View Full Version : Scion TC coupe. (Toyota Celica Replacement)
JeupRX-8 06-14-2004, 11:30 PM Just wondering everyone's thoughts on this car. It seems like it will be built right (toyota), and it reminds me of a G35 coupe. My girlfriend is looking into it as a replacement to her piece of crap Chevy Cavalier. It is either this or a used RSX. I especially like this becuase they copied the BMW 7er lights in the front (my dads car).

Spazm 06-15-2004, 12:43 AM Never got into this whole Scion thing...
Kel Rx8 06-15-2004, 01:05 AM i need a second car
like the 3 or thsi new scion
i think the rear quater panel looks like a gt35 coupe.
i like this little car 2 thumbs up cheap ass hell.
Xyntax 06-15-2004, 02:43 AM The Mazda 3 and Scion tC have almost the same specs right? The tC does have an FI w/warranty option though. Mazdaspeed 3 perhaps in the near future?
DreRX8 06-15-2004, 08:22 AM I like the tC--I'm anxious to see the track numbers on one (0-60, 1/4) especially on the 200HP Supercharged variant. It looks a whole lot better than the Celica. Me personally I like the styling more than the RSX.
th1rd3y3 06-15-2004, 09:51 AM I think it will be a sweet little car and HANDS DOWN you can't beat Toyota reliability.
ALMOST8IT 06-15-2004, 09:54 AM Looks good, likely to be reliable, and cheap. I'd go with the new Scion over a used RSX. The RSX may be more fun, but you have no idea how the last owner drove the car.
Elara 06-15-2004, 11:18 AM It's interesting, but Scion's having so many complaints on build quality that I wouldn't consider Scion in the next year or so, till they get it sorted out.
Lawerence 06-15-2004, 07:34 PM Is she talking about the base TC or the supercharged one?
Youd have to drive them both, but honestly the only flavor of rsx to get is type-s....its a world of difference.

word
Shocka 06-16-2004, 05:10 PM i drove the xA really liked it def would say its comparable to the 3, not powerwise but i did like it as a daily drive possibility.
i will be going to Toyota this weekend to check out the xB and tC as replacements for my Civic.

I hope that it's not going to replace the Celica I'm one of those that like it a lot ... very sleek and edgey ... even over the RSX (which I almost bought last year because I couldn't find the celica with the options I wanted/side airbags and ABS that come standard on the RSX, but got a better deal on the mp5 instead, which helped me save some $ fo get the RX-8 in a couple more years) ...
Personally I'd go with a used RSX. I'm not fond of the tC's looks. The back may look a little like a G35 coupe, but it overall reminds me of a very blunt RSX not very sporty looking at all IMHO!
Back in June 7th Autoweek took a look at the tC and they seemed to like how it handeled (another reason I got the mp5 was I liked the feel behind the wheel much better then when I was driving the RSX on my test rides) ...
So my advice would be drive both cars, even look at a used Mazda Protegι5 (which actually has slightly better safety ratings than the Mazda3, although the 3 is such a nicer car that the mp5 ... but you should be able to get a better deal on the mp5) and make your decision after that!
I hate to say that your right that any of these cars are a big improvement over a Chevy Cavalier! Good Luck and let us know what happens!
On a side note: If you really want to know more of what I truly think about the tC find this week's AutoWeek magazine - June 21, 2004 (can't find it at a store, try your local library) and turn to page 19 of the letters section and look for "Try again"
;)
RX8Freak 06-19-2004, 03:05 PM I think all of Scions cars suck. As a teen I personally find nothing "cool" about their cars. Not only are they FUGLY, they have no hp. The tC is probably the ugliest coupe I've ever seen. Toyota you can do alot better!
Lawerence 06-19-2004, 05:02 PM Actually bwayout,
In this weeks copy of autoweek they drove a TC and spoke very well of it.
They said the interior materials and quality was about on par with VWs GTI, and it was fun to drive and seemingly well built.
I would probably go for a base TC (160hp) over a base RSX.
It would be tough to decide between an RSX-S and a Supercharged TC, because the TC does have many many options (im sure you can make it a 23K car +).
I havent driven the TC personally, but with the options it has and if the supercharged engine is any good it might be a better choice than an RSX-S...maybe :)
chinx 06-19-2004, 10:16 PM pretty sure tc is NOT a celica replacement. while it's cool that it has a supercharger option, i doubt it'll be as much fun and as good in handling as celica or rsx

Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mazda... They all have a bunch of "ugly" little cars running in the streets of Japan. See if you can identify any one of them in the photo below...
It's a different market for different people.
rx-7~rx-8 06-20-2004, 09:56 PM RSX... RSX is a notch up... Tc is New... RSX is old... Acura will update it soon.. i saw a celica drawing in Road and Track the street adition or something... it had pics of new Celica 230HP with AWD.. no SHYT... i saw it... then the RSX with updated headlights and body minor but looks so sweet... with a powerful engine most likely 240HP from s2000 it is $23 you know... and how dodge is selling its SRT-4 i bet toyota and acura will make more powerful beast to keep the teenage scene alive...

(Another) One For The Kids: Toyota's Youth Division Adds A Third Model
By WES RAYNAL
Our favorite version of the tC has the cold-air intake package and sport exhaust. That car is plenty fast enough, the exhaust note just that little bit nastier (in a good way).
And your are right I had to re-read the artical, they were happy with the "looks" of the tC ...
It's a good-looking little coupe, this tC-sort of RSX-like. No, it doesn't stand out on the road like the xB, but for some buyers that will be a good thing. Interior materials, including the plastics, look first-rate, especially at this sticker price.
But what got me frustrated with the Scion tC was this part of the story...
Scion boss Jim Farley says the tC, a coupe, is a must in rounding out the Scion lineup. For starters, he says, Scion's research uncovered the coupe as the most popular body style. "Young trendsetters want sleek cars that offer utility," Farley explains. "Even as Scion continues to be a work in progress, we knew we could develop a new car with sedan interior packaging and hatchback versatility to attract both sedan and coupe buyers."
I just can't see how anyone could call this car "sleek" it's got a blunt front end. Not sleek at all! (The celica is sleek, so is the RSX, Z & G35 coupe and of course the RX-8) Personally, I wish the tC looked more like the Scion ccX concept car's front end, including seats too but
still keeping it a hatchback/fastback!
bwayout 06-21-2004, 09:15 PM Here's what the Scion ccX looked like.

Toyota Gets Young and Fresh
By Warren Clarke
Scion's new crossover was designed in Japan, but its silver-hued, Euro-styled sheetmetal seems more reflective of the fact that it was built in Italy. Projector-like headlights guide the way in front and are accompanied by LED-type illuminated turn signals located just below. The car's tall, sloping roofline gives it a profile that's more Citroen than Toyota (and this is a good thing). Rounded front and rear contours make for an aggressive, sporty countenance.

