View Full Version : Have you ever given a thumbs-up to a fellow RX-8 owner on the road?

I was just wondering if anyone has given a thumbs up to someone you see on the road with an RX-8? The 8 is a beautiful car and we all know that...why not congratulate someone else for having a chance to own one?..

Yep! A guy in his 40's with his wife about 2 lanes away from me yelled out "hey nice car!", I yelled back complimenting him on his nice black 8. Then when I was on my way home a cute asian girl that drove the same color 8 as me drove up and said hey nice car. I looked over and was like wow this girl is fine lol. But anyways I give thumbs up to fellow RX8 drivers or anyone driving a nice car.

I HATE giving thumbs up. I think it's dumb. I don't like getting them even more because I hate feeling obligated to give them!

I'd prefer a simple wave. or a short honk.

I just had a guy in a blue RX-8 pull up beside me at a light yesterday. Gave him a big thumbs up. It's just the polite thing to do. :D

I tried flashing once, but I couldn't move because my seatbelt was too tight.

Take your foot off the brake to release the tension in the belt.

I'd like to, but in 1,000+ miles I have yet to see another (moving) RX-8 :(

when ever i see an rx8, i wave or something of the like, even though i dont own an 8. strangly enough, even though ive waved to about 5 or 6 different 8's, the drivers have only responded to me once. i dont own an 8, so maybe thats the reason.

I always give the thumbs up to rotary owners.
Even if some look at me like i got a third eye.
Why?

Yes, I try to signal to all the other rotary owners I pass by.

Wow folks, I have a hard time believing that not every RX8 owner loves their car as much as I. I make it a point to acknowledge every 8 I see. If I see one going the opposite way, I'll flash my brights. If I see one in a parking lot I'll leave a business card with RX8club.com written on it. I've been known to pull in behind somebody that's parking an 8 and congratulating them.

I started looking at the RX-8 in September of last year... I bought in November. Since then, I've seen just four moving 8s. Last week, while walking down the street, an 8 pulled out from a parking garage with its window down. I said, in a very loud voice, "Wow! That's an amazing-looking car! God, is that a rotary?" The driver had a BIG smile. Very funny.

LOL, seriously...

All the more odd, as these parts tend to be overrun by the newly rich and trendy (no, not me - I'm just a poor native). I passed by a Viper last week, saw a couple Ferraris the week before, an Evo or two go by locally, an Sti is down the road... just got back from the local ice cream stand (which is simply a front for the same rich and trendy to park and show off their rides) packed with Porsches, BMWs, even a nicely done 56-57 Chevy...

And still no 8s.

Of course, now that I SAID that, lol... I'm sure I'll see 10 tomorrow :)

I always wave or flip the lights at any rotary I see. Today I waved at two 8's while driving my FD. Got no response, but I gotta try.

I am on temporary duty in Hawaii, and I was very happy to drive up beside a guy in an alpine green RX-8. He probably thought I was kind of weird telling him how nice his car was and giving him the "hang loose" since I wasn't in my own 8 (its back in TX), but oh well. As has been said before, you gotta spread the love.

MANDITORY!! you must acknowledge fellow rx8'ers.. I see a red one on sandy lake road every other morning or so on the way to work in dallas... give him a quick light flash, or wave every time i pass him on the way in. he does the same

I hate seeing one when I'm driving a different car. I always try to look at who's driving the car and it would be much "less-creepy" if I was in my own 8. Of course I almost never see one when I'm driving the 8 (I think I've seen 4 total in 2200+ miles).

I get thumbs up from Mustangs, Celicas, Eclipses, etc all the time

But, my favorite is when I pull up next to a Z, G35, or Crossfire and see them checking out my 8 :) Don't usually get much acknowledgment from them though.

Yes I do, I just ask that I get thumbs up when I drive my 83 rx-7 as well.

When I first bought my car I had only ever seen two RX-8s on the road. Now I see 'em everywhere. I've honked, waved, flashed, or thumbed at every one of them.

Number of times I got a response: 1.

I usually only have time for the ultra cool 'head toss' (actually ultra dorky, but it's all the game I got).

