View Full Version : How long does it take you to get to work?
flatso 06-13-2004, 07:49 AM To me if I had to drive over an hour to work I would be looking for another job. Yet I know a few people who commute up to two hours a day one way and anyone who lives in NJ knows that half the battle is traffic never mind the driving. Four hours of your life wasted in traffic does not appeal to me. How long does it take you to get to work and what would be your limit to how far you would travel?
mysql101 06-13-2004, 07:52 AM When I lived in NJ, I had about a 50-60 min drive from Tewksbury to East Brunswick.
Right now I live 1.1 miles from the office... so I don't head out until about 5 mins before I need to be there.

I drove on Rt 18 in East Brunswick yesterday and man that road is sooooo congested. I would guess you don't miss that commute.
Optitron 06-13-2004, 08:14 AM I drive an hour to work. I just got married a few months ago and moved in with her since she had a 3 bedroom townhouse and I had a 2 bedroom mobile home (bachelor pad). Hopefully we can get a house closer soon. I don't mind the drive much, since I have a normal work day. I had a job a few years ago that I drove an hour there and back from, and I had to work 12-15 hour days plus the drive.

how is the traffic in NC and job situation? I am seriously thinking of moving down there. I can not stand the traffic in NJ.

Well, it depends on which part you live in. I live closer to the coast. I drive down a highway through farms with a 55MPH speedlimit between two cities. I've been to Raliegh and the traffic up there is horrible. I'm in the Marines so I don't know the job situation.

Yeah.. it was a strange trip, I'd start out with no traffic, hit a spot with a ton of it, then it'd clear up, then as I approached work, hit traffic again. Kinda like going through two cities.
I was living in St. Petersburg and got a new job in North Tampa. Even though it was only 20ish miles away, it was taking 40-60 mins due to the traffic in Tampa. So I moved, and now I'm right next to the office.
Anything over 30 mins and it starts to wear thin.... unless you can find a way to get paid for the commute :)
TODreamer 06-13-2004, 10:15 AM 1.5 hrs on the bus..... I quit driving to work. Too damn expensive
Rotary Nut 06-13-2004, 10:26 AM 15 minutes on a good day (lite traffic). That will be cut to about 7-10 minutes when they open the new entrance to Ft. Eustis. Can't wait.
rev-2-9k 06-13-2004, 10:32 AM 2 minutes with no traffic 7 minutes in heavy traffic. I could walk it in 12.
14 minutes to go 18 miles.
i wake up.. and i am ther :P
most days...
Depends where the job site is. Usually 20-30 minutes.
Morgan 06-13-2004, 11:51 AM it takes me like 5 min on a good day with no speed traps and if i catch all the green lights..other days its about 10ish...not too bad.
fxdsconv2000 06-13-2004, 11:55 AM 15-20 min now. It used to be 1-1.5 hours (I lived 74 miles away from my office)
Morgan 06-13-2004, 12:14 PM I couldn't imagain driving far for work..i use to have to drive 15 min unless it was for a 5 o'clock shift..then it would take from 30-45 min (i hate gainesville) but that was when i worked in the mall
RotorGeek 06-13-2004, 12:25 PM 25min if there is light traffic, but that is very rare in south florida. On a normal day it will take me 45min. I work 19miles from home
30-40min one way... through LA traffic mind you. Traffic never bothered me until I moved down here... :\
I particularly love it when a car doesn't let you in coming off the on ramp onto the freeway. It's fun having to drive off the freeway because that person just had to get ahead of you first. -.-;;
allstate 06-13-2004, 01:54 PM 40 min drive here. I enjoy it actually. Especially in the 8. In the morning it helps me wake up a little bit and in the afternoon it helps me wind down.
Kaliken 06-13-2004, 03:02 PM well in LA.. .
if I leave at 6:30AM it will take me 45 minutes
if I leave at 6:45AM it will take me a little over an hour.. traffic changes that quickly out here Seriously
On the way home anytime after 4:30 it will take me about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.
I am going to be moving closer once I have a bit more money saved up.. I am shooting for a nice 20 minute drive..
Either way driving the 8 is fun.. But I do hate people who wait til the last minute to merge in.. its like they have to get ahead of everyone.. so it works bothways.
MadRonin 06-13-2004, 03:45 PM I live 35 miles from work. In normal traffic that would take me about 40 minutes.
In typical rush hour traffic (which is every day) it takes me about an hour and a half to two hours. :(
AcesAreWld 06-13-2004, 04:21 PM right now I still have my apartment in Glassboro (Rowan U. Grad) and the drive to work is 20 is mins (Blackwood). Starting July 1st, I move home to save $ (for the RX8, for a place, etc) and I live in Wall. That means drive west across 195 across the entire state of NJ, then south down 295 or turnpike (exit 3 off turnpike) to Blackwood. I have a 1998 Toyota Avalon XLS right now, do I really want to buy an 8? Do I want to save for a condo 1st? is 70 miles each way too far? you're only 23 years old once...

