that Mazda doesn't do the same...i mean the 8 SUCKS in the snow with the stock tires, worst car i've ever driven

Don't worry, it was so uneventful I cannot even remember that event.
D MENAC 7 06-24-2004, 12:17 AM Oh that one the one with the avatar with the state of Texas on the arse cheek of that chick. I had to dig deep to find that thread. Believe me you, if you were to know the fun we had discussing what was going on, you would probably run out of here embarrassed and never show your avatar again. LOL I kind of forgot that you were even around.
Gigolo Jason 06-24-2004, 12:20 AM Thats why I had it as my avatar, to start controversy. You should see the one that I have now on the other forum.
Big_ton 06-24-2004, 12:22 AM Besides driving in snow, is RWD the best to drive?

It all depends, they all have there advantages and their disadvantages. My advice to you is to drive all three and see which one you like best. Thats the only way to find what fits you best.
<(hijacks thread)>
So, how many of you like my new avatar? How many of you take offence to it?
I figure that since it is an election year that I should bring up something more spirited to the events and circumstances in an election year.
D, PM me the other thread if you can, I would love to read it.