Ive seen maybe 5 other 8's, 2 of them blue (like mine).

Best response I got was the look of absolute shock on a young girl when our 8's passed... jaw hanging down and could tell she was saying "just like mine".

Make sure to give a wave/flash/honk/high sign to your fellow RX-7 owners. The RX-7 is the whole reason the '8 is on the road today!

For now I wave to fellow Miata and Rx7 owners, but once we get the 8, you can expect I'll be waving to them as well. ^.~ It might be one of you that I'll be waving to so I expect to see a big enthusiastic wave back. :D

And all along, I've been giving folks the finger! It seems to get more of a reaction. They seem to appreciate tailgating and passing as well. Sometimes I like to mix it up...

1. Start tailgating
2. Beep the horn/flash headlights, xenon high beams rock!
3. Pull along side for the pass
4. Show them the bird, it helps if you look at them and laugh.
5. Spice it up by talking on the cell phone while doing this!
6. Dart in front of them and cut it close
7. Tap the brakes just enough to show the lights

You too will be making friends in no time at all!

This was the best for me ...I had a guy in a silver Z350 come up along side of me and give me a thumbs up! I'm not sure but it almost seemed like he was doing the old "boy I wish I would've waited"..........Of course I waved back but didn't try to tangle with him as we know what the result would have been. At any rate, it was nice.....

I try to give a thumbs up or some kind of acknowledgement, but sometimes it's either too late or I was too busy changing gears or turning or something. I've seen a tit-grey one in RB a couple of times and on the 15 as well with a lass behind the wheel but have yet to get any kind of acknowledgement back.. oh well!

I gave a thumbs up to a Nordic Green on today. I was going to work with my brother in his '96 civic (no rice, just his everyday car). Keep in mind, I don't own an RX-8 either, but I am a huge fan. I didn't get a response. He just looked at me like I was some dumb kid.

MyRxBad
06-18-2004, 09:50 AM
I do the head nod as well.
But it seems that when I'm in my "8" there are none around and when I'm in the "beater/work" car, I see them all the time.

I alway show love to all the "rotorheads"

I wave or flash the lights (I see them all the time around Houston), but they almost always just ignore me.

With the yellow, it CAN'T be the car. Maybe it's me.....................

Not many opportunities since I've only seen 2 rx-8's on the road since I bought mine, but yes, this is such a cool car the people who drive one deserve acknowledgement for their excellent taste... especially those with blue ones. :D

WELL FOLKS. Enjoy it while it lasts. I am starting to see at least three every day to and from work, so the waving is already starting to get old for me. Could you imagine if every 3g eclipse driver waved when he saw car like his. it would start either a traffic jam or car accident. That WILL be the rx8, if it stays in production for several years. So I'd say enjoy it now, because it will get old before too long.

Well,
I don't know about the rest of America (or the world for that matter), but here in the Fort Campbell KY area we do what affenage does and just give a quick blip of the high beams.

naaa not any more, I'm tired of the socal snobs never reciprocating my cheers.

When I did, I would say 1 of every ten thumbs up gets one back, the rest just look and speed up or ignore me.

what's wrong with having the same car? jeez louise :^\

Since so many RX-8s are on the road here in So Cal, I've decided to only give the thumbs up to Mazda 3s since they are the retarded little cousin of the RX-8. Kinda looks like the 8, but without all the good stuff.

So go out there and show your love!

no, but i will give a friendly wave. i do get alot of thumbs up from other non-8 vehicles 'tho. almost on a daily basis. lie the idiot the other day on the freeway, passengr hanging out the window, two arms out, thumbs up. i always have a smile on my face in my 8.

Tonight was a first... a guy in a passenger seat with a video camera took a minute or so of tape of my car as we drove down the highway next to one another. I'm gonna be sorry to see the 8 get popular - I'm really enjoying the novelty.

I havent really been close enough to an 8 to wave or give a thumbs up. But, about five days after i got my car I pased an FD and gave him a wave. He smiled and waved back. I forgot how much I love tht body style. I might have to go buy one now.