mamccubbin 06-13-2004, 07:44 PM Between 7 and 10 minutes. Somedays I make it longer just to enjoy the car more.
D MENAC 7 06-13-2004, 08:13 PM 13 minutes when traffic and the lights are with me, 18 when they are against me and 20 if I am on time leaving for work which is a rare occasion.
Sea Ray 06-13-2004, 08:16 PM 6 minutes unless I get behind a school bus, then 8 tops.
Elara 06-13-2004, 09:53 PM Was 5 minutes, but after we bought the house, it's become 30-45, depending on when we get up. Sometimes more than an hour, if there's accidents.
jtimbck2 06-14-2004, 11:49 AM 10 minutes now, it will be about 20-25 minutes after we move (later this week).
Meowloud 06-14-2004, 11:57 AM Elara, I hope you got a view as good as jtimbck2's veiw! WOW :D
It better be a darn nice view if I'm doubling my travel time! :(
My travel time is 3 mins. on a good day and 6 - 7 mins. on a 'redlight' day.
HeelnToe 06-14-2004, 12:08 PM 30 minutes to get to work (22 miles), 45+ to get home (>22 miles).
The route TO work is the most efficient...
The route home is the most FUN :)
It's funny, on my route home (empty country roads), I rarely see Accords, Camry, etc. It's always WRXs, S2000s, and last friday, a Viper... going the other way. Seems we all have the same idea, lol...
20 minutes...and that includes the country roads and I-85...
blue flash 06-14-2004, 12:49 PM 10 min driving normal if alot of red light 15-20 min,but i had to get home in a hurry one day 5min hall-n as/
Blue_Chameleon 06-14-2004, 01:47 PM On a non-traffic day, it takes me an hour and 15 minutes...on a traffic day, it takes me an hour and 45 minutes...
It depends if i'm going to or from work and on what day....I use the time to relax and just have "time to myself" before I go home or work. It sucks sometimes when you're really tired, but I gotta do what I gotta do to make a buck.
Total drive distance roundtrip: 171 miles per day
93rdcurrent 06-14-2004, 01:47 PM 20-25 min. usely.

Don't I wish! But, as a first time home buyer, beggars can't be choosers :) Next house will have a view worth of jtimbck's!

My office is 14 miles from my house, all highway. Of course, I am court 3-5 times a week, which means a hour or more trip.
kwolfman 06-14-2004, 03:07 PM 30-45 minutes of bumper-to-bumper crappy DC driving from Silver Spring to Bethesda. Sometimes I'm able to take an alternate route (some back roads) that is much less conjested, but longer.
I got my 8 last July, while I was in between jobs. With my previous job I had a 15 minute commute, all high speed. Now I'm in traffic. I'm slowly getting used to commute.
neit_jnf 06-14-2004, 03:43 PM I live 4.5 miles from work, about 10 to 15 minutes (30mph limit) depending on traffic lights and trains...
Paradox 06-14-2004, 03:52 PM 5 min., no matter what.