Ulp....sorry....just looked at those pictures and threw up in my mouth a little. :( Most of those cars look like VW Beetles and vans, only with downs syndrome...I wonder if they come in "short bus yellow". I wholeheartedly support people's decision to purchase them though; they make my 8 look even better in comparison! ;)
drupnoy1 06-22-2004, 12:15 AM My little sister is planning on getting the new TC. We went to the dealers today to test drive it and she loved it. The styling is a definite plus and the interior is awesome (especially that double sunroof thingy). I didn't drive it because its for my sister, but she did say it was pretty fast in her opinion. Overall, I think the car is great and I would definitely get one if I didn't already have my baby!
KC_Prelude 06-22-2004, 04:36 PM Got a chance to see and ride in the new scion at an event they held in my town. The car is very well built and it offers a lot of standard features and quality for the money. It is between a corolla and camry in size and has room for 5. The moonroof is great and the back seats (3) recline at a 45 degree angle which is so nice. You can literally lay back in the back seat and look up through the fixed moonroof, its roomy enough to sleep back there. With the seats folded down it becomes a 2 seater wagon. The stereo is very nice and isnt too cluttered and can be hidden with a cool flip down cover. Nice thick leather wrapped steering wheel and good driving position. I would go for the supercharged one for sure ,the rep said it would be $20,000. They gave us a bunch of free stuff (hats, tattoos, brochures, $15.00 gift certificate) just for looking at the car which was just great. Overall I think toyota has a killer value on their hands. Where else can you find a $16,000 car with a full moon roof like that?
Lawerence 06-22-2004, 05:01 PM They were giving people tatoos? ;)
jk
But I agree the car is definitely a good value and the build quality should be excellent. And ya, the sunroof is freaking HUGE!
RX8Freak 06-23-2004, 10:42 PM Ok I've really warmed up to Scion recently, i though the tC was gonna be slow and all but I saw the pics and the interior looked awesome. And a turbo 200hp? For 20 grand? Cant beat it, it'll be my second choice for a car if I dont like the 8 for some reason.
Mikelikes2drive 06-24-2004, 04:33 AM yeah the tc is a nice car... test drove it and for its value its a really nice car. would get it over a rsx any day but thats just my opinion. my gf is thinking about getting it and i dont mind. just because xa and xb are really ugly doesnt mean that the tc is ugly as well. the build on the xa and xb are really nice imo. you cant judge until uve actually sat in it and drove it for yourself. (thats a fun hobby... going around driving alot of cars for the heck of it)

wtf? rsx is not a notch up in my opinion. a notch up is a s2k or an rx8 ^_^ and HONDA wont be updating the rsx anytime soon or at least the look of it. they didnt make any drastic changes to the integra for like 10 yrs. and they wont do it again. i mean the type R just came out like last year. the new integra is only like 3 years old. plus... i would think they would change the s2k first... and that wont be for a long time probably
KC_Prelude 06-24-2004, 01:14 PM The Tc is the perfect girlfriend/wife car. Its inexpensive, reliable, and very comfortable to ride in (a plus for me) and is still fun to drive when you get the chance. This is definately a prospect on my girlfriends new car list along with the new legacy turbo. 200hp supercharged in a fwd car is plenty fast for getting the groceries. Fast cars are great but the sobering reality of owning one is that unless you are a fan of speeding tickets you will not be able to unleash the true potential of your car in most city driving situations. I like cars that I can floor at every stoplight and drive near their limits without killing myself.

There going to be one in Dallas in a couple of weeks, I plan to be there an go for a test drive to see how it feels behind the wheel!
;)
I still think the tC's exterior design could of/should of been more aerodynamic/sleek and sportier (even the Hyundai Tiburon has a sleeker and sportier "look") I guess I'll see if I change my feelings after I see it in person and drive one.
But from what I've seen on their web site and in magazine pictures, I'll give points to the tC's center console. It's looks almost as nice as the new Volvo S40.
:D
shelleys_man_06 06-26-2004, 10:21 AM I read the specs on the Scion tC. Nice car, especially for the price. Is it a performance car? Can be. It's got the suspension to move and shake. Will it waste my RX-8? Nah. But, kudos to Toyota for being successful at marketing their autos under the guise of a synonym for the word 'offspring.'
flatso 06-27-2004, 09:32 PM So the TC in the flesh today and for 17K that car is going to be flying out the door. I bet they will be charging over list because they could easily get another 2-3 grand for it. Awesome little car
Sinic 07-01-2004, 08:35 PM coming from australia i haven't seen the scion's or those other little ugly cars...
do people buy them? some of todays cars are beginning to look too outrageous in an off-putting way
anybody agree?
lefuton 07-01-2004, 08:56 PM i really like the looks of the tc, imvho it's what the impreza should have looked like =) if you could the sti motor in there, i'd be all over that. it's fwd though right? hmm tempting, but i think i'd opt for a mazda3 5-door
